The Greatest MMO Ever MadeFollow

Yep, I'll say it. I'm not alone in saying it. Despite launch issues it truly is a masterwork.

I may be pissed about not getting to play much during EA... but I'm still obviously a HUGE fan...

It's just so gosh darn pretty. There are times when I'm running around doing a quest and I just have to stop and look because it's so lovely. The sunset over the ocean in La Noscea, the mountains on the horizon... the stars and the galaxy at night.

Certainly my favourite MMO of all time, in my opinion I agree, best MMO of all time (for me as a Final Fantasy fan).

Lol I was saying this right when I first got to play it in beta... I was getting bashed for saying that.

You don't need to play a game for more than a few days to know it's a masterpiece.

I forced myself to stop using the map when I roam around just so I could fully take in the environment they created. It's breathtaking! And caused me a lot of concern the first time I ran into a lightning storm. I thought my video card was crashing at first. It never occurred to me that they could create a lightning storm and make it look...well...like a lightning storm.

I thought the same thing! Oh crap my video is dying... waaaaiiiiiit...

My girlfriend and I hit some of the same hiccups others did this weekend, but honestly, it's the first game in a long time that drew us in as much as it did. I was off yesterday too and man, 3 straight days of waking up early and going to bed late took a bit of a toll on me, but I'll say confidently it was worth it. We're both having a blast with the game so far and it's been impressive how immersed you can get. Doing a quest, join a FATE, back to the quest, find a hunting log target.. it's more fluid than most other games are.

What I most appreciate about it is how much it feels like a coherent world rather than just a bunch of vaguely related set pieces. It's not some standard set of fantasy textures or stories either: there's rich wood, gently reflective glass that looks like something from a banker's lamp, skies that are beautifully realistic, more npcs that have character (pardon the pun), etc etc. Like some others have said in this thread I can happily just walk around looking at things and soaking it all in.

It's also unabashedly romantic (in the larger sense, not just 'two people in love' sense). Some may find it a bit corny but when I'm in the mood for high fantasy I'm looking for something idealistic and enthusiastic, and that's just what FF XIV is like. You can pick at the mechanics of combat or classes or crafting or whatever, but it nails atmosphere and world building better than any other MMO, at least from what I've seen so far. GW2 probably comes the closest in terms of atmosphere/story/coherent world that has strong graphics to back it up, and I'm not ready to say which I prefer yet, I'll have to get to the higher levels in FF XIV before I make that call, but it's clearly had lots of love and care and attention to detail poured into it, so I'm looking forward to much, much more exploring!

Mark my words here and now. Yoshida will go on to produce other FF titles and I believe he'll be held as the savior of their company. He's quite the visionary with a great career ahead of him.

That's it. Right there. That's the key quality that pulls me in to every Final Fantasy game without fail. That romanticism of story, environment, character and breath.

I'm in love with it, I've been in love with it since I was a child and it feels so much alive in this game.

This is why other RPGs rarely measure up to a Final Fantasy game for me. I'm glad it's so richly prevalent in this game.

It is definitely a masterpiece. Here's hoping all its launch problems get fixed.

This is an honest question:

What are you basing your opinion on? What qualities/aspect of this game are superior to others?

Why does it have to be superior to other games for it to be a master piece?

Thats like if i say this cheeseburger from mcdonalds is a masterpiece and you asking what qualities does that cheese burger have over burgerking and wendys cheeseburgers

This is exactly what I thought. The atmosphere is so incredibly similar to the days of F2P on iRO servers. The community is bustling, everyone is excited and pumped to progress and work together, and the content is of the highest quality.

I have not been addicted to a game like this since FFXI. And prior to that, iRO and D2.

Agreed. I've barely made it out of Limsa Lominsa, but I have to say I'm incredibly impressed so far and I've barely scratched the surface. I'm hoping that this is just the beginning and it will just get better and better.
