Im sure this has been asked and addressed somewhere but I haven't been able to find it so please forgive me... I know that SE said they will no longer be supporting windows XP but will it still be playable with XP if that's all I have? I'm assuming that saying they wont be supporting it doesnt necessarily mean it wont run on XP.

I read that it's not available on XP... but you may be right.

Either way you should probably upgrade to 7 or 8 at some point, I'm sure there's more reasons to upgrade then just FFXIV.

It'll likely run on XP, but the game will not supported on XP systems. Not to mention, it's highly unlikely that you will be able to get updated drivers for XP for all of your hardware.

I have XP and the benchmark response was: LMAO, NO WAY.
It was sad.

Microsoft may be discontinuing support for XP next year, but I'm not upgrading because my program softwares would cost a small fortune to replace.

I got "High" when i ran the benchmark on standard with 1440x900 res and fairly high on high setting at that res (with windows XP) which is why im guessing it will work with XP, i just dont want to buy it and find out i cant even install it, so im hoping someone can come shed some light on the matter.

It's not supported, so you will have to take that risk or wait and hear from others who try it. XP is specifically omitted from the supported operating systems.

With a little searching found the answer you were looking for,
Quote:
[NA] Windows XP Support Information
Thank you for your continued support of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn.

With the announcement that Microsoft(R) will no longer be supporting Windows XP from April 9th, 2014, we regret to inform you that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will no longer be able to guarantee support for Windows XP after the Beta Test Phase 3, which is planned to start early June.

Due to the fact that Microsoft(R) has already completed the support life cycle of this product, we have found that continuing support for this OS is a difficult proposition. We have instead decided to put more focus on support for Windows 8, and we hope everyone will understand.

Although support for Windows XP will no longer be guaranteed after the Beta Test Phase 3, our development team will still build from the existing platform. This does not mean that our users will no longer be able to play using Windows XP, and current users will still be able to play using Windows XP.

We will do our best to have compatibility with our Software Updates from this point forward, but there will be instances where we won't be able to guarantee support due to Windows XP issues.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

It will play on XP but for how long and how well, time will tell.

You might want to consider upgrading to Windows 7 eventually. I can understand why a lot of people didn't go to Vista (because it was garbage), but Windows 7 is definitely an upgrade of XP. I probably won't be upgrading to Windows 8 though, as it looks terrible, and I've heard the same.

Windows 7 is the XP of this generation. It won't be losing support any time soon, either.

Thanks for that, I guess I'll get it at launch, and then just start saving for a new computer or just get a ps3 at some point, though I'd much rather play this game on a PC if i can afford it.

Notice the cycle?

XP (Good) -> Vista (Bad) -> Windows 7 (Good) -> Windows 8 (Bad) -> Windows 9 will be when people mass upgrade next I would imagine.

I'll buy a new computer before I just buy windows 7 for my existing machine. This thing is really old and all I've really upgraded is the video card (currently using a Radeon HD 6670) but my processor is really old, probably one of the oldest quad cores (Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40 GHz) and I think I only have about 2GB of RAM. I'm just astounded that on the benchmark I got "High" performance with 1440x900 res on standard graphics and fairly high with high graphics. I'm sure my framerate wont be that great though with a bunch of people on the screen, it already drops to about 20-30 in heavily congested areas in WoW on standard settings, and this game will definitely be more taxing.

I have indeed noticed that. I was gonna mention that, but didn't think it worth bringing up. I also believe that Windows 9 will be the next logical OS upgrade.

Resolution apparently has a massive impact on the outcome of the benchmark. If you were to run it on 1600x900, or 1920x1080, you'd see quite a large decrease in your score.

1440x900 is the largest resolution available to me, i guess I just have a crappy monitor, but ill worry about that later on down the road, games look fine to me on it now and its a decently big (wide) screen.

Thing is if you wait to buy a new pc, it will come with win 8. Actually, the 8.1 upgrade soon to be released is tolerable. Only problem running win 7 on your machine is that the 64-bit version requires 2 GB memory. If you are thinking of buying a new computer, do it. You could always find an inexpensive copy of 7 on ebay

W8 is just a slightly more efficient W7 with a touch-based Start menu. You could literally ignore all the new parts and and you'd be left with a W7 that uses a little less processor and RAM. How could that possibly be a bad thing?

People aren't referring to Win 8 stability like Vista here Wint, but how unfriendly and complicated it can be for people. The interface simply sucks. That's why they're adding 8.1 with the start button back. On a positive note, Win 8 installs faster than any windows OS I have installed since XP. That was a strange surprise for me.

Only if you're trying to use the metro interface (which I don't). Once you learn the keyboard shortcuts it's a fantastic OS, but yeah, lots of people don't like keyboard shortcuts.

Funny thing is, the chain is even longer.

3.0 (bad) -> 3.1 (good) -> 95 (bad) -> 98 (good) -> ME (what is this i don't even) -> XP (good)...
