I was hoping to be a Black Mage and have cooking as my craft. What Disciple should I choose? War & Magic or Hand?

If I'm understanding this incorrectly please set me straight.

ThanksSmiley: nod

The various classes are divided amongst the city-states as follows:

Note: you can be every combat, harvesting, and crafting class on one character. They all level up independently and can be changed by changing your currently equipped main-hand weapon/item through the Armoury system. You can also mix and match certain abilities from different classes to further customize your character.

Disciples of War & Magic (Combat)
Disciples of the Land (Harvesting)
Disciples of the Hand (Crafting)

Limsa Lominsa:
- Marauder (Warrior)
- Arcanist (Summoner)*
- Fisher
- Culinarian
- Blacksmith
- Armorer

Gridania:
- Archer (Bard)
- Conjurer (White Mage)
- Lancer (Dragoon)
- Botanist
- Leatherworker
- Carpenter

Ul'dah
- Gladiator (Paladin)
- Thaumaturge (Black Mage)
- Pugilist (Monk)
- Miner
- Alchemist
- Goldsmith
- Weaver

I mean...you....you answered your own question.

If you want to be a black mage.. then thaumaturge is what turns into a black mage.

Maybe I'm not understanding your confusion?

The Disciples are only an umbrella term for the classes/skills that fall beneath them. If you want to be a Black Mage, you will choose the Disciple of Magic class, Thaumaturge. When you level that to 30, and Pugilist to 15, you can unlock the Black Mage quest. You don't have to stay as one thing throughout the game... It's encouraged that you don't, actually.

You don't have to choose one or the other. It's very flexible, you can be them all.

Ok. I was assuming you had to choose on Disciple. So if I'm understanding correctly I can choose Disciple of Magic to become BLM and not have to chose Disciple of the Hand just to do cooking. So even though I chose DoM I can still choose cooking as a craft?

What if I chose DoH can I still become a BLM?

Disciples are like categories that classes/jobs are put into.

I think I get it.

The various disciplines are just categories for the classes to sit in. They're meaningless beyond that.

When you create a character you'll choose its starting class from either the discipline of war or magic categories. All this determines is what you start as. You can change classes later by equipping different weapons or tools. Jobs are a different thing that get unlocked later in the game, but they are related to the classes you have leveled.

The categories only stand to tel lyou the difference, and were sometimes used on gear in 1.0

"Equipable by Discipline of Land" was a common qualifier on Gathering gear.

To put it simply when you change class you change discipline as well.

For example: You are currently a black mage. You change job to Culinarian (cook). You have changed from a Disciple of Magic to a Disciple of the Hand.

I don't think I'm breaking NDA by saying this is also definitely the case in 2.0.
