I am an old FFXI player (~8 years from release of RotZ to beyond Abyssea). I bought FFXIV at release and stopped playing shortly after due to the initial flaws and the fact that my social base and friends were still in FFXI.

I have since left FFXI, albeit reluctantly and with fond memories, and have been tracking the progress of FFXIV: ARR with great interest. However, I am finding it quite difficult to locate some information and was hoping that someone here might help me, or at least point me in the right direction. It is difficult to separate old 1.0 info from new 2.0 at times.

1) I still have my original copy of FFXIV, and a record of it on my Square Enix account. Will I have to buy a new copy when 2.0 goes live, or can I simply reactivate my Square Enix account and be good to go? Will the keycode from my FFXIV box still function with 2.0?

2) It is my understanding that the story has changed from 1.0 to 2.0, with a general move from one time period to another. How much of the background info from my original 1.0 game manual still applies? Is there a place where I can find information about original FFXIV and how it corresponds with ARR? For example, I noticed that the three original nations are no longer referred to by the names in the game manual.

3) It is my understanding that I should ignore any/all system requirement info, along with any benchmark programs, until the new 2.0 info is released sometime mid-late November. Am I correct in this?

4) Similar to #3, should I ignore any/all game guides for classes and mechanics unless I read it on the Official FFXIV: ARR home page? I have had difficulty separating old info from the new.

I appreciate those who take time to respond to my thread. I have found some information here and there, but I am not sure how much of it I should ignore. I also don't assume these questions haven't been answered, I only assume my inability to find the answers on my own...

1. You do not need to purchase the game again.
2. The story isn't changing so much as it is evolving. So the old backstory stuff still applies. The empire is currently moving on Eorzea and a big battle is culminating in Mor Dhona. One of the moons Dalamud has appeared closer and closer in the sky over the past months. It is rumored that this is the empires doing, and it will soon crash into Eorzea (Meteor), detroying the world as we know it, and setting the stage for A Realm Reborn.
3. You can look at the alpha specs to get an idea of the requirements. I think they have said though that the alpha requirements are inflated a little more than what the final specs will be.
4. It's probably best to wait for more info to come out on 2.0 before deciding on classes etc.

1. As the above poster mentioned, you will not have to purchase the game again. A while back, yoshi-p has stated that they will make the new game available for download in some fashion. It has also been stated that our old game keys and buddy passes/collector's edition codes will still be acceptable in ARR.

2. Yes they story has changed greatly. Basically, it went from a lack there of at launch, to a long quest line that involves grand companies being raised back from the text books of old and the empire doing some stuff that causes mischief. If you want a quick and dirty synopsis, you can read the above poster's spoiler link.

3. Yes. They have made a brand new engine specifically for ARR. They are also trying to make this engine run smoothly on as many different computer strengths as possible. They will release an updated benchmark and more accurate recommended PC specs later on once they have done some work in the alpha/beta. This will only get better as it gets closer and closer to the actual release of ARR.

4. Again yes. They have again completely changed the battle system from what it was to what it is currently. They are again changing it to what it currently is to what it will be for 2.0. Compared to what it is now, we'll have devastating new moves called "Limit Breaks" that will end off a combo that gets everyone in the party involved with. This will be similar to what FFXI was I imagine. Also, we will again be doing class and weapon skill based off TP. Our TP will constantly regererate similar to what the stamina gauge did at 1.0 release, but if we use too much of it in a short time, we'll have some sort of penalty. Like it'll start charging backup at a slower pace. We really don't know yet. This new battle system is intended to speed the pace of battle up. Even for those of us who have all combat jobs at lvl 50, we'll still need to learn the ins and outs of the new battle system with 2.0. It's safe to assume that the original game manual would be good fodder for a campfire. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Thank you, both, for your responses. This helps me to know what to look for and what to ignore. I'll be reading up on the Lore and stories on various wiki pages to get a better idea of what the 1.0 world was all about. I still have a few questions, but none of those aren't ones that can't wait for the release.

Thank you, again.

Oh, I do have a question!

Do the races in FFXIV have varied stats and 'preferred' classes as FFXI? Meaning, the Tarutaru were much better mages than the poor Galka, but couldn't take a hit as a galka paladin?

Also, I'm still having a hard time remembering the new racial names, and I'm still seeing them as Humes, Elvaan, Taru, etc. Does the community strongly prefer the new names and will they lynch me if I ever use the old ffxi names in-game?

I do, however, still reserve the right to call my Elezen friends 'Dhalmel'.... /grin

There are slight stat differences but not enough to really matter.

Will that change in 2.0? ¯し(ツ)_/¯

Many FFXI vets started out with the old names but many of us have converted. You shouldn't be lynched but I would make the attempt to learn the new ones as non FFXI vets won't have a clue what you are talking about.
