Don't forget cross class skills. Depending on requirements, you can take skills from other classes and 'fine tune' your favorite. If you feel something is lacking in a certain aspect, look into creating your own. :)

SE made an interesting experiment here; every dingle class has at least one CC skill.
Although, generally speaking, DDs are too stupid to understand their value and rarely use them.

The line of thought behind that decision may have been that a pure CC class would be
hard to balance for both solo and PvP content.

Was that really necessary?

it's pretty much been accepted practice in mmos for awhile now to give all classes some CC. there was no experimenting done.

Black mage has access to sleep AoE and lethargy just like THM. What THM doesn't have is an AoE bind to boot.

If I had to pick a CC class, it would easily be BLM. In fact, BLM seems to have been given a few tools from RDM's repertoire. Blizzard functions something like gravity did as well. Blizzard II functions as a bind.

Just keep in mind the CC builds immunities even on fodder. First use will likely go unresisted, second will be half duration, third will be 1/4th, and fourth may either reset to full or render the mob completely immune depending. As well, you'll have some mobs completely immune to things like sleep or bind, in part to likely teach tanks and healers how to handle multiple adds at once.

Anyway, THM/BLM is probably close to the spirit of the backline RDM some FFXIers loved. XIV's Convert is not XI's Convert, though, and Swiftcast is certainly superior to Spontaneity because of the recast difference. Lethargy is too restrictive on the recast to really be considered a reliable Slow, though, and the job has now Blind or Paralyze to flesh out the distinction.

I can't speak whether it was necessary or not, but in context with this, it's certainly applicable.

**** no. Just an empirical observation.
There's a great thread about this in the "other battle systems" section of the official forum.
I think it's called "Parsed facts vs ecological validity" or something.
The author is really smart; unluckily he got temporarily banned (tee hee hee!).

That's called Diminishing Returns. An example of an immunity in the game is when you stun a mob, it becomes immune to further stuns for a set amount of time.

Black Mage and Thm both have aoe Sleep. If that isn't crowd control, I don't know what is.
