I didn't download their test program, not sure about that. Just do the command prompt thing lower on the page.

Is this a "where do I point my DDOS botnet" kind of question?

I guess you could also /netstat -a if you wanted to.

One thing to add to this, you may want to try a trace route, that can give you an idea if there is possibly a routing issue that is causing problems. If you have a long ping, try doing tracert <servername> at a command prompt. You should get a result like this (I trimmed the first few hops on purpose)

D:\>tracert www.google.com

Tracing route to www.google.com [74.125.225.112]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

...
  8 55 ms 55 ms 50 ms 208.47.121.146
  9 59 ms 48 ms 60 ms 209.85.254.120
 10 13 ms 12 ms 12 ms 209.85.240.150
 11 25 ms 25 ms 25 ms ord08s08-in-f16.1e100.net [74.125.225.112]

Trace complete.

If this is about the recent 90k error waging war on several of us on various worlds, you will not be able to fix it on your end.

Thanks, everyone. Smiley: nod

I wanted to do a trace route because I wanted to see where the problem with my latency is. I live in Thailand and play on Ultros. My friend also lives in the same country but he's getting only R400-500 while I'm getting anywhere between R500-4000 while playing (in the 2-3k range most of the time while in a dungeon).

Ok, I just did a trace route to the NA server IP address. Once it leaves my country, ping is mostly anywhere between 300-400ms. The highest ping was 411ms, when it was going through New York. This is really weird as I'm always getting Receiving latency in the thousands while playing, and the lag is making me unable to get out of AoE, which is really annoying.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

I have the same issue and I live in america. SE insists its an issue with our ISP's throttling the speed.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with my isp and they walked me through un blocking it from my router, but i still sit at 400s/3000r and it is stupid hard to dodge ae's and i hate getting called a noob cause i die to easy stuff. It has made it completly impossible for me to do end game because i can't dodge.

I can't stay logged into the game for 10 min without 90k screaming for me to get off its lawn.

Yeah, my next thought would be if your ISP is throttling the type of communication that SE is using. You could use something like wireshark to look into that, but that tool can be very confusing and difficult to understand if you are not familiar with it.

My problem with placing the blame squarely on Square is that if it was on their side it would (or at least *should*) happen to everyone, not a random sampling... But, I also wouldn't rule them out. It is more a matter of proving what you can, and moving on from there.

I'm being fair and not putting all the blame on them(yet) but this all started after monday's maintenance. So something happened during that time, that slipped by SE.

Its been bad for the last 2 maintenances, and because its so many people i would have to assume it has to be SE side because the first few weeks when no one could log in, i had no issues. It could just be servers over a certain population.

But a 3000r value is a 3 second delay between when you think you should dodge and when you actually should have dodged, which is why its impossible to dodge.

All of them? Smiley: dubious

Don't get me wrong, every once in a while Comcast went on an anti-WoW kick and started throttling the living crap out of that protocol. But this is happening to a whole lot of people all at the same time.

I'm on Comcast, and I'm not crazy about calling them about a reroute. Their customer service can rival SE's in terms of incorporation.

My brother is about 100 miles from the data center and still has r3000 most days. So i have to assume its the NA data center/servers being over stressed.
#17 Oct 03 2013 at 6:49 AM Rating: Good
I always thought the S/R was "sending/receiving" and was the number of bytes streaming to and from your system to the data center... that it didn't have anything to do with latency. High R indicates lag because you're getting flooded with data, but doesn't actually cause the lag by itself.

Did they change it from FFXI?

I have no idea, i am not an it/computer person i just know that when that number goes from 200-300 to 3000 it litterally feels like a 3 second delay so i just assumed thats what s0 r3000 ment

If you're on a skinny pipe - I don't think anyone is on 56K dialup any more but that's the lowest end, followed by sattelite, then DSL, then cable, then fiber at the high end - then having a very high S/R could be causing lag because your Internet connection just can't handle it. Cable is usually only an issue when you're on a shared connection with others, such as in an apartment building.

You can go to speedtest.net and run a free test on your Internet connection. If your down stream is any less than 1 mbps and your up stream is any less than 0.5 mbps, you probably want to call your ISP and have words with them. Even the lowest end DSL promises at least 3 mbps down stream.

Additionally, high S/R loads can gum up a slower/older computer system since so much is going on that it's going to have trouble rendering everything since the amount of data it's getting is too much for the GPU to handle. We saw that was a major problem in FFXI.

To be fair, i always thought my latency was the problem with me getting out of AoE as well.

Then i checked and from the EU to the NA server, i only have a 107ms of latency.

So it's not a delay problem, it's a problem with how often the position of your character is updated and send to the server. Probably combined with a problem on what point of the build-up the hit is calculated.

I can pretty surely tell you two things.

One, the calculation if you're hit or not takes place way before the red targeting square/circle fades away.

And two, your location isnt updated frequently enough with the server to see if you're out of range or not. The refreshrate for this is probably set anywhere between 200ms and about 500ms, instead of the 20ms we would like it to be, to prevent server stress

All in all, this seems like the unfortunate byproduct of letting far more people on the server than the 5000 it was originally intended for and most importantly, too many that it can actively communicate swiftly with for accurate positioning. If we had fewer people on the server, the refreshrate could probably have been set a little quicker.

I only have trouble getting out of the red if I fail to start moving the moment it appears (or I'm dumb and try to walk backwards - that only works on tiny AOEs like slugs.) If I wait to finish casting a spell, I will get caught in the AOE.

I'm on a 10d/1u Mbps adsl connection, so speed isn't the issue. I also use speedtest.net frequently, and there are no issues. My ping is almost always below 100ms on any of their servers. I also went to pingtest.net and got a latency of 300ish when testing their servers in the USA.

Computer power also isn't an issue as I'm using a 4770K, which is one of the top CPUs on the market right now, along with a GTX 660.

You know, I am starting to wonder... Remember how FFXI was capped at 56k? Now I don't believe this game is (someone can totally correct me, but I noticed that, until FFXI, this game is heavily influenced by any large upload or download activity on my PC), so could it be a packet handling issue on their end? Like, as in they are getting flooded with data and just having issues resolving what the current data really is? I know that there's always been a bit of encoded buffer time on FFXI where you can move early and still have it complete. Maybe this buffer time is causing the issue?

edit: I also assume you've opened all the proper ports, yadda yadda yadda.

Mmmmmmm yeah I just installed a 4770K and it is glorious. And yet, I haven't had any of the issues people describe at all. My pings are good, my DSL is good enough (no thanks to AT&T). Probably the only potential difference between my system and others is that I've got the game on an SSD, which performs miracles on the PS3 and also helps PC a good bit. Even in some of the really crazy FATES like that DD series in Coerthas just means that the sound stutters because it can only overlay 12 channels and I'm surrounded by 100 players. No lag, no rubber banding, no latency.
