Since there is no Red Mage or Blue Mage. I'm going to start off with Arcantist and move up to Scholar as my main job. I'm not really a pet type guy except for Dragoon in FFXI. I'm not into rolling with carby or that dumb pixie around me. Are these classes dependent on them or can you role without summoning them?

The class is fairly dependent on them.

Being a key factor of the job, it's going to be balanced around making use of their pets. It'd be like playing a THM but just beating this with your wand instead of casting magic, or using your fists as a Lancer.

Arcanist branches to Summoner. They are basically low level summoners.

Both SCH and SMN are pet-dependant. You can't just not use the pets if that's what you're asking.

FF14 WHM feels a bit like FF11 RDM to me after leveling my WHM to 50. WHM actually puts out a good amount of damage compared to healing classes in other games, Cleric Stance lets you be offensive when the opportunity arises. Though Cleric Stance reminds me more of a FF11 Scholar switching between Light/Dark.

Yeah I was afraid of that. Might chose a different class then

I don't know if they get better at higher levels but all the one's I've seen look like they were designed by 5 years olds next to character models.

Being my first FF game, when I say them the first time I asked if they were some sort of freebie cosmetic pet. When I was told they were the actual class pet I was pretty disappointed.

IDK Why this post got subdefault, bc everyone who has played ffxi or previous ff's knows it is true. FFXI had some pretty cool looking summons. and these look very similar to games that were released back in 2008... games like AION and others

I love FF and have played many of their games, but even I agree with this statement. Unless we are all missing the cool looking summons somehow? but I have yet to see one that im impressed with. aside from the actual fights such as ember bowl and what not.
#13vahlmyth, Posted: Aug 31 2013 at 2:39 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Unless you're basing your comparison on Asian MMOs alone (only dabbled in Aion before the color palette nearly blinded me) then you need to go back more than 10 years to find comparably simplistic/uninspired pet design.

You probably -could- play Arcanist without using Carby... But the real question is why you would want to do that.

Compared to Conjurer and Thaumaturge with their Potency: 140~150 magic, an Arcanist's Ruin with a potency of only 80 is really going hurt you if you dont use carby for the extra damage. You get some nice debuffs, and you could technically be a healer. But you could be all that with Carby out as well.

For people like you (and well, me) who dont really like to use Carbuncle, if you set him to "Sic", he will attack what you attack automatically and use Abilities as soon as they are ready. It removes the tactics people can implement that actually hotbar all his attacks, and in general you will do a little worse, but you can pretty much ignore Carby for the entirety of your Arcanist life up to 15 or so. He'll do whatever, and you'll benefit from it regardless.

Frankly I agree that Scholar shouldn't have been a pet class -- seems rather strange to me (and the fact that the pixie controls badly is another issue) -- but at the same time I'd have to say that of course you need to be using your pet when playing a pet class! Smiley: tongue

Use your pet, it's balanced around having it. That said, the pet can pretty much be put on auto for raw numbers and you can focus on what the pet isn't doing.

I think for me, I just don't like carby or that pixie. I wish I could get something else if I need to have a pet. I think carby is stupid and never liked it. The pixie is dumb also imo. Give me something cooler to roll with if I need a pet. Also Sch shouldn't be a pet class

Unfortunately, yes, the pet is a major part of being an Arcanist.

I too wanted to have an Arcanist-style class that didn't have pets. I like DoTs, I really enjoy versatility and utility (having debuffs and heals together with acceptable damage). I would eagerly trade my pet for some Crowd Control skill in its place.

But well, it's bearable. We'll certainly have Red Mage and Blue Mage someday, I imagine, so it's just a matter of time.

You probably won't want to play Red Mage either, then, because anyone who focuses on the proper parts of that class knows to treat their feathered hat like a much-loved pet. Smiley: nod

Sounds like Conjurer to me. Conjurer's well very early-on get a wind-elem DoT, cure, and an earth-elemental nuke. It's not just a straight up healer class at all.

I agree with this largely. Carby is nice, and looks like carby should but the mini ifrits etc are really **** ugly, and they don't really look menacing. It's a shame they went with gimpy looking summoner pets vs classic looking ones.

Here is how I think it's supposed to work.....any mage CLASS is going to be like being a red mage since CLASSES are supposed to be less specialized than jobs. When you equip a JOB crystal, you stop being a "red mage" and specialize into either White or Black mage for example. So IMO Red mage is already there.... sort of.... people just don't see it without all the red getup on. Level all 3 mage classes, pick one, stay CLASS and not job, and swap in some abilities. Perhaps then you'll have your makeshift "Red Mage."

I just hope that in some situations (like soloing for example) classes turn out being more useful than jobs, else they should just get rid of classes all together.

I haven't leveled much mage yet, so I could be full of it, but I think classes are supposed to be the jack of all trade red mages.

I have to say I enjoyed what I was able to play of arcanist simply because it's so fricking over powered. You can more easily kill two monsters at once compared to other classes because Carby can knock out one while you work on the other, and even the emerald carby is a better tank than your character starting from level one.
