...and EVERY SINGLE NA/EU SERVER was closed to character creation. Except for Coeurl...which closed the moment I refreshed the World List.

I don't know if that's disappointing or incredible. Definitely a jaw-dropping moment, at any case!

Procedures during Periods of High Congestion (Aug. 21)
We are expecting major congestion during the period starting with the Early Access on Aug. 24, 2013 at 2:00 a.m. (PDT) leading up to the official game launch on Aug. 27, 2013 (PDT).

If a large volume of players attempt to login to the game simultaneously, certain players may receive the following message: “This World is currently full. Players in queue: ##.” If you receive this message, we ask that you please wait until your login is processed.

In addition, in order to avoid server congestion related issues from multiple characters concentrating in the starting areas, we may implement restrictions on logins and/or the creation of new characters for a period of time after the servers open to the public.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

It will get better, just have to give it time. I know everyone's clamoring for some action. :)

Yeah, I don't think they anticipated the reaction that they got. Which is disappointing on one hand, but also impressive on the other. Just wish they had had some kind of plan in mind.

Actually they do have a plan in mind. It hasn't been announced in great detail, but it seems they'll be adding more servers. I wish I could find the information that I read concerning this. It was listed as about a week into development to add more to the facilities infrastructure.

Found it (below)

Quote:

Thank you very much for playing FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Currently, an extremely high number of players are enjoying the game. Should the number of players continue to increase at the current pace, there is the possibility that our expectations and server capacity will be greatly surpassed. Therefore, in order to maintain a stable gameplay environment, we are implementing login and character creation restrictions.

In order to be able to welcome a drastically greater number of players, we are starting as early as this week with preparations to increase our facilities, to be ready by early next week. Until that time, we will be continuing to implement these restrictions as required, and we ask for your understanding and patience.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and once again thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

I'm an easy-going guy, but 1017 on the actual launch day is inexcusable. Absolutely ridiculously bad. All those people who didn't make the EA rushing home to play the game and can't even make a character, let alone those of us who are already playing that can't get online now, it's really disappointing. I know it'll get better but launch day is the one day you need to at least get the login issues sorted.

That's a lot more counter-intuitive than you think. I do understand the frustration though. Right now SE is erroring on the side of limited population over servers crashing completely. I'm assuming they will add more servers, but that isn't an extremely quick fix either.

I've played many an mmo on launch day and my own opinion is that I'd rather have crashes than the complete inability to get online at all. Rollbacks suck, but at the very least, it's better than hammering away at the login screen with little hope of success.

You can make characters on JP based servers. Most of the people in them speak english anyways, as there is mass exodus of NA/EU players seeking refuge where they may actually be able to play. It runs smooth as well, really not any different from the NA/EU servers. The que times are a bit rough though. /shrug

Yeah, only one NA server seems to open up at a time, when they are open. Just going to wait for Ultros. Might be a while but pales in comparison for how long I plan on being in this game.

what? not being able to play and being rolled back will amount to the exact same thing. In any case, what there doing is in my opinion the best solution they have until they bring more servers online. At least when you do get in, the game runs smooth with no issues at all.

I'm going to test character creation tomorrow morning in the early hours (7ish EDT) to see if it's possible then. If so that's when I'd recomend doing so. I'll let you know if I have any personal success, as I have 2 characters to create, and 1 to transfer once transfer services are open.

They could have easily put more servers before launch. As a precautionary measure, It always looks better for a company when there seems to be a shortage of supply with a heavier demand. It sucks, but the downside would have been unequally distribution of population.

Think of it as shopping lanes at the grocery lane. Safeway, for example, has like a million of them available but only 3 or 4 open at a time. They don't want to open all the lanes 24/7 because it won't be cost effective. So imagine Safeway having all lanes open and a checker permanently stationed even when the rush is over...paying employees to stand at a checkout when there are no customers to help...not very cost effective.

I think SE is trying to stabilize the "lines" so that each server is equally distributed while trying to get the maximum cost per player per server.

-In short the customers get screwed with login problems while SE is initially figuring it out. It's all business. Don't take it personally.

There's one very important difference to having more MMO servers and Safeway lines. Safeway lines don't merge when the demand is no longer there. Merging servers is well known to be the "death knell" of an MMO. It destroys communities and really plays havok with the player base, even if it is just to handle the initial launch rush. Adding servers just as a short term fix will cause far more long-term problems.

A great analogy and awesome way to look at it. What people don't seem to realize is that SE is already working the books from the red. 1.0 lost them millions of dollars and the success of this is going to give them a chance to recoup some of those. I think that is more their focus at this point than simply making money. People are also under the assumption that a server for an MMO would cost the typical price of a high end home user PC. Buzz. wrong answer. Anyone got the numbers off hand? I don't know the ball park these days, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was close to 20k or more per server, not including the manpower to maintain them. Regardless, they are going to do what they have to do, and they prove that by stating they're already looking into more servers. There was just no way they were going to overshoot this and try and recoup even MORE losses later, considering they were already so much in the red. Would have been a lot different had this been 1.0, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Yeah, I'm going to try making a character on Ultros when I wake up for work tomorrow. The servers free up considerably outside of a region's primetime. All EU worlds are open right now, for example. At least when I checked a little more than a half hour ago.

They did announce earlier today that they added Ultros and a couple of other servers to the list that wont have character creation available for now. Luckily, I got my girlfriend's character created about 6:30 AM PST today.
