So with the game's release imminently upon us, much of the game's success or failure will depend on what the "talking pages" are saying. Granted actual game experience will be the ultimate measure of ARR, but at the end of the day if the magazines are touting XIV's triumphant return it will go a long way to bringing back old friends and those who never gave it a shot in the first place... and with WoW recently losing over a million subscribers, I suspect at least a small portion of them may very well be looking for something new to sink their blade into Smiley: wink

With that said, I'm starting to see some video game outlets starting to advise their readers to give XIV a second chance. I came across this article which was just posted yesterday.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/408926/previews/10-reasons-final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-deserves-a-second-chance/

It's very good to see that the game is getting respect from the media (albeit I believe there may be a piece or two of misinformation in this article lol)... and what's even more promising is that the game actually looks **** good, this will go a long way to draw in the skeptics!

For as much flak as SE takes, and trust me, I'm the first to admit I've been critical of them recently... I must say I'm exceedingly impressed with their ability to take a disaster and turn it into something with true potential.

I agree it's nice to see new articles about the game, however this one seems pretty shallow, and contains some misinformation. For instance, it states that if you buy a PS3 version you get a PC version as well... not true. Also, having jumping, character data transfer, playing all races as male and female are pretty lame for a top 10 list of bringing players back to the game. I'd much rather have seen them delve into new stuff like FATEs, dungeon finder, etc. Oh well, I guess any positive publicity is good for them.

Agreed that isn't the best article written as it seems to focus more on "what broken things SE fixed" rather than the many things that are fresh. But I guess the writer was trying to do just that: Reassure us the broken things are corrected...and he didn't really break NDA doing it. At any rate, I support any pro-final fantasy xiv post. The community needs it. Square needs it.

I made a similar comment when an earlier promotional video made it a point to show off how the game had a mail system.

I think it IS important to focus on what ARR is doing now in the way of content (FATE, dungeons, duty finder, free companies, etc), but because this IS a re-launch I think it's extremely important that people go in knowing that the thing they couldn't believe the game did wrong, has been fixed.

When you're asking people to give the game a second chance, it's important that they aren't thinking "meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Hmm, that's a good point. I guess the one that really set me off was carrying over data from 1.0, as that doesn't seem like something that people reading that article would have much interest in. Heck, they could have delved into how the lag has been greatly reduced, or that the UI is far more intuitive if they were wanting to talk about broken stuff to be fixed. I guess I would think that most people who played 1.0 would either know that the data was transferring, or really wouldn't care as they'd be starting over. Perhaps I'm just thinking of it too much from my own mentality though.

I suspect that the downloader for the PC version will eventually end up like the one in XI - pretty much freely available. So no, while SE won't mail you a PC version along with your PS3 pre-order, as long as your account is in good standing you shouldn't have any issues finding a copy of the PC version that works without paying any extra. The real "sale" of the games is in the account number. FFXI can be installed on an infinite number of computers, but only one account can be played on a system at any given time.

(Also clearly the same is not true for purchasing the PC version and being able to freely download the PS3 version. Hence, if you're going to spring the cash for one version only, buy the PS3 one. The account will be good on PC and you'll have a much easier time getting the game for free on PC.)

One of the main issue people were having is the lack of content to keep you busy. That could have definitely been added in there as it looks like that has been improved.

Content can more easily be added than changing core gameplay mechanics. I personally quit because I couldn't deal with the mechanics beyond level 15ish, not because there was a lack of things for me to do.

Speaking of things that are nice to see...

I'm not advocating anyone ditch these forums for elsewhere but I really like what I've seen from the XIV reddit group. Lots of good people offering helpful information... and amazingly... almost no trolls. So it's a good place to frequent in between your visits to ZAM... and it's fairly active too. I got me some sweet ARR wallpapers from there. :)

Haha...

I guess I should add, that it's even more surprising given that reddit is more in the public sphere (and therefore more likely to draw critics) than ZAM which is more of a community site.

And Wint, I'm gonna be giving subbing soon, so you better be nice to me! :P

It's like navigating any site really. To find the XIV page just google FFXIV reddit and it will take you there.

There are threads alongside the left hand of the page... some threads are posts like this one, others are direct links to images, videos, other urls, etc. Then the discussion posts are listed underneath the setting.

Oh and you need to login to post.

That's about it. :P

Even though the article may lack depth, and has a possible inaccuracy... the fact is, they are encouraging people to go pick up the game and give it a try. Not to mention the screen shots look very nice, which will be encouraging to those wondering what this game is all about.

Hopefully this sort of press will continue especially with some of the bigger publications.

(the site ate my first attempt at posting this Smiley: glare)

I agree that the article is rather shallow and superficial. Still, it's good press that exposes the game to people who may not have considered it before. Hopefully we have lots of people who decide to try out the open beta and love the game enough to purchase it.

I found it interesting that on MMORPG.com FFXIV was 'voted' 4th for top games in development, and for the past week 5th for most popular game (Which includes released games). I think it is based on hit counts?

There is definitely some hype IMO.

Ridiculous as that sounds, yeah... a lot of people pointed to the fact that your character could be stymied by a one-foot high fence as an example of everything wrong with the world.

If you'd like another... in Aion (at least at the beginning, don't know about now), your character was a daeva. An immortal angelic being possessed of great power. Step into a pool, you sink like a stone and drown.

It's little things like that.

No, I get it, still ridiculous. It's like saying that the biggest problem with a house with no roof or walls is that the door sticks. The Aion example is pretty funny though Smiley: lol

Yoshii P gets mad respect for what he has managed to do up until now. When i first played 14 i tried to stick with it and managed to get con and thm to 40 before finally saying "ok i can't do leves anymore".

When i came back at the beggining of august and played through the missions and eventually downed the white raven, i realised i had not had that much fun playing an MMO since ff11. This is what is giving me the feeling ARR will be awesome. It's also nice to see that media is also saying good things about it.

Except for X-play. I'm really curious about what they are going to say lol.
