Hello all.

Been looking through all the videos of FFXIV recently and notice the PS3 screens look alot more "dulled" down compared to the PC version. Obviously the PC will outperform the PS3 in many aspects but I'm worried it's just going to affect how I feel about the game itself. What do you think?
And I know graphics are not everything but it sure helps to create a wonderful game.

In my opinion, if I was using a PS3 over PC, I wouldn't care, I would get used to it. People did the same thing with PC vs PS2 for FFXI...(I know this because I played on PS2 for the majority of my FFXI career.) It doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the game to most people, as a lot of people did play on PS2. I'm looking forward to how the PS4 will look, though...

I know this will shock people, but I actually think the PS3 version not as good looking as the PC version (There, I said something negative about the game Smiley: tongue).

I played both versions in the last beta phase, and the PS3 version was OK, but if you have a choice between the two, I would say go with PC. Not saying the PS3 version is unplayable, it's a good alternative if you're not a PC gamer or you want to kick back on your couch and play (I have spent a lot of time and money on my desk set up so I prefer my desk anyway).

However, when I was playing on the PS3 I was sitting at my desk and had the PS3 hooked up to one of my monitors, so the screen was only about 1.5' away from me, I daresay it probably looks better when the screen isn't so close.

You played the PS3 from your desk through your monitor? That seems a tad silly. Smiley: lol

It's expected it won't look as good... PCs are a lot more suited for optimal settings than a console. But you knew that already. The thing is the PS3 is better if you already own a PS3 and don't want to buy a new computer/upgrade your computer, the game is still available to you.

Why? it's pretty awesome to be able to play while I'm working Smiley: tongue

I'm not knocking PS3 players at all, but if I had a choice between the two it would be PC hands down.

I have a ps3 and played it. I just simply can't justify getting a pc to play the game. I don't have that kind of disposable cash.

I was satisfied with what I have. I was thinking of getting a better tv, but so far can't justify all the trouble and expense, since I have 2 pefectly working tv's.

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the PS3 I guess. Considering I'm getting the PS4 now I don't think I'll waste about £600 on a good PC just to play it. I'm guessing the PS4 will run it on max settings.

Buying a PC for one game really is a tough sell. I've always been a combination gamer, I have a fairly updated PC, and a current gen console (the last few generations have been Sony-based). I'll always play a game on a PC for the visual superiority, unless I know I have friends who are playing on the lesser option.

I've built computers for friends and family who were playing a specific game, and for them it ends up thing of the moment. Sometimes 3 months down the line when they burn out or return to consoles, that $1,000 PC goes relatively unused, reduced to a powerful Facebook checker (ZOMG Candy Crush is OP).

So decide where your money is better spent.

Before I played in beta phase 3, I was a bit nervous about the same things. When images of the PC and PS3 versions are shown side by side like in the Tour of Eorzea trailers, it does make the PS3 version seem a bit unpolished. However, once you get in and start playing, the PS3 version looks just fine.

The most important thing seems to be adjusting your TV settings. I played the Beta on two different TVs and the settings ended up being pretty different. I think the game even prompts you to adjust your TV settings before the opening trailer. Definitely worth playing around with it.

My only concern is that, in a few years, having the game on PS3 won't end up being a handicap. I still believe that PS2 limitations really held FFXI back.

I'm going to play on PS3, but I've seen what it looks like on PC, and it clearly looks better. It doesn't mean it doesn't look good on PS3 however. The game is still beautiful and (in my opinion) more importantly it runs very smoothly with no slowdown no matter what's going on around you.

I played it on both and the PS3 (at least on a 46" LCD TV through HDMI hook ups) looked as good as it did on my PC (32" HD using HDMI) when I had the settings set in the mid-range. Now when I raised the PC setting to high, there was a noticable differance, but before that there really wasn't any with the exception of the number of PCs and NPCs that were visible on the screen at one time... and that was mainly an issue during FATEs. As to the people who keep harping on the PS3 holding the PC back, I call BS. The PS3 runs the game at mid-range. If anything is "holding the game back" it is the low end PCs and if it gets the game a larger player base then that isn't a bad thing.

Another thing to make note of is that if you have an option to turn off overscan, be sure to do so. Otherwise, you're going to have to spend a whole lot of time tweaking your user interface to make sure that everything fits on the screen.

I played on the PS3 during phase 3 and felt the graphics were decent enough. So long as you sit further away than Wint, you probably won't find too much to complain about. As princessary said, the biggest issue seems to be the limited number of characters that can appear onscreen. Then again, you might find that to be a good thing. After dealing with Jeuno in FFXI, I can see that limitation being handy.

I liked the graphics, but I am a fairly easy man to please. This comment comes from a person who would rather play SNES and PSX games than most high profile games nowadays.

The only time that the graphics bugged me is when there was a lalafell parade on Ultros during phase 3. I could only see like 10 lalas at a time, compared to the PC users being able to see a never ending line of lalas. Other than that , I have had no problems. I really have no choice as I don't have a PC, so maybe I am just forcing myself into liking it, but I doubt it. Again, I am a pretty easy man to please.

The PS4 will probably run it a bit higher than the PS3, but I don't think it will run it on maximum settings still. If it does, you will probably lag quite a bit. If you want the maximum settings with no lag, you need to invest into a computer.

PS3 is perfectly fine for playing the game, if you can't do the gamer PC right now just play on the PS3 and maybe some time later you can get a pc and run it.

I somewhat agree in that I feel that FFXI being on PS2 at all is what was holding it back. When you develop solely for PC you can expect people to upgrade and update over time; something you can't do when you back yourself into the console corner. I'm still a bit curious as to the reason SE decided so shortly after the announcement that FFXI had overtaken FFVII as the most lucrative FF game in the history of the franchise; why would you split your MMO player base....

There is a huge difference in graphics quality between PS3 and a good PC running on max.

I played for around 8 hours on each of PS3 and PC during the last beta. My PC was running at 1920x1080, max settings and the game looks amazing, textures are great (except the grass), details are awesome, colours are vibrant. The PS3 by comparison lacks detail, clarity and definition (though I was playing on a 42 inch TV), and suffers stutter and slow down on frame rates in the town - my PC showed virtually no slow down.

The colours on PS3 look bland also and not as many player characters load up in towns.

In fact, there was such a difference that I considered cancelling my PS3 pre-order (I already have on PC obviously) and waiting for PS4 release.

I will still get the game but all I will be doing on my PS3 is gathering and crafting when I want to just sit on the lounge and play.

I love this game, and I don't understand the negative comments about the graphics (which on PC are fantastic but you wouldnt think it reading the official forums) but I question the wisdom of releasing on PS3 with PS4 so imminent. The PS3 just does not cut it.

I suppose if you are used to only playing on PS3, you wont know any difference but for those moving back and forth, the difference is huge.

Yoshi told me in my interview with him that they intended to continually revamp the game's graphics to make sure it's always a competitor with other PC games. I took that to mean that there won't be any PS# limitations for ARR.

Then we can also take that to mean the PS3 will be left in the dust in terms of graphics? Gameplay rules supreme for me, but there are a lot of people out there who this might bother. Personally, I'd be happy if they decided not to tie PC down to the constraints of PS3 as they did in FFXI. I could think of more than a few reasons XI isn't as popular as it once was, but this one is toward the top of the list.

I take it to mean they will do the best they can with the PS3 hardware. If you're going to play on the PS3 I should think you are already making compromises and if you want the best graphics then PC should be your platform of choice.

As a PS3 only player I agree completely. It's just so much easier for me to justify the expense to buy a console every 6+ years than upgrading a PC all the time. I'm 99% sure I'll be picking up a PS 4. That will be my graphics/ram/storage upgrade for the '10s decade lol

I feel pretty much the same way. I can't see myself buying a new computer in order to play just one game. When my laptop finally dies, I'll grab one capable of running it. Until then, a console will have to do. As such, I'm fine with PC users having certain advantages over me.

Very true. You pay for what you get.

I'm relatively new to PC gaming, and I don't regret it one bit. Once you get the PC, as long as you care for it, and upgrade it every now and then, it will stay as a nice investment.

I have to agree with this assessment for the PS3 version. Personally I thought the game ran better than expected. I noticed very little if any lag during my testing. Sure if you compare FFXIV to the PC version, you'll notice a difference. That's to be expected though. The PS3 version runs well though and the only legitimate issue that bothered me was the load times for zoning. The texture pop up, limited draw distance, and 720P resolution are no different than any other PS3 game. Unlike FFXI on the PS2, FFXIV runs well for the most part. The PS4 version will run 14 even better. Now the reason why PS3 limitations don't really doesn't matter is because any graphical upgrades for the game will only apply to the PC and the PS4 port. SE built the game from the ground up for the PC so improving the graphics shouldn't be an issue. Most people will upgrade with the PS4 version anyways which should easily run this game at a full 1080P and max frame rate.

I played FFXI on the PS2 and PS3 (both original release). I love good graphics, but because I never saw PC version on a "built for gaming" system.. I didn't know the difference... And I don't really care.

We will be playing on the PS3's (32" and 55" screens 6' from the comfort of our couch) and we played in Beta and found the graphics fine. Ya, sometimes people 20' from you don't pop up right away). I'm used to that from XI though, and so it doesn't even phase my experience. PC gamers are free to feel all "Elitist". I don't have the funds to make a PC just for one game.

There are 2 different Clients and so PC will get all the upgrades they want and PS3 will get what they can and it will be fine. I'm sure Yoshi P has considered all this already. Compared the data, looked at where things went wrong with the PS2 etc.

They wouldn't release it if it wasn't going to be up to snuff of today's console gaming standards.

So enjoy your PC's if you have them. I'll enjoy the fact they are releasing XIV for the PS3 (wasn't there in 1.0 anyways) and enjoy this game as much as I possibly can. Which will be as much or even more than some of the PC players. The game still looks incredible either way.

Well keep in mind, there's a lot more that a computer's good for than just playing FFXIV. A good computer is indeed a solid investment.

There are quite a few games out there that are PC-only. There aren't many games on consoles that don't eventually work their way to a PC port. (Especially Playstation games via Steam.)

That wasn't the precedence set with FFXI which was the reason for the concern. PC were generally limited to the capability of PS2 because that's how they wanted it. Good to know that went out the window though.

There is a major difference between buying a computer to do your normal tasks and paying extra to make it play games at the highest frame rates. If you take into consideration a console and average computer cost, the costs are about the same as a good rig(in my opinion). The average person doesn't need a $500 GPU or 32GM of RAM or SSD. Sure you can cut corners to save some money here and there, but that's an entirely different debate.

I agree that the PC platform does have some exclusives, but I'd argue that Sony has far more. Most of the PC exclusives are on the tablets anyway in some form or another. Diablo 3 is proof anything is possible on console. I never though that game would come to consoles. Elder Scrolls Online was another huge shock.

Personally I think everyone should have a PC and a console to be covered. With the advent of cloud gaming(streaming) on the horizon ready to take off, the power of the PC is about to lose a lot of steam, no pun intended. Games will stream on smart devices instead of requiring mega powerful hardware to run them. A good computer is a solid investment for sure, but a good computer doesn't have to be a gaming rig.

The "PS limitation" issue was never really related to graphics. It was related to features/coding that was impossible to implement in PS.

eg. If I remember correctly, the reason inventory slots in FFXI couldn't be expanded further was because of PS2 limitations.

This is what I'm concerned about when it comes to FFXIV and PS3 limitations. Certain potential features down the road may not be able to be implemented.

The graphics I'm not worried about one bit. They can improve graphics for the PC version while not doing anything with the PS3 version.

I'll have it for both the pc and ps3. I played the P3 beta on ps3 and the graphics were good enough for me. Found a pc that was a huge upgrade over what I had for only $530 (no monitor included--I already have one). I'm sure the pc version beats the ps3 in terms of graphics, but I had a lot of fun on the ps3 version during P3. PS3 version also allows me to take the game out of town with me.

I really don't think it will be a big difference in the two, and nothing really to speculate on the matter to even really complain on the situation. I played FFXI 7-8 years and had a lot of fun w/ the game, the graphics weren't that bad but the gameplay was pretty cool. Going from FFXI to FFXIV will be a very fun step, comparing on game play and the much upgraded graphics. I wouldn't say the PS3 will slow the game down and will keep to par w/ the PC's specs towards the game. PS3 has great graphics as it is but the PS4 if you watch some trailers on games for it almost looks to be real and will probably be just as good as the PC and cheaper.

And there is your problem right there, compair the 2 on the mid-range settings.

I had zero slowdown and stuttering on my PS3, the problem is most likely your connection. BTW, I'm wireless.

HallieXIV wrote:

The colours on PS3 look bland also and not as many player characters load up in towns.

Have you thought about adjusting your TV settings to get the most out of your colors and contrast?

HallieXIV wrote:

In fact, there was such a difference that I considered cancelling my PS3 pre-order (I already have on PC obviously) and waiting for PS4 release.

As I have stated before, the PS3version is only different from running the game on a mid-range PC in the fact that it limits the number of characters on the screen at one time. Edit: And the load times are a little longer beween zones, forgot to add that.

HallieXIV wrote:

I will still get the game but all I will be doing on my PS3 is gathering and crafting when I want to just sit on the lounge and play.

Eh, play however you wish, that is the beauty of options.

HallieXIV wrote:

I love this game, and I don't understand the negative comments about the graphics (which on PC are fantastic but you wouldnt think it reading the official forums) but I question the wisdom of releasing on PS3 with PS4 so imminent. The PS3 just does not cut it.

Ummmmm, A larger player base, therefor more subscribers?

HallieXIV wrote:

I suppose if you are used to only playing on PS3, you wont know any difference but for those moving back and forth, the difference is huge.

I play on both and the graphics really aren't that differance if I want to optimize my PC to the fullest of its capabilities. In that case, what differance there is is negligible.

Sounds like me. I have my Xbox routing video to my computer monitor and routing sound to my logitech surround computer speaker system. Its really nice because I can sit at my desk and play a game on Xbox, and still run my PC with a different monitor to display web pages and such. I simply clone the desktop with my second monitor, then switch my primary display from the DVI port of my video card to the HDMI port that my Xbox is plugged into and away I go. Makes for a prettu epic Xbox experience.

The "PS limitation" issue was never really related to graphics. It was related to features/coding that was impossible to implement in PS.

eg. If I remember correctly, the reason inventory slots in FFXI couldn't be expanded further was because of PS2 limitations.

They could and they were. We were told that it wasn't possible, then they turned around and did it.

The graphics I'm not worried about one bit. They can improve graphics for the PC version while not doing anything with the PS3 version.

Fact is they could have and still can improve the graphics of FFXI. Some sort of UI update has been announced and even shown off a bit IIRC.
Disclaimer: The following is partial speculation.

There has always been a sentiment that SE favors their JP fanbase, this we've known for quite some time. I would go so far as to say, PC wasn't updated because JP players are the bulk of the console users for FFXI.

Either way, they could have done the same with FFXI but didn't. Who knows \Smiley: frown/

Judging off the PS3 sales, SE should of just made a PS3 version of FFXI so they could of updated the graphics for everyone. This version they had on the PS3(60GB if I recall) was actually the PS2 version. Considering that the Xbox 360 was very niche in japan, it just made sense to use the PS3 to ween them off the PS2 version. The good news is that FFXI has seen some graphics improvements in recent years for the PC version. I also see the PS4 version of FFXIV being ported over from the PC version, not the PS3, because the PS4 has a normal PC form factor. I truly believe The PS4 version of FFXIV will be good enough to compete with the PC version for most people. I say most people because not everyone is maxing out the benchmark.

They did kind of start separating PC and PS2, they did the UI overhaul where they updated the font and icons but it was for PC and Xbox only.

I have played on both and my Girlfriend plays on the ps3.. I play on the pc for now. The pc on mid settings is better than the ps3. Load times are longer on the ps3.. But it runs pretty smooth though. The interface is a little crude. But I actually think the os3 graphics are better than I thought they would be and are as good as any other ps3 game. If you have not played on a computer it should not really bother you, the game looks good they just seemed to have blurred it some. Another annoying thing is people zone in way latter on the ps3 version, I had people running by me and would not zone in till they past me. I think this will be fixed.. Remember things will be improved as time goes on and they continue to optimize the game.

We do have two Ps4 on order and will switch to that. The ps4 spec should allow it to keep up with a computer on the highest settings. Consoles always keep up with a pc on on release, They don't even have to match specs since they are mainly gaming machines and have a stripped down operating system and use less resources.

FFXI problem with the ps2 was hard drive space. They had used up the space which made them recycle stuff over and over and over and over.

Correct the ps3 was very hard to program for. The ps4 should not be and was a very smart move making more like a pc just like Microsoft did. Makes it easier and cheaper for developers to port games.

My question is when will the ps4 game launch? They have not even gave a time line that I have seen.

You talking about FFXIV for the ps4? I hope so but doubt it.. It was just announced and I would bet they are pretty much working on getting the game ready for release for the ps3/pc right now. If it were that close you think they would have said because that would put it in release window and those games have been announced already. I hope you are right though and you have more info than I do...

I think Wint is referring to the launch of the PS4. It's expected to come out the first or second week of November. Yoshi P said the PS4 version of FFXIv won't be out for at least a year following the launch. The reason given was that the focus was on the PS3 version right now as it was promised to people since 1.0.

I meant when does FFXIV supposed to launch for the PS4?

You'd be wrong. Very wrong. It's much easier for small companies or individuals to make games for PC than for a console. The Entry Barrier is much lower, and because of it there are far, far more games.

There were likely more PC games released last month than PS3 games released last year.

I saw the PS3 graphics first and thought they were great. Then I saw the PC graphics and thought they were spectacular.

So I guess if greatness isn't enough for you, then you can consider a PC purchase. If you are thinking FFXIV will be your primary hobby, then spectacular might just be worth the money.

There is still an open question of whether the PS3 will support the PC's mouse/keyboard UI and targeting. For those of us that have grown up with MMO's on PC, this alone would tip the balance in favor of PC. I plan to play on BOTH platforms. I'm setting up a 2nd account for my kids to play with me on the PS3 from the living room. So I really, really want the two versions to be equal, at least in terms of character control options.
#51Killua125, Posted: Aug 12 2013 at 11:51 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) For me I just can't see the PS3 version being worth $. Maybe if it was a free PSN download and then you pay a sub to keep it going. But I can't really see a game like that actually being on a box at Gamestop. Too many technical problems. It's very obvious that ARR shouldn't be on the PS3. They should have waited for the PS4.
