had great/useful non battle related abilities? i.e things like listening skill (lets you eavesdrop on conversations behind locked doors), trap setting and trap detection as well as trap disarming (i know that would be battle related) appraisal skill lets you see who made an item or what its hidden effects (if any) are etc etc? I miss MMOs that had systems that complex. i dont think theres been an mmo with abilities like that since the 90s.. am i wrong?

Couldn't say, I actually never played an mmo like that but your description kind of reminds me of the sword art online anime.

Anyway my guess is that people are becoming more casual and looking for more fun with less hassle (i.e. in depth skill building or skill management).

Those MMOs are still around. They're just a time-traveling DeLorean away. Set destination to 1995 and hope you don't run into Biff.
