On the one hand, it sucks that all those dc's were happening and what not, but on the other hand, it actually generated interest from lots of people. Of course, all those people you drew back are probably thinking, fantastic, 2 years later and they still haven't fixed anything.
I have to admit that I was shocked that there was so much interest. The streams I saw and videos posted after the event showed that there was far more interest than I thought there would be. Unfortunately for SE, that's a reason for excitement and disappointment all at the same time. It would be one thing if server-wide events hadn't been done before or if they were still new, but they aren't and even back when they were, they still came off better than this one did.
SE should have made this event part of beta testing. Use the alpha to stress test servers and once they made the necessary adjustments, open up beta to legacy members with this event in place. Instance the content so that people are greeted by the same stale UI and control scheme from 1.0 at first. You are lead through the intro battle and then at a key moment in the action, BAM... Bahamut melts faces.
The instance is interrupted by the video and a personalized cutscene with a little explanation on what happens leading up to the rebirth. You're then directed to the new character creation screen and when you finish making adjustments to your new(or old) character you get thrown into the shiny new 2.0 complete with overhauled interface, controls and all the other bells and whistles that come with it. I'm haven't always been on board with what SE has done in the past, but the buzz on something like that would make me secure a ticket to ride the bandwagon...
