PC, PS3, or both?Follow

I've been going back and forth on this for a while, I'll probably start on PC, since I won't have to buy it again. Eventually I think I'll swith to PS3. I like having my laptop available as reference without having to alt tab out of the game. So I guess I'll have it available to play on both at some point. Still unsure if I'll use controller on PC or go with keyboard and mouse...

What is everyone else planning to play on?

Mainly on PC to start. I want to get a copy for PS3 but mine has been acting a little moody these days. Also it depends on whether you need to use the PS3 game key on my 1.0 account in order to play on that system. I've heard that this will be the case, but not sure if it has been 100% confirmed by SE. I already bought 1.0 and wouldn't mind the option to dual box occasionally on PC and PS3,but if I have to use the PS3 game key on my original account then i might pass on the PS3 version. I don't want to buy two (more) copies just to dual box from time to time.

PC, however, I'm debating on getting controller/game pad for it. Not too sure how that'll work out since I'll need to keep a keyboard handy to type messages or push-to-talk for VOIP programs.

What would be the perks of having both?

Both. Since my girlfriend plays too, and it would be nice to just sit on the couch sometimes.

Both. Probably. My PC is my own but I have to share the big TV with others, so PS3 time has to be declared well in advance. No one is allowed to touch my PC without my permission. Do own both but I very much doubt I will buy for PS3 - for similar reasons to those people posting above. Only problem I have now is my daughter and son both asking to play my character all the time - they already addicted to Ni No Kuni, my wife thinks I am starting to corrupt them in my gaming ways (what she doesn't know is they are well past the corruption stage!).

I used controller for pretty much my entire FFXI career and enjoyed it. Since then every game I've played has been with keyboard and mouse, but I'm definitely interested in switching back. I like moving better with a controller, I feel more in control having a joystick to move as opposed to directional keys. I would have a keyboard on my lap (now I have a tray to put it on) and it worked quite well actually.

PS3. My wireless keypad will help with typing, which is really all I was concerned about. I played XI on my laptop using the number pad to move, not a mouse. Just used shortcut keys to access any menus and such. I'm sure I'll be good with a controller.

Any recommendation on a pad? I thought I read that the PS3 controller is compatible but I really don't want to invest that much into it. On the other hand I don't want to underspend and get something of inferior quality. Any happy medium for a quality pad?

Can anyone comment more on the VOIP. I'll probably play on both eventually. Ill start on my PC and probably move to ps3 in the end. I did use my ps3 controller with 1.0 and didn't gripe it worked for me. As far as VOIP, I never really got into it but started looking around when I saw a clip of a party of 8 with at least 3-4 communicating with each other. Anyone know of a good program?

I know back in XI, people used Ventrilo a lot. If you just have a few friends, Skype would work. There's something else out there now, Raspberry Pi? Wint will know more about that.

I actually use this one when applicable for games, because it plays exactly like a PS3 controller and is like half the cost. I actually got one last year for $9.99 I think... thought it was from amazon, but now I can't remember. I'm almost positive PS3 controllers will work for the PC version, considering the game will be available on PS3.

Teamspeak is another excellent program, but it kinda requires someone to have a server, which I think they all cost money now. If you're looking for a completely free one, I highly recommend C3. It's still in beta as far as I know, but it's completely free, you can set up your own channels, and it has a super easy user interface.

The VoIP standards right now for MMOs are Ventrillo, Mumble, and to a lesser extent TeamSpeak.

Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized computer that you can install a mumble server on.

The Xbox 360 controller works quite well on PC. I've used it for Battlefield 3, Batman AC, FFXI, FFXIV 1.0/2.0 (gridania), and any other game that allows use of gamepad.

Well Yoshi-P and his crew have been sporting the standard logitech gamepad to great effect. It's a lot cheaper than that in most stores though.

Then there is also a Snakebyte Ps3 wired controller for $10. When my girlfriend and I started up on FFXI again we bought two of these and they worked great on PC. However her right thumbstick ended up breaking somehow after a few months. Mine is still fine though.

Then there's always the wired 360 controller from Game Stop that I'm currently using for everything, even though I do prefer the Playstation controllers. It also comes in black and possibly other colors as well for $26.

I suggest the 360 controller from Game Stop. It functions perfectly with all games just like an official Microsoft one, but for $14 less. I rarely buy things from them, but this is something that I highly recommend for all PC gaming. Since pretty much all games that allow a controller on PC today support the 360 controller it makes setup almost non existent. IMO it's the best value for the price. My friend has had his same one for 3+ years and mine has been kicking fine for the past 6 months.

I believe Snakebyte was also the company that released the official FFXIV controller, however I don't know if it's quality is much better than the $10 PS3 model.

One last thing. Do NOT use a wireless controller via a USB cord (PS3 style) unless you research what it takes to properly run it on your system. I attempted to do so to play FFXI last year and it resulted in many BSODs, even with a program to run it. Getting a wired controller that is plug and play is much more convenient.

Thanks for the info on the VOiP. As for 1.0 I used my ps3 controller with a free third party app. It was long ago and can't remember the app. I did pull it from a YouTube post back then. Again it worked great at the time. Didn't message much just followed orders back then and still do so no real need for typing.

I have it. I got it because I found it for the same price as the regular one, so I figured why not. It's very well built, though I can't say if that means its better than the PS3 model. The only thing I don't like about it is that the buttons are labelled 1-14 (or however many there are) so when you are trying to reconfigure what each button does in some games its incredibly annoying. Assassin's Creed 3 comes to mind. It took me forever to configure it what a PS3 controller would normally be, which made stuff like fighting off wolves (where you have to press triangle when prompted on screen) impossible. Once I finally figured it out it was fine, but it can be a bit of a hassle.

Haha yeah, I read that after I posted my comment XD. I wanted one pretty bad when I first saw them. The reqular one isn't terrible, but you can feel the cheapness of the plastics and craftsmanship with wobbly shoulder buttons and somewhat loose joysticks.

Every gamepad I've used does the whole numbered buttons thing during setup, even an offical PS3 model. It's annoying when you first start to mess with it, but eventually you get used to it and what buttons are what numbers.

Edit: I looked at the pic of the FFXIV controller and noticed that the buttons were actually numbered on the controller as well lol. Yeah, that would take some getting used to. My Snakebyte was a PS3 model so they must have added the standard button symbols to it.

In that case, I highly reccommend it. This one is definitely not cheaply built. Just messing with it now, and the shoulder buttons and joysticks fit snug and it really does feel solid. I'd rate it as slightly less quality than a PS3 controller, but not by much. Now that I know that all controllers do the numbered button thing, I'm extremely satisfied with it.

I got it out again and fiddled with it. the PS3 model isn't too bad, but the thumbsticks don't feel like they have the resistance that a normal PS3 or 360 controller has, I don't think they would be great for any sort of twitch gaming.

Yeah, then I'm sure that the FFXIV model is built differently, as I just compared it my PS3 controller and they felt almost identical. I also felt it translated quite well when playing, where the controller was pretty responsive to movements and button presses. I haven't used PS3 controller on my PC yet to compare, but I'm guessing it will hold up fairly well.

Oh and anyone for some reason has a controller that the game doesn't support, Xpadder 5.3 is amazing. You have to download a Microsoft application compatibility program to run it on Windows 7, but it is well worth it. I've been playing Thief 1 with a controller to moderate effect and am Looking forward to trying Morrowind or Oblivion with it as well. It can even map mouse movement, which is pretty awesome.

With 1.0 I was using a 360 controller on PC.

But I don't like sitting at my PC for an extended period of time now a days, so I really dont know what I'm going to do.

I might take a look at a better chair, or just move in a couch and bigger monitor/TV in my computer room and play on that...

When I was younger I used to pull up a stationary cushioned armchair sometimes and play on our computer. I don't know if your desk setup would work for it, but it is comfy XD.

I have a chair shaped like a bowl, and the PC tower hooked up to a 40 inch sony monitor (I guess you can't call them TVs if they don't have tuners? Just found that out, anyway...) in the living room. I would LOVE to use the PS3, or at least the controller. I've been using a rolling TV tray that you can put the keyboard and mouse on for gaming. Very comfortable, but I can't recline.

So lazy lol...

I used to have a club chair I'd use but our cat trashed it.

I actually might just move the monitor closer to the ground, as I like sitting on the floor and I won't have to buy anything, lol.

I used to have a club chair I'd use but our cat trashed it.

I actually might just move the monitor closer to the ground, as I like sitting on the floor and I won't have to buy anything, lol.

My 32" tv is wall mounted above my monitor (also wall mounted) and I use it as a second monitor if I need to. If I don't feel like sitting at my desk I'll switch to the tv and recline on my bed. I put a lot of thought into being lazy Smiley: tongue

That could work XD. Plus they have fairly cheap little gaming chairs that sit low to the ground that rock. Or if you have a van with removable bucket seats you could use one of them like my friend did for a while. lol

I'm going to go both so I can play on my PC and watch TV or play on the TV if I don't feel like watching anything as well. Will probably PC for dungeons for the accuracy.
