Tanaka Tires of "Fatigue" Rumors

Surplus points, a new feature recently introduced into the Final Fantasy XIV beta, has had testers and fans on the outside quite confused.  Most people consider it akin to "fatigue," where a character is beset with limitations after a certain amount of play.  With no official announcement or explanation on how these points work, fan sites and forums have been struggling to figure them out -- often leading to some harsh criticism of the game.  Now, Producer Hiromichi Tanaka seems to have built up some "fatigue" of his own, and lashed out at foreign sites on Twitter today, calling them full of rumors and fabrications.

"Foreign sites have lots of false rumors.  They throw together words and fabricate remarks.  Then Japanese sites take this and further [falsify it through] mistranslation.  The fatigue point criticism has absolutely nothing to do with the actual [system] and is just full of wild ideas."

The source of Tanaka's dismay appears to stem from this interview with Famitsu from Gamescom. In it, the developers admit the existance of a fatigue system, claiming it was designed to benefit players with comparatively little time to enjoy the game. With the details left unclear, "fatigue" has become a source of speculation across the Internet and some articles have made shocking claims regarding its function in limiting player growth and freedom. The situation has reached a point where Tanaka believes that what people are criticizing is nothing like the system as it is in the actual game. Furthermore, the last line states that he believes too many people are just coming up with what they think fatigue might be and making the situation even worse.

Sure, wild speculation is not hard to find while wading through any popular forum, but the assertion that this is the fault of foreign sites is a little harsh.  A quick glance at a thread on the JP Beta tester site dedicated to understanding this system reveals pages of baffled testers trying to figure out how exactly it functions.  Several replies from Japanese fans also point to the lack of any official explanation as exacerbating, if not outright causing, the issue.

At least we know the producer of the game has been apprised of the issue.  As mentioned many times, the entire testing process was based on building the game in accordance to player feedback.  Will it be received and implemented into the design process, or continue to be dismissed as wild delusions?  Hopefully, we will see a more measured response in the coming days.

It seems to me he is getting upset about the negative reaction from the foreign community. Which will in turn decrease the market in such areas. With games like EQ2 going free and more following this line of steps I hope SE starts to understand that the whole world does not think like the Japanese people do or play all games like they do. In turn fix the mouse/keyboard issue for starters.

I can under stand this but SE needs to understand that probably 1/3 if not half of the community will be foreign and dont want to be limited when they are paying a monthly fee to play a game. If the rumors are false they should explain but as it is he is just lashing out and seemingly being bias toward forgiven community. 90% of them time when this happens the rumors are true. To be honest it seems like the game will be lacking in content and will be fixed on the fly sorta speak like almost every mmo coming out now days, getting people to pay for beta more less.

I would be fine with just the basic issues get resolved. Mouse/Keyboard and maybe a jump so I dont spend a lot of time going on a nature walk because I can step across a inch gap.

thats SquareEnix for you. lets make games and not explain much let people always guess everything. this is 2010. information should flow freely. they are still suck in the 1990's when they were the only good developers for rpgs.

this game is about to launch yet from testing the beta it feels so incomplete. wth is up with no hardware mouse support? SE is so bad at making/optimizing PC games. They are like the last MMO makers that keep you in the dark.

They should thank Foreign Sites. Most of the Foreign Sites as Tanaka calls it praise FF14 or talks mostly positive about the game. I really don't get whats the difference between Japanese FanSites and Foreign FanSites. Is this going to be another FF11 all over again where Japanese people gets the respect while "us" foreigners take the backseat again?

I'm playing the game during launch but I have to say this is one of the most anticipated game for the Fans of FF outside of it I can't even get my other friends to try cause there's not enough good information available with only 1 month away from Launch.

Sure, Tanaka should probably explain things.

But all the wild rumors, negativity, whining, crying, complaining and other QQing does, in fact, come from the testers making up stuff, no matter what.

You can't blame the one not talking for everyone else's lies.

I'm getting sick of seeing of the FFXIV Devs constantly picking negatively at foreign feedback. What relevance is there in pointing out "Foreign Sites". I mean it's a website. Does it really matter if it's ran by Japanese fans or otherwise? Irrelevant xenophobia if you ask me.

The bottom line though, if you are capable of informing us then it's your fault for not stopping these "rumors". It takes about as much time and effort as his original twitter.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You're aware of outrage by many in the community through self acknowledgement, complain about sites who are essentially "making stuff up", yet FAIL to give an answer as to what it is. If we're so confused how about you explain it to us?

I have a guess why -- because it is what we think and before you explain how it works you need to overhaul it!

Great work Mr. Tanaka!
