Questionable FFXIV Add in IGNFollow

I just logged into IGN on my phone and saw an Ad for FFXIV Bot at the top if the page. It advertised automated harvesting, leveling, etc. I won't link here obviously, but I was kind of surprised IGN would allow ads encouraging people to cheat in MMOs and quite possibly get their accounts banned.

It's doubtful they pick and choose what ads you are served. Typically the site you see the add on is just being served the ad from an automated service, which usually uses things like your own browsing data to return ads their engine matches with your interests.

Naw its just an ad that works like "display FFXIV ad001" which happens to be the bot website, im sure there is 002 = the offical website , 003 = some random fan site etc etc.

Its usually some company is paid to promote your website, and they do it by selling ad space on other websites. etc etc

Lol, I didn't mean to imply someone was looking at gil buying web sites. It's more likely someone was Googling for FFXIV stuff, and this is what the ad server considers an FFXIV related ad.

I remember this happening on Allakhazam (before it was Zam.com) a while ago. I think it was gold/gil sellers, rather than bots, but the explanation was the same - they were being fed ads from a service. However, after the community made a stink about it, the staff were able to work out a deal with the advertising company to make sure no more similar ads appeared.

If that site uses an ad feed, then for the site to block certain ads from showing is incredibly easy.

Every gaming site I go to on the internet (including this one on occassion) has a Wartune add with "Males Only" and a picture of a woman in a chainmail bra, even though those ads were proven to be blatant false advertisement (female gamers can certainly play and those advertisements contain more nudity than the game). Whether it is an ad for selling gil, or the pilot coming over the intercom to try to sell me a US Airways credit card, marketing in general has turned into a profession that will join attorneys and politicians in a special dark corner when the world goes to mess.

Any talk about marketting makes me think of the following spin on an age old joke:
Q. How do you tell a salesman is lying?
A. His lips move.

Q. How do you tell someone in marketing is lying?
A. You can't. Even he doesn't know for sure.

Forget hot coffee and slipping on the floor, we need more false advertising lawsuits. Turn the lawyers against the marketers and they can battle.

I've seen a few questionable ads on IGN from time to time. I think they just don't bother filtering, and as many have said, if you have cookies from games in your history, or if you have cookies from that ad provider that have tracked you searching for any game, you could get served ads for selling currency or other items for that game.

Ads? what Ads? I use Firefox with adblock plus, pop up killer, no-script and other goodies.
So I never see any ads anywhere :)

There are times I used to browse on PCs that... weren't directly mine. I do try to toss Chrome with AdBlock/Adblock Plus onto every browser. Sometimes you just can't. Plus if you Incognito, the ad-ons don't always work. Sometimes I'll do that if I get weird page display errors, which normally can be related to poorly made ad scripts.
