I was thinking that DX11 was backwards compatible with 9, meaning you'd only need one version on your system. However, the Internets suggest otherwise: it seems that if a game requires DX9c, you have to install it or the game won't run. Certainly my system has both 9 and 11 on it and everything runs just like it's supposed to. You won't be "downgrading" if you install 9. Both versions will co-exist and games that have DX11 capability will run in DX11 as long as you make the appropriate selection in that game's configuration screen.

And, supposedly, FFXIV will have a DX11 client at some point in the not-too-distant future. No idea about timeframe or what fancy features DX11 will bring (I mean tessellation etc.) but I would imagine that once the PS4 version is released and the game is completely stable, they'll start pushing the DX11 version for release. Probably wouldn't happen for at least six months, I'd expect. Just my opinion, though.

Yeah six months from the initial release was the ETA for the DX11 client on high end systems. Considering it's only a DX9 game it still looks totally fantastic.

Absolutely /agree with this. I'm amazed at how nice it looks. DX11 will be some icing on the cake but, yeah, it's quite pretty right now.

ok i got a benchmark scroe of 9000+ on maximum on which is considerede extremely high.. and ths iis on a laptop btw.

however i noticed when running teh benchmark and after it ended I could hear my fan blowing loud and when i put my han don th eback of teh laptop I felt hot air coming out. evenm after exiting the benchmark it was still doing that.. only after i closed the laptop (putting it in sleep) then waking it back up again did teh fan go back to beng quiet.. i hear no noise at all when Im doing something like web browsing.

Sooo is a fan being loud and blowing hot air on a laptop normal for gaming or will playing ffxiv on max setting be an issue because of heat? I mean my ps3 gets loud and hot constamtly and it still works fine 3 years later. dunno if a plaptop is at "tough" though lol After all Ive never had a console overheat in my life yet Ive seen a latop that wa sso busted it could even make it to the windows desktop before turningf off (im guesisng due to over heating) but that laptop was old and probably didnt cost 3k

WIll i have to worry about that with thi slaptop? will playing on max settings for exteneded hours be safe? or shoudl i stick to medium and or invest in an external cooling device?

XIV is hard on processors even when you have a good system. My fairly new i7 4770K gets up to 60C during a long session (really need to swap out the stock Intel heat sink, just haven't got around to it yet.) And that's in a gaming desktop with good ventilation.

I'd invest in an external cooling device regardless of what settings you plan on. Even the best gaming laptop is susceptible to being cooked to death by a graphically intense game.

Im using the 1st gen i7 with gtx 780m graphics and IC diamond thermal paste/compound. can you suggest a good cheap external fan for a 17.3in laptop? I was looking at this one but dunno if it supports 17.3 in or not

Go to Microsoft and download the directx 9.0c redistributable. It WON'T "replace" directx 11, but it will help you when you are playing directx 9 games.

The width of it is 17.5 inches soooooo I think that's about the largest it could support.

Some people have short memories about Square and promised DX engine upgrades.

ok i ran 3 benchmarks while watching speedfan under the following setting and got the following temps

Maximum settings (for high end PCs only) in Windowed mode. and considering im on a laptop i probably shouldnt be using that setting right? here are the results:

GPU : 70c
Temp1: 60c

then again on max settings but this time in full screen mode:L

GPU: 80c
temp1: 60c

then one last time this time the settings were set to "High (Laptop)" and in full screen mode:

GPU: 76c
temp1: 62c
core1: 40c

and yes all those had the fire symbol.. SO should i be worried? Is that TOO hot? (as in damaging hot)? I mean Ive heard of ppl getting up to 90C on their fans. If so what kinda laptop cooling pad or cooling system period would help bring those temps down a bit?

That's warm, but it's not quite "egads it's going to catch on fire" hot yet. I've heard of some GPUs getting upwards of 85C during gaming sessions.

Laptops suffer from a lack of airflow due to their confined spaces. They don't have a lot of room inside. They do have the usual heatsink + fan assembly, just greatly compressed in size. So you want a laptop cooling pad that has good suction, to force more air to flow through the body of the laptop itself.

ok well another thing a read about cooling pads say theyre useless and do nothing because the laptop sits on top of it yet there are no vents on the bottom of a laptop all the vents are on the sides or back so a fan from the cooling pad blowing air on the bottom of the laptop where there is no vent instead of on the back or sides where there IS vents isnt helping at all. What could you say about that?

It depends on the laptop. Some of them do, in fact, have vents on the bottom as well as the side.

If yours doesn't then there you go.

so then just to clarify youre saying you agree that blowing a fan onto the bottom of a laptop that DOESNT have vents on the bottom is 100% useless?

Feel the underside of the chassis during/after a gaming session. If it is not warm/hot to the touch, the case is not acting as a heat sink, and the fan will do no good.

I have a laptop that does have vents on the bottom, and I use a cookie cooling rack similar to this to allow a bit more circulation:
