Free Companies and Grand CompaniesFollow

So I am being a touch lazy here, admittedly.

I was considering joining a Free Company, as my fiancee and I are likely stuck on Phoenix unless they offer a free transfer (then I'm Ultros-bound). I was fishing in Limsa Lominsa when I saw a shout come up for one. I went and checked their list on Lodestone, and it says they are a trusted member of Maelstrom, which makes sense.

Now, I haven't really looked into a GCs yet, but I recall that there was not a ton of difference in what we could access in the beta. Now that people are 50, do the GC's break down to be better for one job or another? And if I join a FC that is with one GC, does that mean that I would be unable to join a different GC? I'd assume no, but then no idea. We've not made it far enough in the story to even have GC access yet (hence why no real research). But since there are so many of you lovely people running about here, I'd love to hear what you guys have to say :D

Plus as stated being lazy, give me a break, I just did 17 levels of armorer and 9 of fishing, not to mention all the mining to level armorer. Oh and farmed and crafted leather too, only a couple levels there....

I'm not entirely sure, but i don't think FC's and GC's are tied together like that. I'm pretty sure an FC can be made up of people from all 3 of the GC's. I do think that you are stuck with whatever GC you choose. Also, i think it was discussed that the different GC gear has better stats for different classes. For instance, the Maelstrom has good mrd gear, whereas the Gridinia GC has good caster gear. I hope someone can elaborate a little better on this.

You can change GC once you are far enough through there questline. It was stated in a forum post by se on official forums.

A Free Company that's tied to a Grand Company just means you buy the FC bonuses from that GC building. I really don't know why they did that and it's not that well explained.

You can join a FC and still be whatever GC you want to be.

That's true but what that means is when you're lvl 50 and have competed presumably all the story quests and are second to highest rank. So while you can change, it's best to think about which GC you would like to max out first as I want to change my GC but still can't.

Thanks for the replies all. Still on the fence, saw another today, but both are from Limsa. I figured that the GCs would likely break down to focusing on the jobs from those cities. Split between Ul'dah and Gridania in that case. I get this feeling that I am not escaping the healer role this time, so Gridania might just be the better choice. I guess I can join one of the FCs to see their benefits. I hate hopping about though, but since I know absolutely no one on Phoenix, I am just greedily looking at wha they could possibly offer.

The FS's are primarily a social club for chatting, and finding parties for dungeon runs, and raids.
There are some really cool/funny people in my FC. JOin one, and enjoy the added entertainment, and depth only they can provide.

The main differences are just cosmetic. You get different looking but similar-statted gear from all companies.

As far was what City they are aligned with, I have yet to see this have any effect at all.
