So I'm standing in Vesper Bay and I want to go to Limsa Lominsa but the pesky Ferry NPC says the boat service is suspended until further notice, what gives? I'd like to unlock Arcanist...
I believe you need to get your Airship pass before using the ferry, but not 100% positive.

I believe it's tied to story progression. I'm pretty sure that a ferry will not take you someplace that you haven't already been to unless a quest specifically requires it.

So is there a different way to get to Limsa? And how does one get the airship pass? Any help is greatly appreciated. :P

The airship pass is granted after a specific story mission. Prior to that, there is no way to get to Limsa Lominsa--or, if one started there like I did--no way to leave.
For Gridania I'm not sure, but you need to do the story quests until the head of gridania congratulates you and asks you to be an emmisary, it will be after you have done a number of dungeons. In Uhdhal, it was a level 17 quest. (if I recall correctly.)
It is tied to the story level of the quest not to your level. so if you don't do the main story, you'll never get out of Gridania.

Its a lv14-15 story line quest because you get airship pass to other cities and your first dungeon is Satasha a lv 15 dungeon near the Aleport in La Norscea Just do story and you will get there.. Pretty good chance that you will need current class to 15 in the future so Its not hurting anything
And also Its not true you are not stuck In Gridania you can walk to Ul"Dah from Gridania its limsa you get stuck in

As a general rule, if the question is "How do I get access to/travel to/unlock ...", the answer is "progress your story quest line." If you take your story quest to 50, and pick up miscellaneous breadcrumb quests along the way in the various quest hubs you hit, you will unlock or be sent to just about every zone, dungeon & instance in the game.
