Hey, my friend has done the level 15 story quest, has access to all three cities and done the level 20 gladiator storyline but still hasn't unlocked the retainer.
What story mission specifically does she need to finish to get a retainer?
Mine seemed to open up after the level 15 story quest, I thought. But I have no idea. I couldn't get it, and then all of the sudden I could.
All the guides answers seem vague or out of date. Sorry if I missed it in the zam guides.

Now we've both done our first dungeon, and still it says she can't kill an eft. Someone in the game told her that she has to finish three dungeons. Could it be tied to the trade guild quests?
Can you craft stuff with lots of fiber in it?
I thought it was actually triggered by the level 17 quest, after some searching yesterday. Checking, checking...here you are:

I guess I got it for legacy. But... it didn't let me take it right away, maybe not till I was 17?

If you had any main battle class over 17 and had hired the retainers back in 1.0, they should have been ok. In fact, the names you chose during 1.0 were provisioned already when 're-hiring' them, so yeah, it might have just been some delay due to all the server issues.
