I'd say an hour or two hours. Any less and you kick people who are legitimately afk. Any longer and you're defeating the purpose of including it.

FFXI not only let you disable it, but also let you set the timer, because when it came out PS2s were still on dial up modems, and so were some PCs. So having a 10 minute no input disconnect made sense because if you were still online, you couldn't get any phone calls...

Maybe allow users to select between 30 minutes to 2 hours for XIV?

No. I agree with you. Having a mandatory AFK boot timer is not a solution to the real problem which is server capacity and capability.

heh speaking of PS4 version im planning to rebuy it on there (and getting it for my gaming laptop next month). But the mentioned world transfers so ppl can play with their friends as intended? So theyre going to reunlock ALL the worlds that are currently locked right now? If so wouldnt that just cause the login issues/server full issues again? Lastly what if 99% of the playerbases friends are on Gilgamesh or Ultros? can the servers handle 1k or 2k ppl transferring to each of those servers? heck would it even handle.

I mean when they fixed the servers Ultros and gilgamesh were unlocked again less than 24 hours they posted a new update adding those servers back to the "locked list" that being said I doubt world transfer will work out for ALL of us unfortunately

I don't know about anyone else, but when i had dial up, we had an incoming call display pop up to let us know when a call was coming in.... till we just got a second phone line, instead of using just the one.

-edit- was pretty funny that day.
me"mom, dad. we need a second phone line."
parents"why?"
me "cause grandma and grandpa call too often, for too long for me to be able to enjoy the games you bought for me for my birthday."
parents"well that's not our fault, and we can't exactly tell them to stop calling."
me "no, but i could give up my allowance and try to convince you to get a second, long distance capable phone line."
parents *pick up phone to call phone company*
me *mission complete.* Que fanfare.

Seems like it would defeat the purpose if you could just switch it off and idle all day while swimming at the lake.

FFXI had an idle timer you could switch off. If you have it enabled by default, 60% of the population is to stupid to disable it. So you've implemented it and given people a choice, which the people like, and still solve your problem, because people are dumb.

Hopefully it's 2 hours, to cut out the over-nighters or gone-to-workers. You can get hung up doing htings and be longer than an hour. I think night and work time kicks would take out most of hte people that are doing this.

KaneKitty wrote:
As has been covered in other threads, yes, an AFK timer is practically useless. I can autorun, turn a controller upside down, put a paperweight over the 'W' key, or use a very simple key-press script to easily circumvent it. If anyone wants to stay online, they can still do so easily, AFK timer or not.

So, on the one hand we have people claiming that the populous at large would be too stupid to disable the AFK timer if there were an option in the menus, and on the other hand lacking that functionality, everyone is smart enough to circumvent the system via 3rd party software or other measures... So is everybody too stupid to check a box or too smart to be confounded by an involuntary AFK system?

this is why friends should keep communications flowly between themselves to help keep scenarios such as this from happening. Like my self, i am waiting for a few buddies to let me know which server they wanna join, and then we will all join at the exact same time. reduces the possibility of a server locking just before joining.

ok lets say youre all on different servers or some arent playing at all because of the server they want not being available... joining at the exact same time would still pose a problem.. why? Surely you all have lives.. whats the likelyhood of lets say all 5 of you being online at the same time? surely one is gonna be at work, spending time with family, at school etc etc

I wish I had your luck, I tried at about 5:00pm CDT and I got 1017'd a bunch so I gave up on Ultros.

See look at that. The servers are (mostly) running smooth, they're planning transfers in the near future, and they're even implementing the AFK timer that certain people just wouldn't shut up about. I'm going to just say this: called it (save the AFK timer because I really wasn't a supporter of it). I understand skepticism and cynicism is the order of the day, but sometimes you have to have a little faith. SE does not want this game to fail anymore then we do.

But wow, 325k concurrent connections? That really is amazing. But the true test is when the free trial periods are over and SE starts getting those subscription fees. Will that number begin to slowly decline, since launch is usually when you have the most business? Or can SE pull an EVE Online and increase their userbase overtime? It's gonna be an interesting few months, at any rate!

I don't mind an Auto-logout due to inactivity.

Sometimes I think I'm getting up for just a small thing, but then circumstances conspire to keep me away from my PC for hours or more. I really don't mind getting logged out. Then my screensaver can activate, right on.

This is yet another issue that people think they care passionately about, but then after it's implemented it's like, "Meh, whatever."

Or even, "Hey those exclamation marks above the quest guys are actually really useful!"

I'm guessing there will be a lot of churn for a while. Some of the early adopters will drop when the next shiny thing comes out (TESO and Wildstar don't have any firm dates but there's always some big console game releases in November), but there will also be an uptick in curious people who were waiting to see if it sucked like 1.0 did, or if SE was going to resolved the inevitable bumps from the first few weeks.

Really, the ball is in SE's court on how fast they keep the content coming. There is a certain demographic of game user who will blow through all the content in two weeks, stop playing (and possibly paying) for a few months, and then when the next big patch comes out, resub. XI always has a rise in subscriptions due to returnees whenever they release a new expansion (and then a subsequent drop off the next month or two as people remember why they quit the first time. Or fourth or fifth time.)

This really caught my eye.

I wonder if we'll start seeing even more commercials to capitalize on the positive reviews and good word-of-mouth advertising this game is getting.

Elder scrolls online.. That one even has me curious, I have always like the series.

I completely agree with what you are saying too... ..

Once a mmo starts rolling new members become a little harder to get because they feel left behind...

Yea we have a ps4 on order for Tesee but I am actually thinking of also going ps4 and drop pc if the version is real good because it will have chat built in.

That is the one reason I played Xbox FFXI instead of PC was chat was so easy...

Hopefully better commercials this time. Honestly that last commercial made me embarrassed by association.

There are way more than enough cut scenes that are awesome to edit together, and gameplay footage itself would likely be the biggest draw.

Agreed. Even if it was RL that dragged you away from the game, then so be it. If you are in duty finder and doing something else while you wait, you should still be checking in every so often and you can twitch your character. If you got sidetracked for 20+ minutes then clearly playing this game was not your priority and you should yield to someone that has been trying for those same 20 minutes to simply get in. Granted, this is less of a concern as things do seem to be improving, but regardless of that, if you haven't done anything in the game for over 20 minutes then you aren't "playing" the game and should be booted to maximize resources for those that ARE playing the game.

i dint forget it at all.. its just that through communication when you finally can synchronize everyone getting on at the same time, its probably 2 weeks after world transfer and the server you guys wanted to get on is now inaccessible again lol

fair enough i suppose, but from what i gather, unless im incorrect. you pick the server you want to play on, don't you, or did that change. as long as there is room on the server, and you can each pick seperately, then it shouldn't matter. the world transfers are for the people who need the transfer for after the fact, like meeting a new friend and wanting to play on their server instead. i think... or am i barking up the wrong tree here?

well some of us are on JP server due to wanting to play and not being able to play because of all the login issues. Now sure I could just get them all to come to the server Im on (which would be easy Im sure) but theres specific server we all want to join because of the community.... if it was just a simple task of all 5 of us pick any server (that the same) an dplay on it then it would be easy but we all want to join a specific server.. which might be harder
