I just hit 50 and I'm looking for tips on how to gear up. I heard that I should complete the main story then grind instances to collect tomes for Darklight Gear. I was wondering how Darklight compares to level 50 dungeon drops. Also, I see people mention GC weapons. Are these worth getting? How do they compare to crafted level 50 weapons? Thanks in advance for any comments.

I went to xivdb.com, and did a search for level 50 gear for my jobs to see the stats on the available gear. From what I can see, Darklight is just a start for the most part. It requires philosophy tomes, which you can start collecting at 41 in Stone Vigil. The better gear requires mythology tomes, which I am guessing comes from the Keep and such.

EDIT: There's also the HM primal gear, but from what I understand, you at least need a good collection of Darklight and such before you can get those.

First you should start with running Wanderers Palace to get lvl 55 drops.

Next run Amdapoor Keep for lvl 60 drops. Careful, it is brutal if you are just starting out. You can't really get the good stuff from the GC until you get the GC quest to beat this stage, and then you unlock the ability to buy some decent stuff that could replace the wanderers gear.

You can run Amdapoor keep to get tomes of philosophy and mythology, and lvl 60 gear.
You can run Castrum Meridianum and Praetorium speed runs to get 100 tomestones of mythology.
You can run ifrit hm and garuda hm for a shot at the weapons. You also get a small amount of myth and philosophy tomestones from these fights. Ifrit can be run in AF armor with your stone vigil weapon, but for Garuda try to gear at least half of your stuff to 55 or 60 and have either ifrit weapon or GC weapon (unlocked after 1st AK run).

Use the tomestones of philosophy to buy lvl 70 darklight gear from Auriel in Mor Dhona. She is near the main crystal in a shop. Try to pick gear that will best enhance your performance for the lowest cost. The def boost from the armor pieces is highly necessary.

Save mythology tomes to buy lvl 90 hero gear or AF+1 gear. The myth tomes are capped at 300 per week, so these will take time to obtain.

And start your relic weapon quest. You will have to beat chimera and hydra, then ifrit hm, garuda hm, and finally titan hm to compelte this quest. Then you need 900 tomes of philosophy and to get relic +1 you need tomes of mythology.

Most titan parties will need you in a combination of 90, 70, and 60 level weapons and armor. Try to get all 70s, but I think as long as the average level of your weapons and armor is higher than 60 you should be ok for titan. As long as you have enough hp to survive a plume (very near 3200). Not to say you couldnt run the battle if you were in AF armor and were super awesome at anticipation and dodging, but the survivability allows for a little breathability.

All learned the hard way.

Edit - Also, crafted hq lvl 48-50 jewelry with slotted materia can boost you through ak and wanderers, and also the speed runs in castrum meridianum and praetorium.

The crafted two star weapons that are on par with the ak and darklight gear (and sometimes better) usually require 6-9 of a material that cost 125 philosophy tomes each (or 30k if you find a seller) and then you need to have a certain level of control on your crafter to make it. This usually requres level 50 with job specific hq gear slotted with control and craftsmanship materia. And that is the harder route (but possible if crafting and buying/selling is more your thing)

You dont really need to run wanderers at all.

The darklight gear is the best and easiest things to obtain when you hit 50.
Run CM over and ovr for 100 philosophy tomes per run.

Get an ifrit weapon because it is also easy to get and better than the GC weapon and anyhing you will get from wanderers.

When your geared enough, start runnig amdapor keep as this is the best way to get mythology tomes.

Wanderers is really unneccesary as is anyhin from the GC because they are outclassed by easily attainable darklight and ifrit weapons. Wanderers is fun though so do run ot at least once.

Yeah, I was going to say, but Wanderer's is really fun, and its a cakewalk. I did get a darklight shield off of the tonberry king I wore right up unitl yesterday...

Don't queue for AK right away. Run Castrum till you have some darklight and then queue for AK. The drops from AK are nice intermediates and some might even stick with you depending on your job. You also obtain mythology from AK which nets you AF2: greater than even allagan on certain slots. Chances are if you queue for AK right away, you're going to run into some pricks who demand you have relic+1 and full allagan upon entering. It's not a pleasant experience.

Run Castrum till your eyes bleed out. If they are bleeding out, run it some more. You can never have enough Castrum. When you have some DL gear, queue AK. After farming AK for a while, try out Praetorium for a change of pace. It's a boss-heavy instance so the gear you've been working on will help you here.

You need a ton of philosophy tomes to obtain darklight and crafted gear. Technically, you don't need the tomes to make the crafted gear but it'll be cheaper for you in the long run!

That sounds about right. 9 Aqueous whetsones, lol. My question is how I force fuse more than the # of slots on the item. Heard it has something to to with carp, but I checked the avialable skills and it doesnt appear to be present.

Praetorium can be faster...but sort of less "fun" and higher likelihood of random bad DF players wiping you. I usually go with speed run shouts to prae and then do DF CM to break the monotony.

Also, don't ignore AK at all.

My problem with Prae is the inconsiderate PC majority who do not care to realize (or just simply do not care) that PS3 players have a load time on cutscenes before we are allowed to skip. So many times I have been shut out of boss fights this way. I would much rather go CM.

I still do AK lots more than CM, mainly to get gears for all jobs. It will take a looong time to do that with DL, and looong x looong time to do that with AF2.

A fresh 50 should not be doing AK. At all. You can bet that the ilevel requirement introduced in the next patch will not allow people who have just hit 50 to enter AK.

CM is also best for a fresh 50. Cannons do not care what kind of gear you have: Ultima does. While a fresh 50 is capable of killing Ultima, the point of the run is speed.

Remember: this is for a question about "fresh 50". Like you, I run Praetorium because it's much faster. I farm AK when I get tired of Prae or CM because it's pretty fast with a decent group and a nice change of pace. This is with groups that already have the gear to make it a speed run, though.

Perfect.

ok it sounded like you were saying flat out, "ignore AK", not "do WP/CM until you have some gear then do AK" and yes you got me; I completely forgot about the fresh 50 thing shortly after that.

Agree with all your points, although it is totally possible to do AK with not much more than AF and GC weapon. Its just far from ideal. If anything, it will be ilvl55 requirement /shrug. I did it with AF/DL accessories and GC weapon, and it was pretty brutal.

That is true if you are tank or healer, but DPS needs to be able to deal a certain amount of damage in a certain amount of time since the demon wall will eventually push you into the purple and kill you. And you cant get that GC weapon without first beating Amdapoor Keep to begin with. My solution is to get ifrit weapon if you are DD running AK for the first time, and try to pair with another DD that can deal some significant damage to get you through your first run to get your GC weapon (if you don't have ifrit by then).

Right i forgot about that..that was the whole reason i wanted to get through AK, for the weapon....which means i completed AK on my gimpy DRG with an lol 2xmeld Hart Guisarme...point is it can be done. I don't recall what gear the other DD had, but chances are i was probably carried to some extent. Incidentally you can survive for some time in the purple.

No I just meant don't queue for it right off the bat. I'll edit my post to clarify. I agree that AK can be done in full AF and GC since that's what I used on my first clear (minus the GC weapon because...well...you had to run AK first before obtaining it). I had really nice people who were patient and explained the fights, though.

I wouldn't recommend it to a fresh 50 given the current environment. "WHAT? NO RELIC?! I'M OUTTA HERE." -A majority of AK DFs I've been in

Yeah, ironically I'd rather have a "hard" gear level/check in game telling me I can't participate rather than a bunch of jerks.

The gear check is coming in 2.1 correct?

Same, I luckily had a couple people from my FC basically hold my hand through it. (and yeah, I didn't do it with GC weapon first time, obv. clearly my memory is working at around the same level as my reading comprehension as far as this thread goes)

Yes, definitely not recommending new AF 50s try this.

I was in a titan pug yesterday early on and the tank and a dps were in the same fc and parsing everyone up until the end of the heart phase. I was told that with my garuda weapon I was dealing more damage than relics. The rotation is definitely working. I dont believe that a relic makes you a good player.

On a lighter note, my awesome FC ZAM consisting of Duma, Jy, Autumn, Amorok, Don (think Don was in there, maybe not) and several other folks who at this time I thank but can't recall their names got me throguh my first titan, ironically while I was on my back, lol. This was our 5th or 6th try I think, at that point I was way past my gaming quota so I was playing with my volume down watching "This is 40" on the other tv with my wife while my 4 year old was bouncing around throwing legos at my head. Somehow through all that I did not get distracted. The kid even landed on the remote to the TV in one of her bounce-fests and turned it completely off. I had a crap my pants moment, grabbed the remote, turned it back on to see that I was still alive. I was not mad, but dang kid, really? Anyway through all of that I was doing well, generally the last person up until tank died and titan walked over to the squishy black mage and smashed me across the face. Did well those runs. But we lost. Then, we get to the winning run.

It starts. I'm thinking that it will be like the last one. I'm doing fantastic all the way through heart, do not get hit, kicking ****, all the way up until I get stuck in the second gaol in the heart phase. Then, they dont break me out in time and the big one hits. Boom, 3400 hp to 0 like that. Then, strangely enough, everybody meshes together. Dodging everything, no deaths, perfect execution, whm awesome as always, sch doing great, everyone kicking ****. No rez because they know its a waste of time since raising off of titan is harder than crab fishing in January. Then the other blm, who really did well to get to that point since he was pretty undergeared and had 2900 hp, finally bites it. Still they keep going. They got all the way down to the end, got the lb3. I'm thinking, ok, they are gonna whm lb3 rez soon to pick me up. But a dd says, "I can kill it!", and gives it a go. Drops him from ~4% to 1%. I'm thinking oh, no, but they are holding it together. Then, as I am laying dead on the floor for 3/4 of the match, with the volume down watching a movie with my wife, and my kid still throwing crap at my head, I finally beat titan.

Irony is ****. Smiley: laugh

Haha, grats man! Great story. Sounded a bit like you were playing at my house. Did I mention I have 8 year old triplets? That's a lot of legos flying through the air at any given moment.

We have one rule in our house an that is don't mess with the controller. Instead, my kids like to trip over the mouse cord which is pretty awesome. Surprised the USB connecter hasn't snapped off by now.

BTW, if you are trying to fish for crabs in January you can always try the strip club.

Anyway, just hit 50 last night, so I'm bumpin' this thread.

ok it sounded like you were saying flat out, "ignore AK", not "do WP/CM until you have some gear then do AK" and yes you got me; I completely forgot about the fresh 50 thing shortly after that.

Agree with all your points, although it is totally possible to do AK with not much more than AF and GC weapon. Its just far from ideal. If anything, it will be ilvl55 requirement /shrug. I did it with AF/DL accessories and GC weapon, and it was pretty brutal.

Boy that was a long story.

BUT CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

As I was gearing up, I would parse myself against many players (including ones with relics). Some beat me outright. They outplayed me and were skilled at their job.

When I did Titan for the first few times in AK gear and DL accessories (just Ifrit's weapon), I would easily outparse just about anyone barring another BLM or a SMN with their buggy DoTs in the parse.

Recently I was helping my FC do Titan again. They had attempted this previously for around 3 hours before they called me in. One of the DPS with a relic opted to sit out while we got another healer because he ate a landslide every single time. We had around 4 relic users in that party and 3 healers. We wiped twice. One of the times we did wipe, Titan was sitting at 0.1% HP. Only the tank was left alive. He died. We did it again. Same thing happened. Except, the tank managed to beat Titan with the rest of us dead. Truly epic moment!

Point is, I'm kind of tired of people hiding behind gear for Titan. It does depend on gear to a certain extent but it is often exaggerated. It allows you to make fewer mistakes but if you aren't making mistakes to begin with, it's just a crutch. There's a certain monk in my FC who has a relic and he eats landslide every time. Every time I parse him, he's bottom of the DPS yet he insists that you must have full DL and Garuda's weapon before attempting Titan. That gear isn't exactly helping him, is it?

So I log on today and low and behold, guess who PMs me asking me for help with Titan? Yes, the MNK. I mean, if you have gotten through Titan once and have a relic weapon, one would assume you could help others get through it as well without much difficulty. Instead, I am usually called upon to hold their hands through Titan because they can't do something as simple as viewing this:

and reading it off in Vent.

Thank the lord for wireless controllers. But when you have a kid who craves attention 24/7 combined with a wireless keyboard, PS3 controller, TV remote, and Cable remote, something is bound to get sat or stepped on at some point Smiley: smile

Wish I had the capability to get on vent. Instead, I've played it enough now can play the thing with the volume down. As long as you remember one thing you will survive. Its validated in your .gif above. Anticipate it, every time, it always throws the team off guard and after this moment I expect to see half the team wipe.

Landslide will follow bombs, every time. Pre-heart, it is after explosion, when you are running to the area where it just exploded. Post-heart, landslide will hit just as the first bombs explode, so you have to dodge the landslide without getting in a bomb radius and think about where to run all at the same time. Anticipate this and you will succeed.
