It suddenly struck me today that one of the most common and lucrative things I did in FFXI was gardening, it then struck my that we're getting housing back. I know many people do not like drawing comparisons to FFXI - which I understand - but I also think there is no harm in repeating something that worked well, and I think Gardening would check that box. On the off-chance I checked if any seedkin dropped bulbs and they don't, it could always be added in though!

I don't know if it'll work for current content available, but as a possible addition to new grows. Botanist pretty much has the market cornered. What could you think you'd grow in this garden that isn't currently already harvested as a bot in the zones?

And as an off note.. Bubba HoTep rules.

I'm not actually sure, I guess I didn't think it through properly being caught reminiscing! In XI I used it for crystals and darksteel ores, I guess it would have to come with new content and plant specific items - perhaps linked to the Chocobo breeding they are planning to introduce? Didn't you need to feed them different types greens to develop different abilities such as speed, stamina, etc?

Good point, it would have to have a totally separate yield than from Botanist yields. That in itself would mean it would have to be a new DoL class. That is more thinking about then I care to do when thinking of possible new game mechanics, so I'll stop there.

I think it could fit under Botanist. Could be like a mini game, FF farmville....

On a more realistic note, I loved the early farming aspect of FFXI. Though it became something I didn't tend much too once you no longer could make money from it.

Actually Gardening is coming at some point with Housing. I don't believe it will be available when housing is released. But Yoshi had made comments back when he first introduced housing that gardening was something they wanted to be in with it.

I'm ready for gardening, it's how I supported myself through XI.

Botany already covers this in my opinion. If any gardening needs to be in FFXIV, maybe it should be as a botany spawn point around the house.

It would be interesting if they were able to expand the idea of Gardening to create house-related activities that made use of all of the DoL classes, actually.

Fisher is obvious -- aquariums and pools! And fishing trophies of the biggest catches.

But I'm at a loss how mining could contribute. Create/maintain a crystal feng shui for the house?

well, it seems they are wanting to cater to the lowest common denominator (super casual players) And i dont know if that gardening system was very casual... i mean having to log in and water your plants and harvesting them on certain days etc. haha. it was kinda demanding! but it was one of my favorite things about FFXI and i think about it a lot, it would be SO AMAZING if they put this into ffxiv... lets hope so!!! :)

edit:

I was into gardening in a very minor way in XI...I'd forget to give them crystals etc. I was too busy out digging up the world with my chocobo.
Top of my wish list is digging. Since we're in early days with the game, I'm assuming the dev team has a wish list too, so they both could come.

We need another way to generate shards. Gardening would be perfect.

There was a F2P game I played where players had an area they could farm. You could then visit friends' farms and help remove pests, weeds, or even revive crops that had been left to harvest for too long. You'd have the first two happen at your farm, too, but couldn't revive your own stuff. Anyway, those actions gave you farm EXP, and as that leveled, you got more land plots and could buy better crops to plant. In XIV's case, I could see shards being a good fit as potential crop. The game also allowed cash and EXP, but I could see some disliking that notion. Personally, I don't want to see farming exclusive loot as it risks becoming a pressured activity, then, especially if time sensitive like XI's was.
