Quote:
This morning Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia released a video interview with Final Fantasy XIV: a Realm Reborn Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida as part as its “Conversations with Creators” series.

In the Interview Yoshida San made a series of interesting points on how the PS4 version of Square Enix’s MMORPG will look and feel when it’ll be released next year. Here’s a summary of his answers:

Since the hardware specs of the PS4 are high and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will use them to their full potential, there will be a large improvement in the number of characters displayed on screen at the same time compared to the PS3 version, and in the quality of each character. The difference in graphical fidelity will be very visible.
Remote Play with the PS Vita will be fully supported. Yoshida-san makes the example of gathering, fishing, crafting or questing solo while relaxing on the couch on the PS Vita, and then, when the time for party play starts, one can switch to the PS4 to enjoy the challenging dungeon content on the big screen.
A companion app for the PS Vita is planned, including a database and the features of the new Lodestone, but Remote Play is the priority.

It will be possible to point and click in the PS4 version using the touch pad of the DualShock 4, improving the user interface further.
It’ll be possible to upload video using the Share button of the PS4 due to licensing agreements done with voice actors (Japanese laws are rather strict on this), also, videos made with the Share button will be useful to learn how to do difficult high level dungeons.
There will be no change in the content of the game moving from the PS3 version to the PS4 version, as the game will be fully cross platform, so you’ll still be able to play with the same friends.
Yoshida-san encourages players to consider switching to the PS4 version from the PS3 version, because the PS4′s hardware allows for an impressive performance, much better graphics and displaying 100 or 200 people at the same time on the screen. The passage will be immediate and seamless because the servers are the same and transferring character data is not necessary.
When asked about his point of view as a creator on what he likes the most of the PS4 Yoshida-san responded that it’s the memory size, because it gives more freedom of expression and design. You can create higher quality characters and levels. He also appreciates the wider choices of play style represented by the share button, Remote Play and companion apps. He feels that the PS4 will test the development team, making things easier and harder at the same time.

In my own interview with Yoshida-san, he explained that we can expect graphics comparable with the PC version from the PS4 version, and that’s no small feat. It’s hard not to be excited by the perspective of what we’re going to see when the game will launch on PS4.

In the meanwhile you can check out the video of Sony’s “Conversations with Creators” interview just below.

Well, a legit reason to buy a Vita after you buy a PS4 and rebuy the game for it anyway.

It just saddens me that it takes something in the neighborhood of $400 to make an additional $200 a legitimate purchase, is all. Smiley: frown

This makes me a happy camper considering I already own a Vita and was planning on getting a PS4 already. It will be nice to sit out on the deck and enjoy a beer while gathering once summer rolls around.

Never know, they might do a Ps4/Vita bundle to push this Remote play deal even more.

SWEEET!!!!

Maybe if it becomes popular, a native Vita client won't be too far behind!

Goddamnit! FFXIV is kicking the *** out of everything I want out of a game, let alone an MMO :)

Yes!!! i already have a ps vita and i love it!! it's a great gaming device.

It's also only 200$ now

The reason ps vita will have remote play is because Sony mandated all games to have remote play if not most of them.

I own the Vita and I am very happy with it, even without this news. But this news makes me happy is a very weird and indescribable place.

Was going to buy a Vita for Phantasy Star Online 2 until it was delayed indefinitely. This is really good news for Vita, whose sales are not all that good. Any word on release date? Will it be a stand-alone version, or will it require the PS4 to function? So many questions.

No really, what is the hardware. Is this going to be an issue?

No.

The simple reason is, it's using the ps4 processing power and then using the vita as a monitor / controller. That's the best explanation, but you will still need your PS4 on.

Simplified, it's basically a portable Playstation 2.5.

Right the 3G Vita. That's what I was thinking. But the processor won't handle FFXIV alone, without the PS4, right?

Or? Can you use your PS4 sitting in a remote location (like in another state) through 3G?

What I'm describing is a version of Cloud computing, the theory that you can use a keyboard and screen to access your home PC through the internet. You have the input devices, and the processing power is done remotely. As I understand it, some latency issue is holding this technology back.

First company to get this to work wins global domination.

Totally!

I'd much rather just have a version of the game with the PS3 specs that I can play on my Wii U, which comes ready-made for remote play straight out of the box.

Yeah, the Vita is supposed to use GaiKai at some point in the future but nothing was ever hashed out,

It's a bandwidth issue more than a latency one. Gaikai is one of the companies that have figured out how to best exploit cloud(streaming) gaming already. As someone who works in this industry, the secret of the PS4 is the cloud gaming aspect. Now because the bandwidth demand is too high to essentially do what a true cloud gaming experience would be which I'll list here for reference. Basically your PC/mouse/keyboard/controller is nothing more than an input device and all of the heavy lifting is done by the cloud service. It works similar to how Netflix streams video. Anyone who knows Netflix, you've probably heard they plan to go full HD by the next year or so. I won't bore you with the details, but let's just say they found a way around the bandwidth issue.

Now the PS4 is unique as Sony spent a lot of money on Gaikai for a reason. They know the technology isn't ready yet because not everyone has great internet speed. Frankly anything less than Google Fiber(1GB per sec) is too slow for true cloud gaming. However, here is one of the tricks that isn't known by most people. The graphics and other processes can be handled by the cloud to enhance(work with the existing hardware) to make games better. That means we can no longer just look at the specs and be like.."This sucks, I totally destroy this on my benchmark". Cloud gaming beats everything out there today if you consider the upgrade potential. I also predict Sony and 3rd parties will only test the waters early on. If people need a good enough internet connection to play a game, this could hurt sales. So I suspect Sony will instead use Gaikai to enhance the product for online gaming only...ie.. FFXIV, Call of Duty multiplayer and so forth.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention there is proof of the cloud being used by Sony already by their notes on the PS4. One example given was how you only had to download 1% of a game/demo(just like a Netflix buffer) an the game would allow you to play while it downloaded the rest. Meanwhile you're playing via the cloud. This proves it's possible to stream game data to the PS4 while you play it. Therefore, it's reasonable to assume that later in the PS4 lifecycle, you'll see more devs using this to compensate for the old tech.

There were already rumors of a bundle in August for $500. They should have done this for launch, as it would have sold a ton of Vita's. I know I would have immediately reserved one if it came with a Vita for $100 more.

Wait you have to buy a PS4 in order to have remote play on the Vita? I don't know a PS3 or a Vita. I rather play FFXIV on PC. So are they singling out PC user base with remote play? Thats harsh even for Yoshi-san to suggest. Maybe it will change, I can only hope.

Not sure I completely understand what you are saying, but here's how it works. The game isn't played on the Vita itself. The Vita is just used as the monitor/controller over WiFi connected to the PS4. It's actually available for some PS3 games now I believe. Now I would actually be surprised if Sony didn't somehow integrate this kind of thing into some of it's higher end notebooks and desktops in the future, but it's a Sony-specific technology and they don't want to move gamers away from the PlayStation.

What I'd hope is that this would not require the PS4 to have control of the main television it's hooked up to. So for example, I can sit on the couch jamming with my Via as the PS4 hums along running XIV, but my husband can steal the 40" television to watch his stuff on via the PS3 or his laptop at the same time.

You'd think one 40" television would be enough for a house with four adults in it, but just wait until one person is watching Doctor Who on Netflix, while another one wants some old school quality FF6 time via PSN, while a third person finally has some free time to watch High School DXD. Smiley: lol We had to draw straws - losers went back to their computer. Doctor Who and FF6 lost so it was all demons and boobs for the next hour.

Too bad there is nothing for on the go... I do hope they work on that.

I like the idea of using the touch pad as part of the interface.. That should help over the ps3 since it is so clunky,,,

He never asked about a release time...

Off topic abit, but has been confirmed that you would have to buy the game again for PS4 if you are already on the PS3?
I've got a friend in LS who's playing on the PS3 and is curious whether he will be able to transfer to the PS4 when the time comes.

Yoshi said they would offer a discount to PS3 users if they upgrade to the PS4 version. I'm going to assume the PSN store will offer it via a code from SE. It will be easy to change over. All you do is have to download the client after that. All the data is stored on the server.
