You probably won't believe me/him, but I have a friend whose account was stolen in FFXI and moved to another server, stripped, and turned into a RMT shiller before the task force got involved. At the time, he didn't use a token, which was his mistake. He never gave his info out, since none of his real life friends played, and me and another person were his only real contacts in-game.

Hey everybody.

I guess most of you have allready see the goldsellers Spam and maybe some farm Bots to. I was lvling my mine this Weekend a bit. Hoping that i can make some Money from selling ressources or craftet stuff. But the Prices on Excalibur are so Cheap is most times not even worth putting stuff into the AH. Also i have sawd on Saturday first time the Reason while mining for it.

I sawt alone on my mining place 8 Bots around the mined all automaticly, but more worst they used a Kind of teleport hack that save them the complet Walking time and avoid all Mobs on there way to the next spots. I have reportet them all and descriped the way they act as good as i could but i got no Answer so far.

Thats real ******* me of because this bots are overfloating the AH. Ok sure on one way its good because you get the mats real cheap. But if you try to make some Money with from it, its nearly usless because i get faster Gill from dooing fates or Leaves.

I also couldnt find a Statement from SE about this. MAybe its just me but if SE dont stop this i think it will break the game economy and the fun for all miners who collecting ressources by themself to make a bit Profit and so on.

Same here, Pravus of Seraph (at the time. He's on Bismarck now.) He didn't have a token and picked up a trojan from FFXI-Atlas or one of the other sites when they were all getting infected with bad ads. Got hacked right in the middle of tanking Gulool Ja Ja. His character suddenly disconnected, then when it reconnected his girlfriend started yelling that it wasn't him that logged back on. They changed his password before he could wrest control back, logged in, and warped right out of the fight. (With our main tank down and our main WHM freaking out, needless to say we all wiped.)

The account was on the loose for less than two hours before the GMs got it but they stripped him of 20 million gil, that much again in ancient currency, and transferred everything off the char that wasn't rare/ex. He had to apply for a full character restore - which took three months - and they ended up rolling him back a few days and he lost a little bit of stuff, but no biggie at the time compared to everything else he got back, like his stage 4 Apocalypse.

The tokens were relatively new and cost $10 at the time, but they absolutely would have saved him months of grief. Smiley: frown

I believe the app version of the tokens is free.

This.

If you're going to play an MMO that *you know* you're going to put some serious hours in then you need an authenticator of some sorts, especially if you're too lazy to come up with a separate password. In this day and age if you can't be bothered to at least use a token, a mobile app, or a unique password for the game you quite frankly you deserve whatever happens.

The easiest way to combat it is to not only not purchase gil, but rally against those who do. Too many people are quick to turn a blind eye at the real issue, that's the people buying it, not the one's selling it. To just sit back and expect SE to come swooping in on their white horse and save the game from the players themselves is just as it sounds, fantastical. I've excluded people from my friend list and actually belonged to a guild in the past that has kicked a few members for purchasing currency. And they had the audacity to brag about it, because they are used to the norm of people not saying anything, or worse yet, holding their hand out. That is all. :)

Bots arent why the economy is so low. The economy is low because everyone and their mother can make their own stuff and sell it. When you have 30 different people selling silver ore, all undercutting each other you arent going to make alot of money. Thats not a RMT issue, as they are hurt by this. No its a lack of excess gil in game coupled with a lack of need for crafted items. BTW Im on excalibur too.

Pretty much every in-game spammer right now is a hacked account. I mean, you can tell just from their lore-appropriate names.

These RMT sure aren't buying their own copies of the game.

You can get a lore-appropriate name that's also unique with just a button press at character creation.

Yeah well, good luck with that one... ^.^/

Why? Do you think it inconceivable that SE's security could be breached, bypassing even authenticators? Or are you simply under the delusion that you are somehow special and nothing could possibly happen to you?

Of course many cases of stolen accounts are the owner's fault. But do not assume that this is 100% of all cases. And don't assume that because you have some technical knowledge that everyone should automatically undertand things the way you do.

I also dont feel sorry for anyone that got their account banned, its not hard to keep your account protected:

•Use the security token
•Don't use the same login and password that you do for every other game. Blizzard and Rift both have had every account and password stolen.
•Don't buy gil
•Don't pay to power level
•Don't go to any site affiliated with them
•Don't click blindly on email links
•Keep your computer protected, use antivirus, check for maleware and spyware often
•If your going to steal movies and music then do some research on how to protect yourself
•Don't give your login info to anyone, no one will ask for your password that works for SE
And for god's sake stay away from the Chinese **** sites. They are loaded with viruses and key loggers
•Keep your're gaming computer seperate from all your other stuff, I rarely even open a web browser on my gaming computer

Man, I was right there with you until the bolded part, just don't have that kind of self control.....LOL

I dont want to have to use a token. It's a lot of extra trouble logging in, especially since you have to input it each time the server is full and you have to relog just to get the world-list during weekends.

I shouldnt be the only one keeping my account safe. SE should make it harder for them to login from lets say... the other side of the world... when clearly i do not play from that location... atleast not let them login from there without an e-mail confirmation or something.

I dont use the same password twice on any website, i have an second email account just for FFXI and FFXIV. Plus i dont use my gaming computer to look for ****. Not to mention i dont login on my FFXI(V) email from anywhere other than my gaming rig either. If that isnt enough to not get hacked, SE is doing something terribly wrong.

I've reported every single RMT so far i've seen shouting or gotten a tell from, three days later, most of them are still around. It's gotten to the point where i'm slowly giving up. Which is probably exactly what they want, but still. SE really needs to step up and stop the blatant RMT abuse in this game before it ruins it. Not economy wise, but fun wise. Cant even get into town now without having to blacklist yet another 2-3 people first.

I remember this one little corner of the Dunes, just past the tangled tree roots, where the patrol goblins didn't aggro. Every time I went by that spot there was this writhing pile of fishbots, one directly on top of the other, all flicking their rods around at different times. Because they were all different races, as well, you'd have some rods near the ground, some high into the air, the names totally mashed together to form this indistinguishable conglomerate. They looked like a hakutaku named ▒░▒░▒▒. Smiley: grin

And have you gotten hacked?

The security token isn't absolutely necessary if you follow the practices that you do, but not everyone cares to go to those extremes. Two factor authentication in the form of a security token gives the masses 99%+ assurance that their account is secure.

Keep in mind, it can increase your security also. Call it a safety net. No matter how careful you are, sometimes sh%t happens.

I do agree with you on the IP check, but I was under the impression that they had implemented this to some extent, locking accounts temporarily.

I reported them, shouted their names, and told me LS.

Not sure who else reported them, but I figured if I got their names and locations out that others would stop by and see, probably report as well.

While I agree that everyone should be either buying a security token or using the app, and don't feel sorry for those who choose not to use it and then get banned; I do not understand or agree with the "they deserve to be hacked/banned" mentality. Nobody deserves to be hacked. It's a sh*tty situation and a pain the go through, especially after you just dropped your money on the game.

I myself use the phone app on my iPhone, and it works great. The added inconvenience of an extra 30 seconds to open the app and type in a 6 digit password is nothing compared to the inconvenience of losing all of your progress. I discussed this with my free company, but RMTs biggest profit comes off of us, the users, because they get all the time we put in to our characters and turn it into their money in a matter of seconds.

For most people this would be true but what about the the ones who work on the road and login from different locations ? The security token takes care of this problem simply because you do have to use it to login.

I always get a kick out of people who say this :p I don't work in the IT industry but I do read up on it to educate myself about the dangers on the web. Any site can be compromised if the site security isn't kept up to date. I believe even Allakhazam was hit at one time with a Iframe virus from a third partry advertiser, so **** sites are not the only way to get infected.

While you have the luxury of having a dedicated pc for gaming keep in mind most people do not and use theirs from gaming to online shopping. These people are more likely to get hacked so a security token is a good investment to keep their accounts safe.

Kaolian's post on computer security is a good thing to read for those who want to help themselves lessen the likelyhood of getting hacked. http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?forum=25&mid=130025123118577481

In a way, I'm kind of glad to see this kind of thing happening.

The way I see it is this:
Player uses RMT website
Player gets hacked by RMT
hacked player gets used by RMT
RMT gets banned by SE (eventually)

The whole web gets taken out in one blow.

Moral is: Don't buy gil.

Chances are, it's the same RMT accounts, deleting and remaking a character with a different name so they can get around people /blacklist'ing them. I've removed the first few RMT from earlier in the week from my BL and I don't get /t from them anymore, or see them in cities.

Once you get a hacked account, you can make up to 39 other characters to advertise on any server you want, however, and you might not care what they're called.

If you were a serious FFXI players you were very aware of bots and hacks, they suck but they don't kill a game.

All that really happens is some bot makers get very rich.

Look, I hate to be a Debby Downer here but hacks, bots and RMT are here to stay. RMT have been in every game I've played on day one. ****, they are often in the beta selling their wares knowing full well that all the character data is going to be deleted come release. Hacks and bots are usually only a couple days into a new game. The basic ones anyway. The more advanced ones come about in a week or two.

This isn't a problem with FFXIV. Its a "problem" with the industry in general. "Why do you have problem in quotation marks?" I'm glad you asked.

While RMT players are annoying, they generally aren't terribly smart. Camping your mobs? Pull them quicker. (In every game I've played with RMT running around, they rarely have a good grasp of game mechanics. You should. Use it to your advantage.) Undercutting your prices? Diversify and sell other things. Or undercut them back. If they don't make enough to justify making items, they'll stop.

Bots? Call a GM. Ok, granted SE has never been terribly good with dealing with them. Hacks? Again call a GM and hope for the best. Ideally SE will get on the ball and enable their GMs to do a better job.

These problems are here to stay. Just like traffic and dubstep. You can get frustrated by them, are you can do what you can do to minimize them.

This is one of the worst posts I've ever read on these forums. You're a very arrogant, mean person. I'm sorry you got picked on so much growing up.

You think this is arrogant? Apparently you haven't read many post on this site than if you think mine is the worst. Anyone who has read ANY of my previous post knows i'm not some troll on here looking to flame people. My post is valid, little kiddies on the internet need to grow up and take responsibility, if you have a problem with that, fine, but try to show a little maturity rather then insulting my rough childhood that you obviously know nothing about.

Because calling everyone with a compromised account stupid is mature?

For those complaining about the number of spots on your blist, start reporting them and then remove them from your blist. It's super easy to report people, I did a few last night myself.

Let's say that someone's account is stolen because they use the same password on some other website and that site got hacked and all the password stolen. That's a very common way for an account to be compromised. Let's say that they are not a security expert know-it-all. Let's say, for example, that they are someone who don't use computers all that much, and are as such not really aware that using the same password was a security risk.

That person, in your opinion, is stupid? Because you are insulting a lot of people. Just saying.
