Apparently there's a problem with a new patch for the PS3. Posting this here for the benefit of those with a PS3 so as to save some headaches.

http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Support/Problem-after-update-to-4-45/td-p/40712247

Apparently the new patch is actually bricking some people's PS3s.

So if you get a prompt to DL patch 4.45 you might not want to let your PS3 do the upgrade.

Just did this update. Currently no problems. Not using a Slim model if that says anything. Noticed the first comment said Slim as well as a few other times after that, so maybe...

EDIT: Seeing this relate to a lot, and I mean a lot of SLIM owners, as well as a few of the backwards compatible models.

First appearances seem to indicate that it's hitting people who've upgraded their HDD's.

I just finished updating the Launch day PS3 and the Slim minutes before seeing the warning hitting Polygon/Kotaku, both PS3s had no issues running afterward.

Good luck folks!

From what I'm seeing it is only the people who have a 500GB HD or larger... and I have a 500GB HD Smiley: cry

Edit: Also hitting people with the Slims as well as the older Fatties

Funny this should happen right after Sony goes through bashing Microsoft for their DRM. I really hope Sony learns it's lesson soon before they lose more customers.

SE was the reason I bought my first playstation, and to be honest, SE is the only reason I still have a Playstation (3)... Other than Tomb Raider I haven't bought a game for the PS3 in nearly 2 years. Yeah, my wife had to get Skyrim, and Assassin's Creed, but she now uses it more than I do... And even she is getting tired of their crap.

If it wasn't for their statements at E3, and the fact that 14 was going to the PS4, I had zero interest in them, and with this... Yeah, still don't trust a company that keeps punishing their customers because they don't like how people use the stuff they sell. Yeah, piracy is a problem. Deal with it without constantly causing me grief.

I concur, I turned on my ps3 and there was no message to update. I'm watching things on my usb, not going to try to enter the game.

I wonder if you could pull the hard drive and just reformat it. I know you'd lose all the data and start over, but at least your PS3 would be running again.

How do we get beta keys? I entered my FFXIII PS3 beta code on my square enix account, but never received anything other than a PC beta invite/code. How can I test on Ps3?

So per Sony: We don't know what happened, when it will be fixed, nor will you be able to use your PS3 until we fix it. Infuriating

I'm so glad I didn't dl the patch.

It certainly won't live as long as the PS2 but I'd say it might be a little too early to start talking the demise of the PS3.

i more so ment i can see the company putting viral stuff out just to make some of us lose our beloved ps3 's so that having to get a NEW ps4 at release cause your not just going to get a new ps3 with a new consol right next to release...

I am 100% sure they started doing this for the 60GB PS3 because they wanted to take the backwards compatible models off the market. There is no reason they can't make a system breaking bug and say its something else. Then they will say, we can fix it for X dollars or we can credit you X dollars toward a new system.

Evil!

Edit: Added:

My problem is, what about the collectors? I have games on Hard Disc that I want to play when I'm 60... that's 30years from now. If they break my system, how will I go retro? I love playing PS1 games, N64, Dreamcast games. You can't beat some of those, I'm looking at you Banjo-Kazooie. If the systems break how will I get my weekly dose of nostalgia?

PC emulators. That's probably you're best bet unfortunately. Also, it seems like the newer the system, the less time before it dies. I had a working nintendo for 20 years. I had a working super nintendo for about 12. My xbox 360 lasted me about 5... it's like they are building them to break quickly now so you have to keep upgrading. Smiley: oyvey
