So let's talk about another aspect of BLM: food choice!

There are quite a few food choices for us in Eorzea. I was wondering what you all have been using?

For me, spell speed and crit are important because movement is involved in almost every fight I've encountered. The faster I can get a cast off, the lower the chance I will have to move to interrupt my cast to get out of an AoE/cone attack, the better! Crit obviously amplifies your spells damage by quite a bit.

Vitality seems to be a big thing for us, having the lowest HP in the game. Having a food that boosts it at least as a secondary stat seems like it would be something we would always strive for.

How about you? What do you snack on during your adventures in Eorzea? :)

I am still having a little bit of trouble determining what is the best food we can use.

I am thinking an optimal food would be something that possess INT (none yet as far as I've seen) or something that increases crit. The next alternative would be going for determination/spell speed.

I could be wrong and would really like to get some theorycrafters in here to check the results. Spell speed is nothing too phenomenal either, actually. I think it's around 0.1 seconds per 100 spell speed. I'm running around 450 SS at the moment so 36 more spell speed is not even a half of 0.1 of a second. Not noticeable with casting lag most likely.

http://www.ffxivinfo.com/items/food.php

Here's a food list.

Important items:

Antelope Steak:
Skill Speed +8% (Max 6) Vitality +4% (Max 3) Critical Hit Rating +2% (Max 2)

Bubble Chocolate
Spell Speed +8% (Max 4) Vitality +4% (Max 2) Accuracy +2% (Max 2)

Buttons in a Blanket
Determination +4% (Max 13) Vitality +3% (Max 13) Critical Hit Rating +2% (Max 8)

Chicken and Mushrooms
Determination +8% (Max 3) Vitality +4% (Max 3) Accuracy +2% (Max 2)

Crumpet
Spell Speed +7% (Max 9) Vitality +4% (Max 6) Piety +2% (Max 2)

Dodo Omelette
Critical Hit Rating +8% (Max 5) Vitality +4% (Max 2) Determination +1

Forest Miq'abob
Determination +7% (Max 6) Vitality +4% (Max 6) Accuracy +2% (Max 4)

Pearl Chocolate
Spell Speed +8% (Max 4) Vitality +4% (Max 2) Critical Hit Rating +2% (Max 2)

Deviled Eggs
Critical Hit Rating +4% (Max 19) Vitality +3% (Max 12) Accuracy +2% (Max 8)

Apkallu Omelette
Vitality 2% (Max: 15) Accuracy 2% (Max: 9) Critical Hit Rate 3% (Max: 22) EXP Bonus: +3%

Bolded the one I think will probably end up being our 'best' for a while. Deviled Eggs are the lesser version but much easier to come by.

I have been eating Salmon Meuniere because I can afford it. Thanks for the link to the complete food list. I bolded the one I like the look of.

I am all about critical % rate up. Stack, stack, stack Crit-Up until cap at the very least. (Not sure what the cap is.)

I think the best food will depend on where you at with gear, what is the lowest stats you need to improve to balance out, considering diminishing returns.

There are great posts. Well done BLM's!

Although I am not yet 50, I've been aiming for gear pieces with critical strike on them, and using food that increases my critical strike. It just made sense to me that I would want to get the most out of each fire spell. Although I like the idea of spell speed for fights which require a lot of movement, as of yet I haven't really ran into any boss fights, up through titan at least, that I had trouble getting casts off. As of right now, I am the only one who has been able to draw threat off our tank, usually through a series of thundercloud procs mixed with some big crits, and In the few pugs I've ran with, I tend to have to back off a bit not to pull aggro, which makes me feel like whatever I'm doing is working.

My rotation at level 40 is,

thunder 2
fire 3
fire 1 till oom
transpose
recast thunder 2
blizz 1
fire 3
repeat.

If thundercloud procs, I just wait to finish casting to use the proc.

I realize I do not yet have firestarter and things are different at level 50, and I am by no means a "pro" but this is just what my experience has been so far.

Yeah usually I try to use it after casting fire 3, before spamming fire 1. I haven't created any macros yet.

Yeah I saw that, I used something similar in WoW on my Orc Rogue with blood fury, that way I didn't forget to use it all the time lol.

After examining some logs, it looks like my crit seems to hover around 10% which is within an acceptable range of other classes. So gearing for crit may be our best option.

I will post some example logs below.

IF you need any details about these parses, please ask. Many of them are from different events at different gear levels with different classes partying with me.

Now here is the question: when the FFXIV ARR dev team considered BLM, what did THEY intend us to gear for?

I honestly don't know and I don't even think they know! If you look at demagogue, you'll see spell speed. If you look at dark light, you'll see accuracy, crit, spell speed, and determination. If you look at AF2, you'll also see a mix of these stats.

So the question becomes: what do you all consider the most important secondary stat for us as BLMs?

Here is what I do know:

For coils, we need around 434 accuracy (450 or more for SMN). I believe you can obtain this easily from dark light and AF2 and food.

Spell speed seems to be something like 100 spell speed = 0.1 seconds.

Critical damage is about 10% of our damage at around 350 crit. It gets much higher with a higher crit rating. 500 seems to grant me 30%.

BLM has the lowest HP pool so vitality on the food is a big plus

This is all speculation and we would need some serious theorycrafting to prove one way or another. I do not have a reliable FC at the moment to run coils with or I would parse myself every week using different settings to look at what works and what doesn't.

Perhaps it's time for me to learn how to install the parser App and use it.

Do you have to run in windowed mode? Or do you just run it in the background and alt-tab to check it after the fight?

You can leave it running in the background. :)

The only thing is...if you're parsing boss fights, you'll need to clear the log before you engage and then manually screenshot the log, post it to paint, then save it (and label it) after the fight. It can be a pain sometimes. >_> But since it's one of the tools that allows us to examine these issues better, I'd highly encourage it.

Just thought I'd report back with some findings.

In coil, I've been sticking to deviled eggs. They're great if you need a bit of ACC like many of us will probably need (432/433). However, ACC isn't really an issue outside of the slimes in turn 1 and turn 4. I haven't gotten to test anything in turn 5 since they haven't actually had it unlocked for any reasonable amount of time! I have a feeling that you will feel the ACC penalty on Twintania, though.

I've seen many BLMs state that Apkallu Omelette is the best food we can eat. Outside of that, deviled eggs seem to be our next best option:

Deviled Eggs

Critical Hit Rating +4% (Max 19) Vitality +3% (Max 12) Accuracy +2% (Max 8)

Apkallu's in Costa on Blood Shore respawn quickly and there's enough to constantly be killing them to farm their eggs. Been doing that a bunch in downtime! Farm spot is near the Cancer boss fate location.

Deviled Eggs
Critical Hit Rating +4% (Max 19) Vitality +3% (Max 12) Accuracy +2% (Max 8)

Apkallu Omelette
Critical Hit Rate 3% (Max: 22) Vitality 2% (Max: 15) Accuracy 2% (Max: 9) EXP Bonus: +3%

I would imagine everyone has realized this by now. The % is actually a bit more important than the Max #.

You would need 750 vitality to reach the max 15 with Omelettes. You would need 600 vitality just to match the 12VIT max offered with Deviled eggs. With the Eggs you just need 400 Vit to hit the max of 12.

Same thing for Critical Hit. You need about 500 Crit to hit the max 19 with Eggs, or a whooping 734 crit to hit the max 22 with Omelettes.

I don't even know if the stats caps allow you to get the most out of Omelettes at this point.

So it's Deviled eggs all day, everyday for me.

You're right, Gnu. It's currently not effective to eat the 2 star cooking stuff. Kind of messed up but that's what we get to deal with. :X

On a side note, deviled eggs have served marvelously for coil. Good call on your part early on. :P
