I've been a tester since early alpha. I'd like to make a thread similar to the one Wint made about a month ago.

If you have any questions about beta content or my opinion about what I've tested, feel free to ask. I can also make comparisons to other games if you'd like. I'll try to remain as unbiased as possible.

I guess I'll fire with a controversial question first. I've heard lots of rumors that the combat system mimics that of WoW in a lot of ways. Could you go into a bit of detail on this? I realize it's being updated for the next beta, but I'm just curious how similar you find it, and if you think it has enough flexibility and unique elements to stand out.

Also, how was the pace of leveling of DoW/DoM as compared to crafting and gathering? In 1.0, it was so much slower to level crafts and gatherers, is it somewhat more balanced now?

NDA is not gone yet. A few more days! PM me a link that the NDA is gone, though, and I will unlock this.

While the combat is similar to Warcraft, you'll notice that it's not as involved. As of phase 2, weapon skills did not have independent Cooldowns, so without combos, "smash 1-1-1-1-1 to win" would have been the only strategy. Currently, the pace of combat feels nice; faster than xi, slower than wow. Latency issues that were present up to 1.23 seem to have improved greatly, and I assume will only get better when regional servers go live.

One of the bigger issues I've had with combat has been diminishing returns on debuffs. DRs are so significant, that abilities that inflict debuffs are generally rendered useless after a single use.

I'll admit that I've yet to check out doh/dol classes, but the addition of crafting logs has expedited crafting significantly. Nearly all of the guesswork has been eliminated from crafting and gathering, so I personally feel like that's a good thing. It remains to be seen whether or not raid-quality recipes will be available to keep crafting viable through endgame, but it would be a nice addition.

I really enjoyed Botany and Leathercrafting, it makes crafting and gathering fun. The interface is nice. I'm REALLY excited to try Fishing on Friday if it's available (I haven't heard either way).

Ya, the combat at early stages in the game is pretty straight forward and bland. It picks up though as you level and start doing group events.

Question:
1) Materia? What the heck is that?
2) I heard our weapons or gear breaks, true? Why? And do we know when its going to break?
3) Does our chocobo die? or get eaten? Do we have to go through a major process to obtain and maintain it?
3) Are there auction houses like in ff11?
4) Housing, Do we have Mog rooms in each city?
5) Are there Moogles out in the wild that we can access our stuff in storage? Is there storage other than the 25 items in our pack?

That's it for now. Cheers!

Yeah they don't work for me at work, our proxy doesn't like their jacked up login system. I did verify on my MacBook Air though. Hooray for public wifi!

My recommendation is to start out your first "handed to you" class - level 1-10 - as conjurer, as the other melee classes will level up via levequests a lot easier. You can't switch classes til you bring the first one to level 10 anyway.

It's pretty monotonous up until you can start doing TamTara Deepcroft, then you start getting a feel for what your role in a group will be. Then as you get more abilities that can be added to combos it becomes more interesting.

I'm not in the beta, but I can answer most of these since it's public information.

1) Materia is something that gets melded onto gear (think gem system from WoW, but way more complex). You get materia by fighting battles while wearing certain equipment. It gains a spiritbond, when that reaches 100%, you can turn it into materia. There are various grades, and you can meld multiple materia onto certain gear. That's the very basic jist.

2) Gear degrades when used, or more severely when you die. You will be able to see the % it's at, and can repair it yourself or go to an NPC for repairs. As far as I've heard, it doesn't break. It can reach 0, but is still repairable.

3) Since it's a companion it can die, but I'm pretty sure outside of battle you can just resummon it, similar to how companions work in swtor.

4) You can purchase housing in any city (don't think it's available yet though). For now, I think it's limited to one house per person.

5) You will have retainers to hold your excess stuff. Also, I think initial storage is larger than 25... not positive on that. No idea if there are moogles out in the wild, I'm guessing no, at least not for storage purposes, but possibly for mail.

Last I remember from last week it was stated character inventory was 100 slots, and your retainer could hold up to 175. I could be wrong but I know they were going to reduce player inventory from 200 to 100 at the very least.

That will probably change with the new armory system that we saw in the Live Letter VII.

We'll have more information Friday I guess.

1. Materia has not been implemented for beta. It's much similar to gear enchantment in other games, except you can stack materia an indefinite number of times. However, after the first meld, odds of success diminish greatly.

2. All gear has durability; tooltips will give you the current durability of a given piece. Broken gear will appear as a debuff. Yes, it can be repaired. This is your new penalty; think of it as XP loss in xi.

3. This content was not available to test, but I'll get back to you when I know more about it. "Please look forward to it!"

4. Gridania was the only city available, so that's where we had an Inn room. Inn rooms will apparently be the placeholder until your character can buy a personal home.

5. There's no remote storage yet as far as I could tell, but there were summoning bells that allowed you to call your retainer. Also, default pack size is 100 spaces.

Hopefully the info was useful.

It wasn't available to test but this WAS covered in one of the live letters.

Chocobo companions die is they run out of HP, just like everything else. But you can just summon another one.

My first two cents of today.

By far, the most controversial aspect of FFXIV has been the battle system, which feels like a departure from the direction of 1.x. So far, many people have criticized the battle system for being overly simplified and/or illogical, in that certain strong abilities are available so early on, that there's little reason to use any subsequently gained abilities. The result is many players end up spamming the same thing over and over for maximum efficiency.

However, the development team has implemented numerous changes to the battle system for Phase 3 of the beta, including adjusting and reordering the acquisition of abilities, among other things. It seems they've taken feedback from the players to heart. I expect the battle system we see this weekend to be much more thoughtful in its execution.

I really liked the battle system in phase 2 so I'm hoping it will be just as good in phase 3.
