FFXIV-APP SE-TOSFollow

#1 Oct 10 2013 at 2:50 AM Rating: Decent
I used this tool for a couple of days and then it occurred to me that seeing how this tool hooks some in-game functions that it probably violates SE's TOS. So I re-read (okay, lying, first time read) the SE-TOS, and FFXIV-APP definitely violates SE's TOS, making the use of this program banable. While I doubt SE would a) know about you using it and b) care, it is still potentially banable, and I really think that should be noted somewhere on the FFXIV-APP.com website.

Chat Log =! Game Data...I don't think. It means like reverse engineering important files to make hacks or modify how the game itself interacts.

A parser ONLY reads the chat log. It doesn't modify the data, only shows it to you with purty like graphs.

We have the OK from SE, they're aware of our program.

Chat Log == Game Data. By definition game data means anything provided by the client, which would include everything from pixel maps to usernames, to chat boxes and combat logs.

The key word in that line is analyze in this instance.

I've heard reports of people getting banned for even posting a link to ffxiv-app.com.

Quit fear-mongering. ZAM is an official partner site for SE. This means, among other things, that ZAM agrees to support SE's efforts to present the game in the nature that SE wants it presented. It is a partnership, with ZAM benefiting by increased access to Devs, events, and information, and SE benefiting with ZAM's support advertising the game and enforcing it's game-related policies.

The app has a prominent place on ZAM's website, with an official download link and moderator/admin support and recommendation (You realize you quoted an admin for this website, right?). If SE didn't like it, all it would take is one phone call or e-mail for it to disappear and it would be gone.

Believe me or not, SE knows about our app and even has the source. Don't use it if you don't want to but knock it off with the rumors.

I'm not fear mongering at all. I'm not trying to dissuade people from using this tool if it's legitimately allowed to be used to parse game data without being banned. The reason I posed the followup statement to Wint's statement is because I'm being told on one hand that the tool is allowed to be used and on the other hand people are getting banned for even discussing it on the official SE forums. I feel like this is a legitimate question to know for sure, don't you think? Also if it does violate the SE-TOS, then the people who download this tool have a right to know and they can decide if a risk is worth it.

Not trying to hurt this project at all. Just looking for a definitive answer before I assume risk (if any).

If you want a quote from SE themselves you won't get it. They can't support one app without supporting all of them. I can only tell you what we know on our end from our SE Rep we work with. If it makes you feel any better, I use it every time I play, so if there is a risk I'm sticking my neck out just as far as you are.

"It" as in the app from this site, or "it" as in FFXIV Apps (all of them)? I've seen othr apps called FFXIV App, they are different from the one on this site and may be breaking rules.

You guys are putting together a fantastic tool, I really hope SE gives official word on it soon.
I'm going to err on the side of caution then for now. Thanks for being as candid as you can, I appreciate it.
