From what I understand, they're simply vanity pets. Nothing more.

They are used to clutter up the space around characters, to generally look stupid dashing across the environment looping through the same idle animations every 10 seconds, and to overall just make things look a bit more like WoW.

You just have to look at it this way. If they add content you don't like, odds are someone does. If these people keep paying for the game you like, it will stay alive longer. It's kinda like nerfing. If you keep bringing everyone down to the lowest level, no one can have fun. Instead you have to look at your weaknesses and bring those areas up to where the action is. Choice should always be a good thing.
