Letter from the Producer, XXXVII (10/26/2012)

Hello again to all you FFXIVers out there, and to all of you eagerly awaiting FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. Yoshi-P here, bringing you the thirty-seventh Letter from the Producer.

I know you’ve all been on pins and needles wondering when they would come, but as we recently announced in a Topics article, acceptance notifications for the alpha test of A Realm Reborn have finally been sent out!

So long as we don’t feel the bite of any deadly bugs while we finish preparations, the alpha test will begin on October 29, 2012. We’ve prepared a forum exclusively for alpha testers which includes schedule details, so be sure to check it out and ready yourselves for a whole new chapter in the history of Eorzea.

Also, we’re going to continue adding testers with each phase, so if you weren’t selected the first time around, you may still have a chance to lend your talents to the cause.

Though there are plans to release even more new info regarding ARR over the next few weeks, I know you guys don’t like to wait, so I snuck in a few screenshots of our stress testing the servers for your viewing pleasure.

Adventurers turned up in droves to put one of the new instanced dungeons, Tam-Tara Deepcroft, through its paces.

As you can see, the new engine can handle a lot of characters at once, and I even had the settings set to high. (In case you’re wondering, everyone is sporting exclusive alpha gear for the dungeon.)

In preparation for the beta and official release versions, we’ve also been testing new content that pits large groups against enormous foes. There’s some chatting going on in the log, but the content name is wrong. (lol)

One of our staff members took a widescreen snap while we were trading blows with the mighty adamantoise.

So, um, I haven’t actually told the marketing team about these screenshots yet, so they’re probably going to get mad. At any rate, our internal testing is over, and we’re bracing ourselves for the actual alpha.

Of course, the grand finale for the current version of the game is almost here as well. You won’t want to miss it, so be sure to glue yourselves to your monitors come November 11!

I know this letter was short, but it’s time for me to get back to working on the alpha test. Catch you all again soon!

EDIT: There are several screen shots that were posted above. There's one of many adventurers gathering in front of tam tara deepcroft. The 2nd is of 2 maybe 3 light parties helping each other take down one of the metal giant mobs who appears to be an NM. The third screenshot is of maybe 2 full parties of 8 all attacking an adamantoise NM.

Liking the adamantoise and the GIant they are fighting. Notice the Archer up there on the hill shooting down at it. Looks like it's shaping up nicely.

I reposted his letter in my blog and inserted comments into several portions of it. If interested, check it out. Thanks!

lol at an 100% exact copy of genbu from FFXI, copy and paste ahoy.

A model made 10 years ago still has it's uses.

I want to add my favorite part of the whole letter:

"So, um, I haven’t actually told the marketing team about these screenshots yet, so they’re probably going to get mad."

I wonder what they were thinking when they saw he did this and I wonder what they would say/do to anyone else if they had done this. Haha.

My favorite part was when he mentioned a grand finale on Now. 11. I won't be able to see it myself since for some reason I can't reactivate after Oct 1 (I know they said this beforehand I just don't know why they did it this way). However I hope those who can attend get something really amazing as a final ending to 1.0.

I understand perhaps in terms of relation to number of characters on the screen from FFXIV that seems like a lot, but that's hardly "a lot" of people on view distance. When I think of a lot I'm looking at certainly beyond what FFXI could show and this doesn't even seem to look like that.

I swear I detect a hint of pirate talk in the introductions lately. Tune in next week to hear Yoshida say,

"Shiver me FFXIVers, let's open some rum and speak about ARR, mateys." Smiley: clown

One out of every eight forum posters does know the meaning of the terms "100%," "exact," or "copy and paste."

If it wasn't for the clarification I would have assumed it was just traced...

In the screen-shot Yoshida described as displaying "a lot" of players, it looks to show about 28... so we know it can handle a single alliance, at least! Smiley: lol

Not saying this is the case... but what if 28 was at the lowest possible graphics settings? That still beats what some of the high end computers can do with the current version. :D
