Is it possible that was it? In a matrix style message we get "confound it, we've lost connection to the remote server!" followed by server shutdown and that is it?!

BEST. ENDING. EVER!!

I Am SO proud of them for not just wimping out at such a monumental moment in the game's history.

This cutscene rates as one of the most emotional and powerfully resonating of all FF games... as a returning player, I'm confident I will be back for ARR!!

Thank you SE for delivering. Good luck for ARR!

Near the end, I was dead just before the "elite forces" past the sector two gate. Balmung just had too many R0s to get any further.

So I lay there, unable to even see Meteor because there was a dumb rock blocking my way. I didn't want to risk teleporting back to Camp and R0ing for the last few minutes.

Since I died gloriously in battle, I was whisked away by a host of valkyrie to feast in Valhalla for the next two months.

Then I'll wake up in a military hospital in Ul'Dah muttering "Sarah....Sarah...."

CMIIW but the final moments of the game were supposed to mimic the large scale battle in the video... but the majority of people either experienced massive lag, frequent disconnects or were unable to connect at all? It seems like something that could have come off much better than it did.

I'm not certain the logistics of something like this, but it sounds like they could have made use of some phasing to make the event more realistic. Have people phased into instances depending on which area they were in with some NPCs showing off soon to come limitbreakish stuff, some flashy spells and maybe a sneak peek at some new class stuff. Then at a certain time everyone is lead into a cutscene that leads into the video. Unfortunate that they weren't able to pull it off, but I guess it's to be expected.

Hopefully the lead-in for 2.0 will be much smoother than the lead-out of 1.0

... what part of "Global server shutdown" did people misunderstand? There is nothing left to logon too. The servers are gone until ARR in 2013.

Enjoy the appropriately epic finale CS and quit your whining... you know what they say about assuming...

I didn't participate, but the last message on my game when I woke up this morning (yeah I stole a spot and slept through the event...) was something to the effect of "OMG that dragon statue in the cave started to come alive"... Not sure if that was idle chatter or not, but it was the last message on my log. It appears my client never crashed either.

The client crashes were primarily for those in Mor Dorna, because there were just too many **** people in the zone and it couldn't handle it.

The part where the server didn't actually allow you to login or stay connected to witness the event you paid money to be a part of up until the servers were supposed to come down? I think people get that the servers were coming down, but there was supposed to be something special for players to mark the end of 1.0 and the dawning of ARR. I know that many people who have been subscribing for the past however long they subscribed, did so to participate in content that would be gone when 2.0 hits. I would think this would be one of those things...

On the one hand, it sucks that all those dc's were happening and what not, but on the other hand, it actually generated interest from lots of people. Of course, all those people you drew back are probably thinking, fantastic, 2 years later and they still haven't fixed anything. The trailer was fantastic, the general idea was great, but it was all so poorly executed. You chose to invite everyone who's had an account from what, 18 servers to now 9 (not sure of the exact numbers), to log in simultaneously. Maybe SE was thinking the same as the rest of the community, all those players that quit won't ever be back!

Overall though, trailer included, SE did what they set out to do and that was get some people's attention. Whether it was the right type of attention, who knows.

I have to admit that I was shocked that there was so much interest. The streams I saw and videos posted after the event showed that there was far more interest than I thought there would be. Unfortunately for SE, that's a reason for excitement and disappointment all at the same time. It would be one thing if server-wide events hadn't been done before or if they were still new, but they aren't and even back when they were, they still came off better than this one did.

SE should have made this event part of beta testing. Use the alpha to stress test servers and once they made the necessary adjustments, open up beta to legacy members with this event in place. Instance the content so that people are greeted by the same stale UI and control scheme from 1.0 at first. You are lead through the intro battle and then at a key moment in the action, BAM... Bahamut melts faces.

The instance is interrupted by the video and a personalized cutscene with a little explanation on what happens leading up to the rebirth. You're then directed to the new character creation screen and when you finish making adjustments to your new(or old) character you get thrown into the shiny new 2.0 complete with overhauled interface, controls and all the other bells and whistles that come with it. I'm haven't always been on board with what SE has done in the past, but the buzz on something like that would make me secure a ticket to ride the bandwagon...

Dragons and Wyrms throughout histories religions and stories (fables, poems, myths, legends, whatever...) have been seen as the protectors or destroyers of earth or parts of it. If you want to stick with just games, Final Fantasy has used that theme way before WoW... **** before the internet.

Exactly. It's my stupidity that thought 12PM Midnight Sunday meant I could experience the finale anytime on Sunday. I didn't put much thought into it because I thought "there's no way SE will make us sign on at 3am for the finale that we've been paying for..."

And then, I read that even if I did stay up, I would have R0'd anyway. I really assumed this would just be instanced content that I could experience at my leisure at some point in 24hrs, since the game is global.

It really puts a sour end on a pretty good recovery. Makes me a bit doubtful of ARR when they are still making poor decisions like this.

The R0s were only really an issue in Mor Dorna, specifically around Brittlebark because so many people went there and just milled around. Once people started filtering out to Casa Nostrum and putting less strain on that part of the zone, others were able to log in again.

I got back in with an hour left, plenty of time to join in tearing the place up. (Not quite as epic as the cutscene made it out to be, but it was a good old fashioned multi player dungeon crawl.)
