Linkshells - Thing of the past?Follow

#1 Aug 24 2013 at 8:22 AM Rating: Excellent
So I'll be honest and admit that I didn't take the time to really read up on the difference between FCs and LSs. I created a shell, have been throwing out invites to people I see more than once during FATEs, but nobody accepts. To invite them, I highlight them and bring up their menu, and hit Invite to Shell (or whatever it says akin to that). Then nothing.

Now, maybe people just don't want to join a shell with someone on day 1, but we can equip multiple pearls now from what I can tell. Are LSs just taboo or useless now?

Thank you in advance for any insight you may have.

It's probably a day one thing. My FC/LS is using both.

Well not to mention that actually joining a Linkshell is incredibly roundabout. Gotta go through way more of a hassle than should be necessary.

What? How so? You just click the invite and hit accept. That's 2 buttons you have to hit. Do you want the game to run on telepathy??

In my days you had to walk to a pearlsack holder. Uphill. In the snow. Then you got killed by a bunny.

You kids and your two clicks!

On my server's boards there's more FC recruitment than LS. In fact there's barely any LS. Everyone seems to have shifted to FC now.

I see LS as a way for friends and allies to communicate between FC. having a LS with exclusively FC members is redundant.

I don't see any reason for people to just blind accept LS invites since there really is no benefit to them to do so.

I'm not sure what these people were thinking when they declined. Were these blind invites? If so, that could be the reason. I see Linkshells in FFXIV as social Linkshells in FFXI. FC are like endgame guilds in FFXI and most people my group included seem to want to move to a FC right now because of the reward system. A linkshell in FFXIV is only a chat channel, nothing else. So I assume that's the reason, but it's just a guess right now.

This. Nobody is gonna accept blind invites from someone they fought in a FATE with.

Are you at least sending them a /tell to tell them about your LS?

Just a heads up, most people don't accept blind invites. Someone did this to me in phase 4 and I declined. I'd prefer a little socialization first before being invited.

With the advent of Free Company chatter, Linkshells do seem a bit vestigial in terms of use, don't they?

I'm sure that there are still some uses for them, of course. Mostly you'll see it in terms of specialty or niche groups that want to get people together but don't want to deal with the seriousness of a Free Company. Case in point, so far on Sargantas I've seen shouts for roleplaying linkshells as well as LGBT linkshells, mainly just as a way to have interaction with others who share your interests.

So, yeah. Linkshells aren't really so much going away as much as they may be more for cliques with similar interests, hobbies, or something else. Maybe you'll see some based off in-game focuses as well, such as shells for people focused on craft or on gathering.

A linkshell is nothing more than a chat channel. I fail to see how it's the end of the world when someone doesn't want to join.

Free Company. Guilds, basically.

Most of us learned this lesson from other MMOs. I'm not saying anything against the OP, but as a general rule, blind invites often lead to headache and/or drama when it comes to social groups in a MMO.

Exactly this. A linkshell is nothing more than a chatroom. It is an entirely social medium.

I didn't say it was a big deal. I did, however, say that as someone who hadn't spent any time really looking at the difference between an FC and a LS, I was curious as to why LS's seem to be more niche where as FC's must be more like the LS's of old. Of course I /tell'd them prior and talked. I don't blindly bug folks :P

That being said, that makes sense. FC's are more like guilds for groups to tool around together, and LS's are nothing more than a, "I like you, join my LS so we can talk with a few buddies".

An LS is for smaller circles of friends, large group activities etc.

The Free Company is the equivalent of the Umbrella corporation ( not THAT Umbrella) encompassing all groups underneath it in some fashion.

500 people chattering away at once like psychotic chocobos would render such a FC chat useless, hence the Linkshells for friends, and Business associates.
