The game isn't active right now. You'll have to wait a few months before you can play.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

No one knows. They're remaking the game and it's still in testing.

Probably search for FFXIV beta tester application or something, I dunno. Better look quick though because I think they were closing the application process soon, if they haven't already.

They've already closed the alpha application on December 12th. They will release a new beta tester application closer to the time they begin the beta test which last yoshi-p has said was late January early February. We should be getting an updated timeline sometime soon. He said in his last letter from the producer live that he planned on releasing the timeline before next year. So hopefully within the next 2 weeks or so. Probably sooner since he's already given it out to other parts of the company for approval.

They're still selling the game when you can't login and play? I thought they removed sales for the game during downtime. I hope this doesn't cause a lot of confusion for people.

did not want to start a new thread and i cannot find a solution so here goes,as it kinda seems to fit on here.

I was playing the game before the server merges around feb 2012, found my security token organising my desk and decided to see what ever happened to ffxiv .
i see the new version and that we get to export our characters but im a bit lost on what exactly will happend to the chars that did not make the first server merge.

I would guess now i have to pay in order to play untill version2.0 , and that it will only move my data (if is even posible) from my old characters, or will my character will be gone for good.

Im eager to see what have changed but as i do not know if i lost my character for good , i cant decide if re-activate or not.

basically if i lost my char data i will wait as the new game will be free, but i would love to give it the old ffxiv a go before it dies with my old char data.

Anyhow if anyone have or is expriencing a similar situation i would love to know a lite bit more.

I been searching all over before asking , but i can not find a clear answeer on the subject.

All characters were merged into their appropriate server regardless of when you last logged in. When v2.0 launches you will have the 30 days free just like most MMO launches. Think of it as a brand new launch that you pre-ordered. With all that said, you won't be able to play until the new launch.
