Hey all, I'm new to the forum so I wanted to say hello!

I am very excited about 2.0 especially after all of the changes made XIV 1.xx that made it so much more enjoyable. It seems clear however that the overall mechanics much more closely resemble that of a western MMO as far as the control scheme is concerned. While that is going to impress non FFXIV fans I always personally really enjoyed the use of a controller for FFXI and FFXIV. It , to me, played very much like an offline game in everything from the character movement to camera controls (such games as ocarina of time, mass effect, offline final fantasy games, etc). I don't see it being possible to do both the western MMO control scheme and the current FFXIV control scheme.

Are we going to be losing controller support? I read somewhere that switching between controller and mouse-based play would change the entire UI (and possibly the control scheme?) however this may have only been relating to PC vs PS3. Does anyone have any solid idea if it will still support use of a gamepad?

No, but the controller format is changing to something called... something.. I forget the name but its something weird like XrossBar.

There wasn't much news on it, but it will be the same interface that the PS3 players get, which is designed to be similar to a single player FF experience, so no worries.

I believe the PC and the PS3 will have completely separate interfaces. The PC will focus on keyboard and mouse and the PS3 on controller. That said, I thought I read something about controller support on the PC somewhere. I'll try to find it again.

EDIT: found it in another translated post http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/22261-Translations-%28French-English%29?p=535931&highlight=controller#post535931

The PS3 thing is called "Cross Hot Bar" but we don't really know what that is yet... http://andriasang.com/con1s9/ffxiv_ps3_new_interface/

The "Cross hot bar " makes me think of the "Cross Media Bar" that the Playstation 3 uses as it's main UI system control. Maybe a variation on that. I don't mind using a keyboard and mouse for most MMO's , but for some reason I can't stand them in either FFXI or FFXIV. Nothing like being able to kick back on the couch with a controller and not get pains in my hands and wrists after a few hours of playing.

Amen, I am currently playing XIV on my 55" LCD with surround sound. Being able to chill on the couch with my x360 controller makes it a great experience. I don't want to confine myself to keyboard and mouse. Although I did that with Mass Effect (keyboard on lap, mouse on couch) and it worked quite well, it's not optimal. I think it will be impressive if Square-Enix can really pull off a single version (pc) being able to use controller and mouse/keyboard EFFECTIVELY because ultimately they require two entirely different methods of interfacing with the game. I'm excited to see what is in store.

Edit: ...and the reason you can't stand a keyboard/mouse in FFXI/XIV is because those games are not designed with the western mmo control scheme in mind. They are set up like any other 3rd person action game on the planet (including all offline FF games) and because of that a controller is the best way to play. You wouldn't play gears of war, prince of persia, arkham asylum, etc with a keyboard/mouse would you? So I can't understand why the word "MMO" makes developers use that terrible control scheme found in WoW, Lotro, SWTOR, etc. I just really hope that XIV 2.0 allows us to have the option to switch between western/eastern (or offline game) control schemes by selecting controller or keyboard/mouse.
