So I've pretty much spent my entire day reading up on this game. I think I have a pretty fair grasp on most things, but there is one thing I am a bit confused about: the whole levelquest thing. I just don't get it. Can anybody make it understandable?

Levequest.

You get an 'allowance' every few hours that allows you to participate in a levequest. You accept them from an NPC. Once accepted you need to head to a specific area and initiate it. You'll get a choice on how difficult you want it to be when you start it. Once you complete it, you return to the NPC and collect your reward.

It's not much different from a regular quest.

Once you accept a levequest, you'll need to go out to a location and activate it. Your map will show you the general location. Once you're in the area (colored red), you can start it. To start it, go to Journal in the menu, select the leve and activate.

So when I turn it in, does that re-open the allowance? Or is the only way to get more allowances to just wait for time to pass?

I highly recommend Using these for crafting instead of leveling your battle classes.
You are better off doing FATEs or dungeons for your battle classes to level them up...

Way to completely not answer the question lol.

The actual answer to your question is you wait for time to pass. Read up on it here:

Right, but this whole thing about allowances makes it seem like there's some limit to how many of this type of quest I can do. Does turning one of them in open up another slot, or do I just have to wait for more time to pass to be able to do more?

You get 3 new leves every 12 hours (RL). Nice thing about leves, if you're a casual player, you can blow through a bunch of them and a couples days later, you're good to go again.

I'll probably be averaging about 2 hours a day. Some days it will be more (a lot more) and some days it will be none.

You earn something like 3 allowances every 12 hours, and every levequest only uses 1 allowance, so they build up quite quickly. It is best to save them for crafting jobs if you plan to level a craft, however, as crafting can take a very long time to level up, and when levelling a fighting class you have the option of dungeons, quests, and FATEs.

I plan to level everything. I'm an ADD MMOer, which is why this game appeals to me so much. I don't have to have 15 different characters to level 15 different classes.

Basically you can have up to 99 allowances, and you earn 3/12 hours.
You spend 1 per levequest, thats really all there is to it

The best thing to use levequests for is crafting, I wouldnt level crafting without them.

Crafting > harvesting > battlecraft as far as leve usage goes.

I think it's every 3 real hours. You'll get an allowance and you can hold up to 99 of them so if you aren't using them, they'll start to stack up. You do not have to be logged in for the allowances to accrue.

I've done like a grand total of 10 levequest so far, and I used them for boosting the Woodworking I was working on at the time.

I assume they are what anyone who levels more then one class up would use (but I would think FATEs could be better, if done in a party), or as it has been said already, use them to level up a craft (crafting can take a lot, levequest can give a good amount of exp to help).

What I like to do is build them up over a week and then binge on them getting something up to 50.

In addition to crafting, they're fabulous for fishing. They're kind of "meh" for the other two gathering jobs, however.

Levequests are one of the few things that came directly from the 1.0 version of the game. They even had a classic one from 1.0 out by Little Ala Mihgo, which made me ridiculously nostalgic for the old game (for a few seconds, anyway.)

There are also Grand Company levequests you can do later on, as well as mini training parties called guildhests that pair you up in the Duty Finder and give you tutorials on how to play in a group in preparation for the dungeons later on.

Allowances - cap of 100 can be on a single character. These accumulate over time.

If you have 20 allowances, and you grab 3 levequests, you now have 17 allowances. You may repeat leves until none remain.

Edit: Smartphone fail

That all said,

You can also naturally (and you probably should) use them on Crafting jobs for Tradeskill Leves, which means you need to make item X or Y for a client, who will reward you with gil, an item which usually are free crystals and lets not forget, a BOATLOAD chunk of EXP. More than you'd make crafting for a while. Definitely more than the measly amount you'd get from a combat-leve, you have FATES for your Deciples of War and Magic Classes, dont waste your points on it.

Same goes for the Field Leves, which are used by Gathering classes. Yield more EXP than you'd get just gathering normally. Big chunks at a time, which will make leveling trivial.

You should look at what best suits you for time versus reward. Asuming a relatively low (up to level 30 level)

Combat classes: 2000 to 7000 EXP per leve, but they can also do FATES which give the same or more EXP for trivial work and time invested. Please dont spend your Leve allowances on something that has alternatives that are easier, quicker, give more EXP and can be found all over the world in a matter of seconds. The one exception to this rule is ofcourse if your Leve quest reward is an item you could really need for your job.

Crafting classes: 4000 to 16000 EXP per leve, when you turn in HQ items instead, the reward gets an extra 200% on top of that.
Meaning 12.000 to 48.000 EXP per leve turn in. Not counting the leves which let you turn in items 3 times for 3 times the reward.
Which, depending on your level, is about 2-3 Leves needed per level.

Gathering classes: 4000 to 10000 EXP per leve, you do get higher rewards if you are quick and do them at a higher level, but rarely anything over a 25% increase.

Thanks for all the answers, folks. I got my main class (GLD) to level 9 before work this morning. I'm hoping to get to level 15 tonight. I'm trying to decide if I should branch out as soon as I hit level 15, or wait until I hit 30 and need to go CNJ to unlock PLD.

One more question. There is a class quest every 5 levels, right? So when I get to level 10, do I need to go to my guild and pick up a new quest?

Yep class quest every 5 levels. The story line will take you to 50 for the most part on your first character. I would wait until 30 personally before doing cnj.

On a side note, for the Gathering leves like stated above you collect Y and turn into NPC for experience. You also get a ton more experience from gathering Y then just going out and grinding it out. Sucked when I had grinded out Botany to 50 then a patch came along boosting the exp from leve grinding and everyone just used leve's to get to 50 and killed the market.

Do you also recommend waiting until 30 to start gathering and crafting classes? I'm an ADD gamer and a completionist, so I'll probably level every gathering and crafting class.

Yes, and you should also unlock crafting through the main storyline at level 10. Levequests are best used there from craft level 15 on. You should obviously use some levequests for anything you can once they hit the cap of 99 so you dont waste any allowances, but generally stick your leves to crafts. Your first job. if you follow the storyline, will sail you through levels (tons of exp and gil and items)

Once you hit 30 you will want that paladin. In fact, level conjurer to the point where you get protect and cure and equip them as cross class skills to your gladiator. Helps immensely. You dont really get extra stats from your subclass like you did in FF11, so you will be leveling subclass simply for the cross class skills.

Your class quests will end at 25 and become job quests at level 30. Those will be offered from a different location.

Thats all the advice I think I can give

Oh man I totally forgot about the GC leves. I'm gonna burn some allowances soon I think. Need seals for BTN/MIN/FSH manuals :)

I need to spend some of the leve allowances on GC quests to get my first mount right? And that happens at level 20? Man, there is so much information to learn for this game.

No need to spend leve allowances for the first mount, it's a side-quest available to everyone after your level 20 main story quests... it just costs 2000 seals so you may need to save some up while leveling on FATE's.

EDIT: Here's a reference website on that

Do you need to advance the story past the Chocobo section before you can get to the GC levequests? I can't remember, but they're really close to each other progress-wise.

leveguests are inefficient repeatable quests that nobody bothers with except for maybe 20-30 minutes of GC leaves for the choco license because they are:

A) Boring
B) Give poor XP.

Fate grinding is A as well but at least its isn't B.

Otherwise they appear useful for trolling fate groups. Join group, start leve, quit group.
