I beta tested the game, and really didn't care for it, but seeing the recent videos has get me hyped, so once again, I'm on the hype train. I've been waiting for another console MMO since EQOA, and this is really luring me in.

So the main question I'll be asking myself til launch is if I wanna go for Paladin or Monk first :P

Haha. Yeah, it's hard for me, because both Tanks, and hand-to-hand users appeal to me, and I kinda wanna focus on one equipment set at once for the most part (aside from the stuff needed to unlock the job souls)...so that choice is even tougher than which race, which I haven't decided on either :P

I'll probably go the Elvaan route (forget the name at the moment) and start with one of the battle classes, just so I have it. I want to get into crafting early. I don't want to roll Male Mi'qote, seeing as everyone will be doing that and female Rogedyn.

Yeah, I tend to go with male characters or female characters depending on my mood, so race/gender will all depend on what I feel like making. Though if I focus on Pugilist, I might just go with Female Mi'qote, since they look kinda awesome as Pugilists/Monks :P

If they keep the same system as before, and you want to be a PLD eventually, you'll want to look at Gladiator and Conjurer Smiley: wink

Yup...Conj leveling might be interesting, luckily, I only have to get it to 15+, which is fine with me...though I tend to stick to melee mostly, though summoner might be nice

Of course how you approach the game is entirely up to you but I found that with the system they had in place for 1.0 (and I don't think they are changing it that fundamentally for ARR) the interchangeability of jobs/classes will mean you may decide to level up multiple jobs to help unlock your PLD as has been stated but also to give you some more flexibility to get into parties/end-game stuff/dungeon raids etc. From what I have seen of the video's that are online the combat system abilities are different so what went on in 1.0 might not necessarily apply to ARR. PLD and MNK were both good jobs in 1.0 and I really hope they can refine them further for ARR. Mostly looking forward to levelling up a new job though.

I left FFXIV when they wanted me to pay for it. I know it has huge potential but just couldnt get myself to subscribe for what seemed like a beta. I'm really looking forward to ARR however. I'm not sure if it's because it was my first MMO, or there was just something magical about it, but FFXI will always have a place in my heart. As corny as that sounds.

I was on the SWTOR forums and they were talking about macros. I remembered swapping gear arround between accuracy and attack to dexterity/agility on my THF for higher burst in SATA. Ahh, those were the days. And the time I accidentally skill chained SATAVS, but ended up watching the dragonfly's health just DROP. Really I was just ****** at the tanks not cooperating, so I was just gonna do it behind whoever, and not care if they died. The SC was a complete accident, though epic.

I also play mostly melee in any game, usually the stealthy burst class. But before I quit FFXIV I made a character solely for THM and CNJ, just to test it out. I rather enjoyed it. It makes me regret not taking up more classes in FFXI. Smiley: frown

Can't wait for ARR! Sadly I got an alpha invite, but had very little bandwidth left and didnt check my email the day they sent the alpha invite to me. Smiley: frown

The only thing I dislike so far is the go her kill these mobs, or go here get these items type of quests.

Everything else rocks!

This isn't directed only at you, but I see this comment A LOT.

What other kinds of quests would you have? Everyone says "Oh they could do so much more" but I've yet to hear anyone suggest something different.

I think the problem is that we grew up with games that disguised these things for us a bit. It used to be:

"Oy guv! Them marauders came into the castle and 'alf inched the princess! Salty lot they was, not some to be trifled wif. The palace gottin' their knickers in a twist, and I doubt they'll find her royal highness in time. If you've got the stones fer it, we could use yer help in savin' the princess!"

Which turned into "Go to this dungeon, kill these 10 mobs we put in your way, and walk back to town with the princess." Same thing, better presentation.

People want to feel like they're affecting the realm, not running errands for the fat grocer who is too busy cheating on his wife with the baker's daughter to gether his own mushrooms.

The thing is, XIV 1.0 did that and people complained about the wall-o-text dialogue from the NPCs.

An actually compelling narrative reason is important, as someone else said. I think it's also important that you mix up your defense/support/stealth/platforming/etc. missions. Mini-game mechanics with a meaningful narrative are also helpful. Games that make you really explore the world, get some place, etc... rather than literally "kill 10 wolves."

catwho wrote:

I didn't hang around long enough to see this, but I never had any complaint with it in XI and wouldn't have a complaint with it in XIV. When it's LITERALLY a wall of text, not an NPC actually talking to you, then it's annoying. In FFXI, the NPCs actually talked to you in a cutscene.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

XI's quests were pretty cool, but there weren't that many of them, and they weren't intended for leveling. When you're creating a questing system whose purpose is to advance the player through levels, the rules are a little different.

Quests have to be simple enough that leveling isn't a chore (especially when you consider alts, or in this case other jobs). Breaking up the monotony of the Kill X of Y quests with other more interesting quests is a fine balancing act. Too much of the other stuff and the game starts to feel like it has no cohesion, too little and it gets samey and bland.

Ideally, quests should be broken up further with alternative leveling paths, like dungeons, or quests that advance the game's story. With the right mix of these things, it never really bothers you that some of your quests are Kill X of Y, you don't care because it isn't ALL you're doing.

When the game's path and design are keeping you engaged in what you're doing, you don't have time to notice that some of your quests are "Grind"

Lmao! So the problem is not that you have to kill 20 rats, is that they tell you have to kill 20 rats <.< instead of telling you "Thou would be so kind as to save blue blood from being spilled ? How you ask young adventurer ? by taking the lives of 20 rodents!"

Is the same **** really..... i really hated it when there was like 5 scenes, 10 parragraphs in XIV just to tell me to check out an airship that crashed near uldah.... Like really ? all that to tell me to check this airship out... and when i get there, there is not even an airship out lol

Archmage Callinon brought up a good point, If the quests are to be the main way to level will they be repeatable? If I choose Lance/Dragoon as my main and later wanna switch it up will I be forced to grind mobs forever...or maybe the guildleve system will still be there I dont know.

I'm pretty sure that Yoshi P said that there would be enough "quests" to level 1 or 2 jobs to cap. The intention though is for people to mix it up. Do some quests, some levequests, some instances, some behests etc.

I think that the plan is for people to mix and match as you see fit - you can take a little from column A, a little from column B etc. If you are expecting enough "kill 20 rats and come back to me" quests to reach cap on all jobs - I suspect you will be disappointed.

At the end of the day, some people love those sorts of quests in the style of WoW (and most other MMORPG's out there). Some don't. I like the idea that I can do some quests, quickly do a few leves, then go and do something completely different.

What I do find interesting is that at the release of Version 1.0, people were crying out in the forums for quests of that type. Now that we have seen questing in ARR and have seen the kill X mobs style of quests, everyone is QQ'ing about another WoW clone.Thats the interwebs I suppose.

Variety is the spice of life!

People were clamouring for generic, wall-of-text, point-the-way quests to be delivered from "floating exclamation point" NPCs?

Or were they asking for something more involved than guildleves?
