Dark Knight: Preliminary Job speculation.Follow

Hi all,
Since FFXI I've favoured the Dark knight class. It isn't present in FFXIV but the developers have mentioned they're considering it for release at a later time.

Give the DRK is an 'advanced' job class, what class do you think I should level in anticipation of the DRK's possible release? This would be to ensure that when the class is released I can go directly and do the job advancement quest without having to level the job that is a prerequisite of the DRK (Since I'll have it leveled in anticipation).

Obviously this is all some speculation, but any advice and educated guesses could help inform my efforts...

A lot of people say Gladiator because of Yoshi's hinting towards it being one potential path. Personally I feel Marauder would be better suited.

In the end I don't think you should be playing according to a potential speculative release. We could very well see a multitude of jobs by the time it comes around.

Just play what you find interesting now.

I'd lean towards Marauder, since they wield two-handed weapons, and they advance to Warrior which was prerequisite for DRK in FFXI.

Then again, Gladiator develops to Paladin, which is what Cecil became after being a Dark Knight in FFIV. However, they're a one-handed weapon class, and the DRK is most definitely a two-handed wielder.

More opinions appreciated.

Well I fully believe that if they plan on adding as many classes that are in 11 over time, I think they will have many new basic ones.

2hand sword
duel wield
gun
gunsword
fish
katana(possibly just a 2hand sword)
rapier(possibly just a 1hand sword
1hand hammer
2hand hammer

I agree with this. With all the HP absorbing abilities MRD has, I think it could be a good fit.

If DRK does branch from GLA, I hope they get a FFX-2 style Darkness ability to replace Flash. I also hope that they prevent DRK from wearing heavy armor. Instead, I think they should have access to the same types of equipment as LNC/DRG.

I would expect some other new base class that they can use to attach two jobs to it. If you're looking at expanding gameplay, you really can't do it by expanding it to a class that a large portion of the player base would already have leveled to 50. As a designer, you're better off building another base class and having the player play through the existing content again.

This would also work well, because they could make a red-mage / DRK hybrid base class in this manner. This would allow them a better mix of hp/mp to support casting spells inbetween weapon strikes.

Assuming no additional classes added, I would simply level both mrd and gld to 30, then every other potential prerequisite job to 15. It'll likely be a long time until drk is patched in, so you will have ample time to cover all your bases.

While I agree that Marauder makes the most sense as a potential for DRK in FFXIV, WAR was certainly not a prerequisite for DRK in FFXI. All you needed was a lvl 30 job, and you could unlock it. Of course, WAR as a subjob helped for the STR/berserk boost... but it wasn't mandatory.

As much as it would be possible for DRK to be a subset of MRD, I think there's another possibility.

I think it would be possible for a Greatsword-using class to be set up (who knows what we'd call it though) that can have branch jobs of Dark Knight and Rune Fencer (see FFXI), one specializiing on the melee portion (DRK) and one focusing on the magical portion.

I don't think it's dependent as much on weapon type as it would have been in FFXI. FFXIV doesn't skill up weapons anyway, so it's not like you would be gimped on two handed if you used sword and shield to 50 with GLA and then DRK.

Is there no THF class?

Currently there is no THF class.

To your comment on weapon dependency, since the weapon picks the job (armory system and all that), it's not that the class picks a weapon but that the weapon picks a class. More to the point, GLA still has a skill set less built for straight up DD work than for building hate/dissipating damage, which would fit with a traditional DRK role poorly.

You could get the quest to unlock DRK with any lvl 30 job but you needed WAR to complete it since only WAR could use the crappy greatsword. I think that's what he meant.

Then I'm not really following the point of the discussion since a DRK would likely use a scythe or great sword anyway. THM uses staff, MAR uses great axe, GLA uses sword/shield.....weapon wise, there's not really a tie to DRK anywhere.

Ability wise, MAR's pretty much the obvious choice but I guess it depends on what abilities DRK would have anyway.

A couple things.

Dark Knights using single-handed swords is nothing new in the Final Fantasy-verse, and we know ARR is trying to pay a lot of homages to it. Cecil, who most people probably know as one of the most famous DRKs in the series, used a one-handed sword and shield as well. Just because Final Fantasy XI ushered in the idea of the scythe-wielding DRK doesn't mean it has to continue to be that way.

Additionally, consider that a class using multiple weapons is already ongoing in ARR, and was a thing back in 1.0 as well. Gladiators use both daggers and swords. Conjurers and Thaumaturges respectively have the options to either go two-handed staff, or to use a one-handed wand (with a shield in the offhand).

In other words, it stands to reason they could simply introduce Great Swords as a different type of weapon for GLDs or Marauders to use, and it wouldn't really be all too jarring.

I could see DRK stemming from GLA. CNJ and THM have both two handed staves and one handed wands available to them. The description on staves just says 2H CNJ or THM arm. Though I'm not sure 2 handed weapons are even necessary.

I'm actually more interested in how DRK would set itself apart from other DPS/DD jobs. Would it simply be several HP for Damage swap skills or something more complex. I could even see them tanking in some fashion if Drain skills are the focus.

I might be wrong here, but I think scythe was a pretty new thing to Dark Knights FF-wise in FFXI. As others have said, Cecil used a sword and shield in FFIV, the dark knight job in FFT uses a sword and shield (depending on how you want to look at that this came after FFXI, but it was largely based on the existing knight structure). I can't remember other dark knight implementations right now, at least in a final fantasy setting.

What job abilities do you think DRK will have? Im hopin hes a Damage Dealer/ Debuff type job, maybe have a Bio spell, i dont know if that spell is already in game, but would be cool, stuff along the lines of that.

The Final Fantasy Wiki covers all the various appearances of DRK. For scythes, this page shows the games in which they are available.
