This is Early AccessFollow

Because I'm becoming increasing tired of the first page filling up with complete and utter garbage whining and bickering about this not being Early Access or that things are broken, I thought I'd substantiate the claim that this is, indeed, early access.

This is early access because the official launch date is the 27th, substantiated here and here. To the naysayers that claim that this is launch, I'd like to remind them that, again, launch is the 27th. Today is the 25th. Therefore, those that have the privilege of Early Access because they preordered the game or paid for 3 months during the 1.0 days ARE segregated from the rest of the population. Since it's BEFORE the 27th, this is considered Early Access.

Now, about the issues. EVERY MMO has had issues. EVEN RIFT. Please refer to this post for more details.

Yeah, so...

Some people really need to chill out!

Look, I pretty much planned on doing nothing this weekend except playing FFXIV... just like all y'all. Unfortunately, though, a newly launching MMO had problems (GASP!). So, I couldn't just sit in one place and punch buttons all weekend.

You know what I did instead?

I barbecued... I watched a movie with my wife... we made a rare DQ run and got blizzards... I did a little extra work... did some laundry... played with the cats... talked to some family... shot the breeze with my neighbor... and, amid all of that, still spent plenty of time in FFXIV.

This morning, I saw there was more maintenance coming, so I didn't even try to log in. Instead, I went to the gym, swam for 35 minutes, got a nice cup of coffee and took my time driving back home.

Here's what I didn't do:

I didn't get mad or angry. I didn't pound my keyboard. I didn't write up imaginary class-action lawsuits. I didn't spew ignorant, condescending remarks toward a development team (and company) that dove into red ink just to please us.

It's OK to be bummed about this, but anyone who is seriously angry about this needs to step back. There's no good reason to have so much negative energy over incredibly short-term MMO server outages. Seriously... take a breather. Most of us (I think) are adults, and we're immersed each day in real problems with real consequences. Don't let something that's ultimately fun and meaningless become so serious that it makes you anxious or stressed out.

Just... relax.

Things are broken though... Which is all that matters. Don't know why you are getting mad at what doesn't matter.

And again, nothing is ever perfect at launch. Not one person can name an MMO with a perfect launch. Why is this one so different?

It isn't.

If i handed you a **** on a stick and told you it was a popsicle, would you take my work for it? B/c thats essentially what SE (and every other MMO on release) is doing.

They're telling you its EA so that people will think they need to buy the game NOW so they don't miss out on being able to play early.

Technically yes, this play time is labeled as "Early Access", but the only real difference is whether you decide to pay the money now or 3 days from now.
#6 Aug 25 2013 at 10:38 AM Rating: Decent
Exactly it isn't... So people have the right to complain. Just like in every other game that comes out. You pay for a product you are allowed to complain.

I don't get how games are immune to complaints. Immune to wanting it done right.
One thing I never understood these same people would complain if their sandwich was made wrong 5 times in a row yet a game can pound you in the *** and people love it.

True. But your 30-day free time with box cost doesn't start until official launch, soooooo...

If I tell you a cow is a bird will it be able to fly?

What percentage of players do you suppose signed up for early launch as opposed to waiting for "release"? This whole thing is a common marketing tool geared around our human nature of wanting to feel special. There is another thread that explains that quite eloquently. The key point to understand is that it is a retail release. It is not beta and therefore we paid for what was to be a ready for release product. Its not, pure and simple. I will go back and check on my purchase but I am relatively certain it didn't have a disclaimer stating early access was in fact similar to an early beta phase.

If that fact doesn't bother you fantastic.

Some people are just sheep and don't realize the intricacies of marketing. But than again, that's exactly why marketing exists; to control and guide the minds of these people who don't understand.

Closer analogy: SE handed everyone popsicles but we're all crowded in a really hot room without air conditioning and they're melting all over our hands faster than we can eat them. Now we're all sticky.

Well they fixed the problem now since we can't even get server lists anymore. Beta Phase 5 as per usual.

You might also want to take into consideration that some people might have requested this time off to be able to play their new game. The new game that they preordered with their faith in the company to deliver them the ability to play during the time that said company designated as playable pre-launch. Now they are sitting at home twiddling their thumbs, eating up their vacation/sick day/just plain not getting paid day being unable to even sit in queue to get into the server that they made a character on last week. Whenever they do finally get to log on they receive message after message about another maintenance in 10 minutes forcing them to go through the entire process again.

Seeing as how the game just crashed again; I guess we're all trolls (good or bad) stuck in the same room with a pile of **** (FF servers) sitting in the corner.

The problem seems to be that the servers are over loaded which SE didn't see coming and they don't have overflow servers and are probably hesitant about adding extra servers that will be unnecessary in a couple weeks, so I can see these problems lasting for a while during prime times and weekends for the first couple weeks.

I really think SE has horrid or just ignorant technicians. In business, you always plan for having more than you need. It's also a popular mantra in the military. It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have. If they would've spent additional increments of money for more server capacity, they would've saved a lot more compared with all of the emergency maintenance they've had to do with their prior pis-poor preparation.

I'm not going to deny that one can expect these thing during early access, but so far this weekend I wasn't abe to do some quests, I wasn't able to enter, just till moments ago it couldn't load the list of NA/EU servers, and now the world is full again. And really, I had more stuff to do this weekend. This little list here is my experience from a few hours of play scattered over this weekend. I started in Uldah with my lvl 50 character and I haven't even made it to Limsa which shouldn't be too hard judging by the amount of carbuncles darting around.

I do get your point, really. But could you at least agree with me that this all looks quite clumsy?

Not that I condone the level of ire directed at Square Enix. I comprehend what occurs when launching an MMO. But I do disagree with this "It's just early access" nonsense.

Pre-orders are a mutually beneficial agreement. The consumer agrees to plunk down their hard-earned cash and the developer agrees to deliver on some extra goodies.

The consumer gets said extra goodies and the developer gets to boast in news articles and advertisements that "X amount of people already have bought the game."

Imagine if the pre-order bonus was a physical item. Say, a statue of Gaius. But when it came around, the sending out of said statues was a floundering disaster. They made fewer statues than they needed. Many were sent to the wrong address. Many more were broken.

Would you still tell these people to be grateful? That their statue was nothing more than a bonus and they didn't even "pay" for it?

In reality, early access is a soft launch. The most troubling thing about these errors is that we're now looking at the fourth time since Phase 4 that they said they were fixed and everything was good to go.

People have been experiencing 90000/3012 and the like since at least Phase 3 and each subsequent "fix" only serves to exacerbate it. If it's this crippling during a soft launch when SE knew exactly how many players were going to be potentially accessing the game, what's going to happen over the next week or so when the servers are hit with people who might pick it up on a whim?

Again, I know MMO launches will have errors and bugs that crop up when a mass of players log on, but at what point in technology's history does that yield as an excuse? Especially for a company that has a decade of experience in maintaining servers for an MMO?

Every game launched these days has a multiplayer component. Are we as consumers not allowed to expect that at some point there will be enough experienced people in the industry to at least not have an MMO limp its way into a launch date?

Few games these days have these sort of basic issues. Bugs are one thing. The inability to log in is quickly becoming inexcusable.

The problem that substantiating the errors from this weekend with claims this is merely "Early Access" is completely hogwash. It's like being a season pass holder for Six Flags and getting to come in before the park opens but not being able to get on any rides. If I wanted to test the system I'd have just been engaged in the Beta. Less anyone forgets 1.0 beta ended with screams from the testers saying the game wasn't ready but it launched to stay on schedule (we know the rest of the story). Phase 4 of the Alpha was a miserable 48 hours with server/log in errors and I think we were foolishly hopeful that these errors would not persist into Early Access.

In relaunching the MMO SE has been granted their second chance to make a first impression. It *should* have been a flawless execution. Early Access folks are the most die hard of SE fans and were likely testers since alpha and we also had the furthest to fall when our expectations aren't met. This is not a launch of an MMO. That was 2010.
