DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGITEK?
March 14, 2013
Greetings, seekers of knowledge.
Fernehalwes here, and for this post I come to you with an actual scoop du jour!
While Project Manager M was diligently crafting away, I slipped over to the BG design section and snapped a few shots of what I’d bet my Meteor Survivor shirt to be...magitek armor!
Screenshot

But what kind of area would house this many─ OH... ;)
Screenshot

Now, while the map and armor are obviously still just mockups, word has it that Yoshi-P has already given the final OK on the designs, so now comes the polish.
But why wait for polish, when I can borrow the keys to the prototype and take a little test spin on the internal servers...

Totally rocking that in Dragoon AF for complete badass effect. I can just head-canon Lin leaping off the Armor to slam Jump on someone's poor head.

Very nice! The Magitek armor is shaping up! Makes me want to break out FFVI! I hope they continue to add little things from previous FF titles and intertwine them with FFXIV's current setting. I'd love to see a job added later with the ability to "morph" like Terra from FFVI.

I nostalgia hard for FF6 every time I see pictures of magitek stuff. Man that'll be fun.

The major question is whether they'll be summoned from a puff of smoke and hop about like WoW mounts while we're followed around by our cute WoW-style pets.

What I mean to say is that I know we all love FFVI, but context matters. If everyone could ride around on Bahamut's back, well, Bahamut would become significantly less awesome. Hopefully this isn't just some superficial addition to cash in on nostalgia; though I suppose that's really all SE has left these days -- and there's no denying that it clearly works for them.

It was confirmed a while a go that these would be primarily mounts, but would also take part in a couple missions designed around them. Yoshida also went on to say that he'd be looking into further uses in the future. He's well aware that people want the whole "I get to blast stuff with Magitek Armor!" request.

Personally, I hope it becomes a PvP element.

"Sup Byches! I'm-a chagrin my Laazoooor!!!!!!"

>.> Yes. I'm still stoked about this. FFVI is my favorite Final Fantasy of all time.

Looks nice!

Maybe it will be a good idea to tie it in with a specific class like summoner and primals.

From the pictures, they seem to be in a docking bay of sorts. I certainly hope there are enemies that mount these things, because that would be a FUN fight. Personally, I'd like to see this in a raid or instance - like maybe at the end when you're escaping said facility and need to mow down that last pesky group of enemies. That would be way cool.

That looks pretty sweet, though I see the wings sticking out and think they better not be pulling some Evangelion **** with these.

You successfully tempered my enthusiasm. However, I will say that as far as run-of-the-mill mounts go, they could do worse.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Hmmm... not sure if I get what you mean by saying Evangelion as I've actually never seen it... but I'm going to assume those robots flew and that won't be the case here, lol.

The design of the armor is 100% based off of Amano's artwork from FF6: http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-01/art/ff1-ff6-terra_magitek2.jpg And if the gears from FF6 didn't fly, I think it's safe to assume the same here.

Though, I do hope we get a black chocobo that we can soar around in one day!

Yeah, I really like that the design is based off of Amano's Magitek Armor, seeing as while I don't like his humans, he can draw some pretty good equipment and the like :P

They did not fly:

They were actually an alien creature that had been armored in a way that they looked like a mecha.

My favorite, which I'll never forget, was this MNK named Soundwave. Met him in Yuhtunga, and he had a Boost macro (which he activated every 15 seconds without fail) that said PUMP UP THE VOLUME. It was hilariously obnoxious.
