Technical Support: Computer crashes on Character SelectFollow

#1 Jun 15 2013 at 8:19 PM Rating: Decent
So, nearly every time I enter the character select/creator in the Beta for XIV my computer crashes. If I'm fast enough I can sometimes select a character and get into the game and from that point it runs almost perfectly,I inevitably get disconnected from the server, at which point the computer will crash almost immediately upon return to the character select screen.

I have updated my video card drivers as well as directx

I don't receive any error messages. I will be in character select and the screen will just go black and the computer will repeat the last note played in the song.

When reinstalled your drivers+directX did you wipe them completely and the reinstall?

That can often cause critical errors with conflicting code.

I suggest driver sweeper.

I always do clean installs for that reason. I also play Guild Wars 2 and never have an issue with it. But a buddy suggested sending my video card back to the manufacturer. I'm hoping that isn't the only solution to this issue.

I really appreciate your help, btw. Even if we can't find a fix I'm thankful for your replies. Very greatful.

You can always download the debugging tool for Windows 7 to read the dump files. Should tell you what caused the crash. If you google it, you can find step by step instructions on how to do it. Since you can't just straight up read the files.

No worries.

As much as I hate to say it, I'd say contact SE before you look into RMA'ing the card. I'm not convinced it's a GPu problem anyways. Sounds like some fatal RAM dump..

But, if you contact a SE techy, they might be able to find a way to generate an error. Look through your My Documents/SE and wherever you installed it, most games have a .dat (?) File or similar that logs an error code when the game crashes. I'm not near my PC or I'd go find it (if it's there)

Good luck!

I've posted on their forum with no reply. This place has been more helpful. I'll see if I can contact SE again through a different method. Thanks again!
