Most people were hoping for Q1 release. But with the alpha just ending in December doesn't this time frame seem highly unlikely? For example stacraft 2 heart of the swarm has been in beta for many months now and is not due out until mid to late march.

Looking more like late Q2 or early Q3 at this rate. So, yeah the release will be later than hoped for, and it'll be early to mid summer most likely.

Everyone does beta differently and it also depends on where the game is at.

I would not be surprised by a 2 month beta then release a month after.

There was never a release date set, only overly optimistic people thought it would release end of 2012 or by march 2013 even though there's zero indications the game would have launched then.

July 2013 best bet or shortly after Seekers for XI launches.

Is there even a release date for SoA yet?

Don't think so.

And Yoshi-P absolutely should not release until he is 100% sure its ready, period.

Not sure about "zero" indications given. There was never a release date, this is true, but the official ARR roadmap gave plenty of indication the game would be launched by end of 2012, beginning 2013 or at least be in the 2.0 free trial era. Obviously, many of us knew this was a longshot and not likely, but there were official tentative dates provided:

http://wdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/download/en/FFXIV_2.0_Roadmap_EN.pdf

It's been said there's an updated roadmap in the works where we'll see new timelines, but people thinking FFXIV 2.0 would be released by end of 2012 or march 2013 weren't necessarily just being optimistic, there was official documentation to back up such claims and indications.

I *remotely* remember that roadmap was edited a couple of months ago... wasn't it?
Boy, I don't want to make that decision. I mean, the decision about when something is
"ready enough".

I have trust in Yoshi's discretion in this case. The deciding factor is ultimately in his hands which is more than we can say for Tanaka. That, and Yoshida is much more of a perfectionist.

I expected a later than announced release and I'm more than ok with it. More than enough going on in my life right now and when I do get to return to FFXIV, I'd rather they err on the side of caution when it came to quality.

There is supposed to be a new one coming at some point soon, not sure when, probably when the Alpha is done.

I don't believe that the Roadmap had been edited per se; however, during an interview with a producer (perhaps Yoshi P? I don't remember it was shortly before XIV went offline) it was stated that according to the roadmap, they were ~1month&2weeks behind schedule. This is what lead to the March release belief.

They haven't commented since, but given how precise they were about the time delay previously, I have no reason to believe that July/August is now the intended target.

Sorry to keep everyone waiting on a new roadmap! I'd like to offer you all an update in place of Yoshi-P, who hasn't come up for a breath of air in between finalizing the close of the Alpha Test and prepping for the start of the Beta Test.

We've completed the initial draft of the roadmap and it's currently being checked by each region's Legal department. After it's finalized, it will be localized into English, French, and German.

We're pulling out all the stops to release it soon, so hang in there just a bit more.

I understand that the release date discussed is the official retail release date. Do we know about when it'll be available to play again for all people who bought 1.0? (ie. open beta kind of period) This is the important date for people who just want to get back to playing and aren't interested in fresh servers, right? (though I do want to join a fresh server, I'm just curious) Or will people only be able to continue playing with their old characters after official release?

Unless you get into beta testing, you won't be playing again until release.

Character data during testing is not being stored. The cap for alpha is 20 and probably won't expand much further than that for beta. There is a fair bit of work involved in restoring character data to servers and since there may be bugs which may or may not affect that data, it's not likely that you'll be able to play your old character for testing phase.

Feedback for alpha testing is closed and the client and forums close in a week so we should have a better idea soon.

Yoshi-P did say the plan was Q1, but later said he needed to update the roadmap for delays. We should get a new roadmap when Beta starts, but I always assumed March-ish.
