Need help with parallels set up Follow

Greetings,

Firstly let me just say that i have the game for the PS3 and absolutely LOVE IT. LOVED IT during the open beta. In fact I loved it so much i got the pc download of the CE. Im an old school ffxi player and the format is sooo familiar to me its uncanny.

^nuff with the mooshy nostalgia crap, onto the point of the post. Is there anyone running this on their Macs via parallels? I have windows 7 and I am currently getting nailed with the "Windows cannot find '//psf/Home/Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/downloads/ffxivupdater.exe". I tried relocating the documents to the public area but then as soon as I clicked on the icon it sent it back to the home document folder. This is EXTREMELY frustrating and I feel like im overlooking something in the process.

As far as being able to run the game I got a very high rating on the benchmark and it [my Mac with virutal machine through parallels] ran it beautifully. that being said Ive hit a bloody speed bump. Like I said I have the game for PS3 but I have to deal with wife aggro after 11 pm at night and id rather have the freedom to play it when i want versus having to answer to my uptight significant other.

As I said above this may be such and obviously easy fix, however i havent run across it yet so while i wait for it to download etc for my PS3 im going to continue to work on it. I'm currently running the highest end 15" retina display MBP with 650 nvidia, 768 gigs of flash memory, 2.8 i7 quad core and 16 gig of ram. I can run any other game for PC but this one and only because of the bloody error with the updater exe.

Post Script: multiple [and i mean more than 15] rate ups for posts for all that give me the right advise. If i could give you gil in game in exchange i would but that might be a EULA violation so I wont make that kind of guarantee.

Thanks in advance,

Try running it via BootCamp. That's what I'm doing.

Well, even though you have a fairly nice system already, it will run faster through BC because you're not running a virtual machine, you're running the actual Windows OS, so your resources are freed up to be wholly dedicated to that OS.

I personally didn't try to run it through Parallels, because I knew I'd need the extra horsepower inside a native Windows OS to run it efficiently, but my guess is the error you are receiving is because of something to do with the VM.

I've installed FFXIV on two separate computers that are both running BC and have yet to see that error... working like a charm!

Good luck!

I don't think Parallels would be able to handle that. Boot camp is the way to go.

Made an account here just to reply to this. Under Parallels with a retina MBP and also with a mid 2011 iMac, FFXIV:ARR runs actually quite well under the "Laptop-High" settings, but gets choppy in major cities at peak times. Under "Laptop-Standard" however, it runs pretty much perfectly. I have not noticed any slowdowns at all and saves me the hassle of restarting every time.

Redfencer, to fix your "Windows cannot find '//psf/Home/Documents/My Games/FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn/downloads/ffxivupdater.exe" issue, I found that it was because Parallels is sharing the mac documents drive, and apparently FFXIV doesn't like that (or using any mapped drives for that matter...). The fix is to launch your Virtual Machine, then select "Virtual Machine -> Configure" on your top bar menu. Click on the 'Options' tab, then select 'Sharing'. uncheck the box that says "Share Mac use folders with Windows" which will set your documents folder back to your VM's C:/ drive. It will require you to log out and back in on the VM to make the change, and then you are all set to go!

Enjoy.

Edit to add: Keep in mind this doesnt mean you can't still access your Mac's documents drive, it just means it will not be force mapped to be your actual "My documents" folder.

Ok so I tried that and it still isnt seeing the updater. I even tried not sharing windows apps with mac os. It disabled the crystal feature. Still getting the same issue Pyro.

Was really hoping for a decent fix on this so i can play this to my hearts desire on my laptop. Any additonal ideas would be helpful. thanks in advance. I also went step by step as well. Reset the virtual machine then shut it all the way down and started it back up again after changing the configuration.

Ok so update,

It is now downloading and I figured out that there are actually pages when the "share windows with Mac" has to be unchecked.

I can't wait to play it now on my Mac though! Thanks again pyro!

Thanks for posting this!

I have been playing on my 15" retina MacBook Pro for a while now, but I work in OSX and it's inconvenient to switch to Windows every time I want to play... Going to upgrade to Parallels 9 (currently using 7) and give it a shot.

I will be happy if I can get it running at low-medium settings at an acceptable frame rate... I play on a proper gaming rig at home so I don't mind if I don't get to see the eye candy when I'm on the road.
