Will FFXIV be alt friendly?Follow

In FFXI, you could roll an alt but be ready to beat missions again, get keys, sky access, sea access, etc. etc. . . It was a heavy task for players who didn't have time to play all day. While I love the idea of mastering all jobs on one character as we did back then, I wonder if such accomplishments will be shared on your account with alts the way some achievements are in modern MMOs.

The reason I'm wondering is, I'd like to create a male character for all my DoW and a female for all my DoM. It doesn't seem to be looking like a possibility and I'll most likely have to choose. The fun thing about rolling alts is being able to design your character around the specific school of battle you choose. A Night Elf totally embodies the Druid class in WoW, whereas Orcs perfectly fit Warrior. I don't RP much, but it's nice to "get into character" sometimes. A Roegadyn male with huge scars doesn't exactly scream WHM to me, but he fits the Marauder perfectly. A small, dainty mi'qote may not look like a battle hardened axe wielding monster; but she would make an awesome BRD or ARC.

I'm cool with it either way, but I wonder if FFXIV will be a bit more alt friendly in that regard. What do you guys think?

I can't imagine there would be any reason for prejudice against alt characters. As amusing as the thought of forming a lynch mob because someone wants to play a different race is, I really don't think anyone will care let alone get upset, if you do make multiple characters. By the way, I would LOVE to party with a scarred battle-harden Roegadyn that can make all my booboos go away~ I'd also have the time of my life with Paladin Lalafell x3

Edit My mistake~ I let my imagination wander while reading your post lol

If it's anything like 1.0, I'm guessing it won't be alt friendly and you'll have to redo everything on your new character. I'm in the same boat. I'd really like to make a female miqote, more-so for stuff like swimsuits and schoolgirl... er, scholar outfits. Then I'd like to make either a male miqote or a male rogaedyn as my main for my tanky-damagey guy. Unfortunately I think it's going to mean doing everything twice. Oh well, not much you can really do about that...

Quick question. .kinda on topic:

I never played FFXIV but I did play FFXI and I was able to level multiple classes on a single character (as you all know) Just to be sure I understand, I can still do this in XIV, right?

For instance, go x levels into warrior, get bored and start leveing WM. All under the same character..

There shouldn't be anything stopping you from making alts, but if it's like the original version and FFXI, they may charge you for the additional character slots each month if it reaches a certain point. (Something like $1.00 per slot.)

The only reason I can think of to have an alt is for aesthetics or to go through each city's or grand company's story line. I only played 1.0 for a month though, so I might be wrong.

Coming from MMO's with P2P systems i must say that as much as i love ARR and want to succeed and all the "pay extra money for character slots while i am already paying for a sub" is by far the most retarted thing i've seen. I flat out don't like it. Sure i don't do many alts and yes i will be able to level everything in 1 character but to hold me down with 1 slot per server unless i pay more money is for me at least ridiculous.

Ok after this rage i should also mention that i am a fan of FF ARR....Thank you. Smiley: tongue

Nope... your 15/month gets you 8 characters per server, with a 40 character worldwide limit.

Yea but i believe if i remember correctly that is the third option with the legacy having all those slots for 10 or so per month while the normal users for 10/month get 1 per server and don't remember how many for all the servers.

I could be wrong but thats how i remember it.

Legacy players get that same deal for 10/month.

There's some kind of wacky "intro" plan for non-legacy players where you pay like 12/month and get 1 character per server, 4 worldwide, or something like that. It's stupid so I ignored it Smiley: clown

Wait so when you say non-legacy you mean everyone else or the ones that have 1.0 codes?

Non-legacy meaning everyone that does not have legacy status.

Having a 1.0 code doesn't get you the preferred pricing plan. You have to be legacy for that.

Oh. Yeah. It was in that wacko pricing grid they had.

It's for non-legacy strictly for the reason that legacy players get more than that at a lower price. There's no equivalent plan for legacy players that they've announced.

you know, the problem with ff11 was that it took forever to get a group together. Doing the missions and stuff was actually pretty quick.

What i would like to see is them do something that would encourage people to help others with their missions. Maybe, the second time forward doing a mission you get "points" which can be used to purchase gear specific to this system. Although exp/gil is always nice, those rewards from mission in 11 was pretty terrible and didn't really make anyone want to help.

If they did this they would be the first to do it since i don't know of any MMO that actually gives you a benefit for replaying content you already did.

Ok so we get 8 character slots, perhaps the game is designed to have alts. I feel like I was rated down because I mentioned WoW. Sorry guys, there are other successful MMOs out there.

Oh and I played FFXI from PC launch ( the blue and white box) to 2010, so suck my balls and them some. Seriously, get over it.

The First Rule of Karma Club is...

...you do not talk about Karma Club.

The Second Rule of Karma Club is...

...you DO NOT talk about Karma Club!

The Third Rule of Karma Club is...

...if you are being relentlessly down-rated for what you said, it's often better to walk away and stop posting about it, or you risk making it worse for yourself.

I've broken all these rules, but, it goes so much better when I don't. Smiley: lol

OP - I think a good summary would be, more alt friendly than XI and less alt friendly than WoW, GW2, (insert other western MMO here), etc...

Don't feel bad, I got rated down also simply for answering your question. Some people just see things they don't agree with and rather than respond like an adult, they just spam that rate-down button. Hence why I'm an advocate of just removing the rate down button altogether. It gets abused by people who are too afraid to even post their own thoughts on something. (let's see how quickly this can get defaulted Smiley: lol)

Rate-down button has its use. I can filter out posts I find useless/uncontributing/insulting.

But as with every system, it has its faults.

FFXIV can be alt-friendly, I suppose. But when the advantages are placed on those who do play a multitude of different characters is when I'll start to complain. I like to do everything on my character, and that's one aspect of the Final Fantasy MMOs I would not like to go away.

I think having to do everything multiple times in XIV will be not that bad. In XI just the travel aspect alone was a time sink and if you're creating an alt you'll have the gil to port where ever you want at will. Plus Duty Finder will help you with any group oriented/dungeon quests. The most involved thing I can think of was the Grand Company quests (assuming you're not bothering to level/unlock jobs you plan to use on the alt) and the GC quests weren't as involved as half the things you *needed* in XI. Don't have to wait multiple time periods to feed a chocobo either...

On a loosely related note, poor chocobo companions. There's going to be a lot of dead chocobos.

And on a completely unrelated note, but because I find it funny.

I don't see anything wrong with doing things over again. After maxing out everything I was interested in on my main character, I started a second one on a separate account to relive the nostalgia and try things out from a different perspective. I'd appreciate if achievements were shared, but mission completion? Nah.

I don't see them gating content in the way they did with Sea for example, so it's not going to be the problem it once was. they learned their lesson with CoP after looking at the numbers of people who actually completed it and the percentage was very low. Making content that no one could complete didn't really help their bottom line.

The rating system is a fun tool but I wouldn't take it too seriously either. I was a higher rank at some point but I joined during the early days of 1.0 and I was very vocal about my disappointment with the game, and the majority of my posts got defaulted into oblivion because certain people thought I was being too negative. Funny how things turn out...
