Question for European playersFollow

I won access to the original ffxiv alpha tests on these forums many moons ago, and christ ffxiv was a stunningly beautiful game -- but my big turn off during that time was the delay I experienced as a European player, it made the whole experience sadly jarring and offputting for me.

I had heard that this was also the case when ffxiv came to retail, I am now getting that ff itch once more though and would love to know other european players opinions on the delay present in the game and if it is worth diving back into the rabbithole. :O

Thankyou all who read this, here's hoping FFXIV:aRR kicks ***. :D

This will be fixed now by joining a European server so it's absolutely worth jumping back into the game.

I'll probably be on the Moogle server if you want to hit me up some time. Smiley: smile

Part way into 1.0's life when they consolidated and renamed servers, one called Ragnarok was suggested as an EU server. There was still a fair population of worldly players but I did find more people in my timezone than I did before the consolidation.

Hopefully in 2.0 we'll see a server not only nominated as EU, but physically located somewhere in the EU also. Thats the plan, anyway!

There will be not 1 but 4 EU servers. Since they are labeled EU i want to believe they will also be somewhere in the EU. As for the legacy worlds all the NA worlds are also EU. So i believe we are not gonna have any problem.

A recent post on the official forums suggests the EU servers are based in NA. /sigh

Yup, here ya go.
Quote:

We will have one data center that houses the North America/Europe servers. In the future, we may create additional data centers based on a variety of factors, but currently we have set up one to house the servers created for the NA/EU territories.

Source.

More info also came out about servers today, from Yoshi-P.

Most distressing part, for me at least, is:

Of course, there are still players who will be forced to change servers, and I deeply apologize for any stress this causes. We will do everything we can to ensure all players are informed of these changes and facilitate communication between players both in game and on the forums, so that players can maintain their already established communities.

They keep referring to non-JP data centres as "NA/EU" which is worrying as an EU player. As previously mentioned, an NA server is only slightly better than a JP one and if it is on the west coast, potentially even worse!

Would love to see clarification if "NA/EU" means located in both NA and EU, or if it means NA location but nominated as the designated EU server in the way Ragnarok was in 1.0

It sounds like this data center IS for both NA and EU and it's speculated to be somewhere in Montreal.

Which is "fine" for the US... not much different from being in Japan as far as the EU is concerned though.

We'll have to see. This is not the first time SE has failed to notice a distinction between North America and Europe. Could just be an experiment though in beta 3 to see how much difference it makes. It's possible they'll open up other data centers if they need to.

Seriously i am located in the south east side of europe. Having data center all the way to America is well..really bad.

The datacenter is one cluster, not two. And from what I've seen around the web, it's in Montreal.

Where in the SE if I may ask? I am also in the SE, and pings to Canadian ISP's such as Rogers (a dominant ISP in Canada afaik) leave a lot to be desired, since a ping of 170-180 in command prompt can be translated to 200+ in a game.

I don't really like the decision they made. Setting up even a small datacenter in London would be much, much, much better.

:)

Mikros pou einai o kosmos, then.

Greece here as well. Sadly, even with ISP's which are remotely competent in regards to latency abroad (say, OTE or Forthnet), Canada is a long way from here, so we should expect ~200 ms with that decision of SE. Admittedly, UK or France will be in a better shape, but it takes some 60-90 ms to reach UK from here...

We'll see.

Yea true that. I wonder though. Since i am in beta in phase 2 i didn't have much problems connection wise. I was within normal range. I do not know where they had their servers though i believe that would be in Japan at that time. Nevertheless i hope we won't have large problems; i will test them more in phase 3.

(ellina edo den perimena na do ;) )

Really, you did not have problems in phase 2? Awesome! They had Japan-only servers in phase 2, so you must had ping of 300++ actually. If that's the case, then we won't have any problems with 180 or 200 ms in Canada.

Anyway, we'll know more in about a week.

Yea, i'll keep a close eye when phase 3 starts but i didn't have problems as far as i remember. I did a couple of runs in the first dungeon as a healer and i didn't lag.

Now that i remember i had a friend that came to me from America and he was playing WoW in an American server from where i am and he didn't have issues.
