Just because the acronym doesn't technically make sense isn't really important. How often have you heard someone talk about an "ATM Machine" or a "PIN Number?"

The word "toon" predates WoW by quite a bit. It goes all the way back to the beginning, when MMORPGs were called Graphical MUDs and the art was super cartoony because it was easier for the machines of the day to process. I realize it grates on some people because they don't want to think about the fact that their avatar (which is a far more correct term you will never convince anyone to use) is an animated figure on a screen.

Bottom line, the purpose of language is communication. If you know what they're talking about without any difficulty, then communication has happened and nothing further needs to be accomplished.

I always use a Stephen Colbert tone of voice. And when I talk to my cat, I refer to her as "Nation" even though her name is Luna.

"Nation, I don't want you attacking my feet while I am sleeping... which brings us to tonight's word: 'Garden Hose' ."

I don't even understand why people get annoyed with the word "toon" or w/e else. Are they insulting your character or something?

I came from wow and eve online. In both games I used all kinds of terms toon char character w/e came easier for me. I didn't care and no one cared around me either.

I mean seriously who cares. What is it gonna be you gonna put a guy in a test before accepting him in your party and if he says toon or any other "un accepted" term you gonna boot him?

Right now I say char but some times I may go with toon who knows who cares.

It's not me that has the problem but the ones that don't like it.

Downrate me all you want now.

Well for those that never played EQ or any other mmo other then ffxi.

DD was direct damage. And was used in reference to one of two types of spells. Wizards had 'nukes' which were essentially direct damage (all damage in one blow), while classes like necromancers had DoTs (Damage over time) spells like poison etc.

Since DD already reference a type of magic, the holy trinity of Tank - Healer ( or priest in some games) - and damage classes was instead called tanks - healers - and dps. Since DPS is what your class brought to the table.

So from the outside looking in, anyone who called their class a DD class, in my head I read it as a Direct Damage class and associate it with direct damage casting classes.

Do I care/flame DD people for using the term...nope... still know what they are talking about after the initial confusion. But honestly, we are basically playing a anime mmo, so by definition we are all toons!

DD = direct damage
DPS = damage per secon
DOT = Damage over time

These were the eq terms that came from pretty much the grand daddy of all MMO today.

Before EQ was Gemstone. That is the great grand daddy. "Listen Kiddies, there was once a time where our MMOs didnt have pictures!"

So you are telling me between D&D table top to MUDs, terms changed? I never got into D&D, but friends who did used terms that seem to have been passed up the line of Fantasy/Sci-fi group games.

D&D is not an MMO, unless we are in the Matrix and our biological selves are connected somehow into a virtual network... Although the terms in some aspects do originate with D&D, I would have said D&D but I was only going as far back as the mid 90s when everyone first started really getting online to play games with other folks.

There are so many ways to deal damage. DOT is actually indirect damage imo. I really think that DD = Damage Dealer is a much more appropriate term, because under your conditions I would not consider something like a Poison effect to be direct damage. So you would not be able to call a caster using poison a DD because they are not bringing direct damage. Under my DD = Damage Dealer, the caster with poison would be a DD.

Its all semantics, really...

Unless it came out prior to EQ is doesn't apply in the conversation, but yes, you are right.

I wonder how many players feel that DPS shouldn't be used as a noun, but still use TNL as one.

Personally, I prefer the acronym DD over DPS. It's one less letter and doesn't require typing letters from opposite sides of the keyboard.

As in, "my DPS guy." Then it's shortened to "my DPS" because everyone knows what you're talking about.

Yes, but I thought using an adjective in the place of a noun was funny when you remove the acronym and spell out the words. By the way, I looked for you in game yesterday a few times to give you a FC invite and musit said you were not online. Maybe I just missed, I ran a bunch of dungeons yesterday so I wasn't looking around constantly...

I was locked out of Ultros (again, and again, and again) so I gave up and tried Lamia, where I got in pretty quickly.

Then I saw a shout I needed in XI and eventually just logged out of XIV complete.

I'll try to get a spot on Ultros today.... we'll see.

Well on one of duty finder videos the guys used the term dee pee ess to refer to the damage dealers so I don't there is a certain words that need to be used.

But what gets me is that in a world where u, r, lol, heals, -san, ure, ***, and others are used. We are complaining about a simple thing as toon.

To me 'toon' is unreal. My ff characters are real. They are me. The avatars are a representation of me. Different aspects but still me. I will never use toon as a name to call any of my characters which I prefer to call by their names. If a person is playing in WoW then by all means use the slang common there. This is not WoW or some other lesser game where apparently real people dont play. :D

Yeah, but don't let anyone see you accidentally call a FATE a RIFT. They're the exact same thing and the person will understand what you mean, but since FF is the greatest ever and nothing else approaches, you will be the recipient of much Smiley: mad

In WoW you might have called it a toon because it was a passing, irrelevant thing. A childish term because you didn't care about it. You'd throw it away and roll another character at the drop of a hat because that's how the game was.

In FFXI we had our characters for years (mine dates to 2003), even predating WoW and many of you even playing MMOs at all, so a sense of respect for something that was more like a tattoo than a pair of shoes was warranted (because nobody would willingly reroll in XI).

So if you call them toons, I get to call you a kiddie. Fair enough?

Now excuse me while I go back to camping the server list.

The term toon originated before or around the time of ultimate online and has nothing to do with the recent / newer mmos.
