Higher Level Jobs in Underleveled Dungeons?Follow

#1 Oct 21 2013 at 8:54 PM Rating: Good
So lately I've been leveling up my other classes after getting PLD to 50 and SMN/SCH to 30.

Well, while in Halatali, I'm noticing a lot of level 40/50 toons synced down of course, and I'm wondering why they're there? Then one instance in particular the PLD tank, who was level 42, informed us immediately that this was his first time there. His tanking wasn't even sub-par. He did NOT use flash, or provoke even once and we wiped on the first group.

WHAT. THE. ****.

How do you get that high of a level without even the BASIC fundamentals of tanking? I mean, I can admit I am not the best tank, but I KNOW if he's been pulling crap like this then he must be getting ******* at like I was all throughout the leveling dungeons!

WHAT GIVES!?!

...more of a rant, but my IRL friends don't play. Hence why I post here:) thanks/sorry lol

I'm almost in favor of level caps on a characters first job in the vein of FFXI's genkai, but with completion specific storyline dungeons/encounters being the key to unlocking higher levels.

That still leaves the problem of people leveling subsequent jobs with different roles, and those that get stuck on certain dungeons, though, So I don't think it would work as well as I would hope.

Edit: The key word here is "almost", guys. I recognize it's not the best idea in the world; I'm just trying to spark a conversation.

Did you try and coach them at all? If so were they receptive of the coaching or were they just silent or belligerent to your advice?

Sounds like they (perhaps) changed Grand Companies and are grinding through the hunting log again, or just zerged to that level in fates as said, then realise they will need the GC weapon for entry to the endgame dungeons (which, by the sounds of it, will be the least of their worries).

No. At 42 he either knows his stuff, or he is a burden that should be kicked out of the group.
I'm not the nice Samartian who helps out some guy with basic algebra in university.

Me and my wife kid a lot when we see shouts for CM speed runs.

"Oh hey honey! Another run happening for Copperbell Mines!"

I have a lvl 50 Warrior and have also have been through the lower level dungeons (Like the original CM) Most of the times it's for helping Free Company friends, real life friends..... and.... just for fun.

Yes, just for the fun of it. There is post after post here in Zam about how the player base seems to get less tolerant, more verbally aggressive, and over all suffering from internet amnesty the higher up you get in the dungeons. I tend to agree, and both me and my wife have run into this time and time again.

Those lower dungeons are still fun and filled with folks also having fun still in the game.

Then you're part of the problem and have no position to be yelling at someone who doesn't know how to play their class.

I run them because of an online friend. Last night we did regular Titan. I do not normally run guildhest, so we did the lv20-30 ones to catch me up to w/e one he needs help with.

The only other time I do the dungeons is due to the story quest that makes me go through it. It is faster to level via FATE parties then to grind out the same dungeon(s) over and over.

As to bad players...you either help them by pointing them in the right direction, explain what they need to do or you do not and they continue to go off and be a bad player.

This is exactly why I say time and time again, they need to bring back party grind. Where you have a functional party at all levels to LEARN how to play. You can get to halitali by being carried through as a dps, then switch to tank and be clueless, because there is no where to learn if you just grind fates all day.

I find myselft to be generally tolerant of everyone, even if we cant beat the demon wall before the bees pop, or if one or two members appear to be struggling. I try to help out when needed. The only time I take issue ever is when I am asked to join a pug on titan and they cant break 50% into the heart. Some things just are not going to happen... At that point I respectfully thank them for the party and take my leave.

Legacy players. In the first few weeks I ran into a -lot- of over-geared lvl 50 players trying to spam Thunder II to DD. >.<

Halatali is a level 20 dungeon, still prime time for someone to try and learn their class. Those 42 levels could have easily have been gotten from nothing but sidequests, fates, or leves. None of which show you how to tank, but only spam your hard hitting abilities/aoes.

Exactly.

To extend the metaphor, this is like refusing to assist a university student with algebra when they're in a remedial math course.

Could well be legacy players - I know a fair few level 50s from 1.0 who are still plugging away through the 2.0 storyline gradually since their playtime is limited and who've had some "wtf omg a level 50" or "omg you have your job unlocked" comments entering "lowbie" dungeons via duty finder.

Playing warrior in 1.0 was different, steel cyclone spam and even positioning stuff like dps classes has to do (which was totally doable due to monsters not turning around the second you did). Berserk was a stance rather than a 20 second buff that gives you pacification for 5 seconds after.

This is exactly what I'll be doing this weekend. I started this game as CNJ and got to lvl 36 through quests with very little time spent doing any FATE's so when I decided to do PLD instead I went the FATE route and enjoyed it. I've now hit 32 however and my plan is to tank Titan to advance my quest progression, I'd tried the fight on WHM and we failed, nice group, tried our best but it didn't happen for us.
I was a career PLD in FF11 so I understand the basics and what most abilities do and represent but I've had no practice at all at tanking anything on this game, my plan this weekend is to spam the dungeons, starting at Sastasha and doing each one 3 or 4 times up to Brayflox's Longstop (the highest I have unlocked) That should net me some gil, the exp I need to hit lvl 34+ and crucially real tanking experience while helping first timers get clears.
Guides are nice and everything but they don't tell me how to arrange my macro's or anything on a more personal nature like screen layout or targetting strategies, you've just got to get in there and find your feet. So that's why high level PLD's are syncing down to lower dungeons, to get exp, sell drops for gil, lootwhore, help friends and get tanking practice.

I had a 38 Gladiator back in Ver 1.0. Just yesterday I geared him up out of the AH, all level 37~38 gear. Set all my abilities best I could figure them out. Went out and start killing some level 38 mobs to iron out my abilities/rotation. Then I needed to get some group tanking experience in ARR, so I queue DF. I considered the low level dungeons, but decided to queue one that would give EXP. Cutter's Cry popped.

So my first ever ARR tanking experience in a party was at level 38 in Cutter's Cry. I told the party as much and we did just fine. I lost hate a time or two as a figured out the range of flash, and what things my party does that will take hate from me, and how to deal with it.

Now I do know the basic fundamentals of tanking from previous experience. This is just one way that you may find yourself dealing with freshly minted, high level tanks.

(Don't forget the great Power Level Debacle of Ver 1.0. You could literally equip a lvl 1 sword and AFK your way to 42 in an afternoon. Did not need to swing a sword or kill a single creature. Glad that is fixed. It true that FATE grind is similar, but at least you have to run about.)
