FFXIV Hot Read Thursday

Check out the hottest topics from the past week of the FFXIV general forum.

Discussions in the forum are still centered around the state of Final Fantasy XIV, as will likely be the case for quite some time. However, last week's update previews from Square Enix helped to alleviate some of the doom and gloom on the forums... but not all of it! Despite the promises for improvement, several players are still criticizing several aspects of the game; some have even branded it "unplayable."

Well, I'm taking a break from playing the unplayable game to bring you this edition of Hot Read Thursday!

On with the links:

Do We Have a Goal in FFXIV...?

What are we expected to do in FFXIV without endgame, notorious monsters or ridable chocobos? The OP questions whether there are any virtual carrots worth chasing, and others contribute their thoughts on the matter. Some posters criticize the game for its lack of content, while others raise the point that perhaps FFXIV is a game best experienced slowly. I pondered this very issue myself while ranking up my gladiator, trying to craft my first piece of armor and talking to linkshell mates about forming a static. What is there to possibly aim for?

Outside looking in: Is FFXIV dead before it really started

Is Final Fantasy dying? A topic which was absolutely taboo in Final Fantasy XI is at the center of discussion in this Hot Read Thursday thread. The main issue here is how much bad press can one game handle, and has FFXIV crossed that threshold? Obviously, the answer is different depending on who you ask. If this game really is dead on arrival though, maybe someone should notify Square Enix... last I heard, they were planning on making tons of improvements. Why make so many improvements to a dead game? When will SE ever learn?!?

Why I am enjoying this game

In stark contrast to those who have labelled FFXIV as a soulless grindfest devoid of any content, this OP states that she loves the game because it is casual, solo-friendly and allows players to be productive at their own pace. Clearly, the OP just isn't pushing herself hard enough to be the best she can be. Now's the time to be building that insurmountable advantage over PS3 players! Why are you tending to your family when there are still crafts to level?

This is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE
For the WoW players out there, go back to your pre-teen gaming and leave the big boy games alone.
For those out there bashing FFXIV and its lack of content, wake up, why on earth would you ever want to play a game that you can "finish" in a month?
The greatest thing I loved about FFXI was that it was a game that I could go home to on a daily basis and do whatever I felt like (lvl up, craft, camp NMs, whatever) and I have the foresight on me to know that this is exactly what FFXIV is going to be able to provide me with again.

Anyone that thinks that when a MMO is released it is flawless is a complete idiot and doesn't have the capacity to see past their own epeen, and to be honest those of you that feel the current state that this game is in makes it "unplayable" good riddance. It is players like you that make games like this unenjoyable in the first place, I hope you never come back.

Pre-teen gaming? because we actually like content and a game that works? WoW is way more successful than this game will EVER be. If bashing a 12 million subscriber game helps you be able to play this farce of a game and help you sleep at night, then good for you. The masses have spoken. this game is fail.

Can we all take a look at this word and realize what it really means... Everyone like to say WoW this and WoW that and holy crap... 12 million "SUBSCRIBERS" ... Exactly, that's all it is are "SUBSCRIBERS" ... that does not in any way mean there are still 12 million people playing the game till this day. You can count me as one of those 12 million people, but I stopped playing after the first 30 days and never looked back. Just because I am a "SUBSCRIBER" and have a WoW account does not mean I still play... get over the 12 million already, they need to be truthful about the numbers of people who actually do still play a game that looks and plays like a PSX title. Get with the times and take a chance and make a game that actually looks like a HD NextGen title and have 12 million ACTUAL PLAYERS and then and ONLY then will you have something to brag about!!!!!!!

You apparently don't read much, either. Blizzard themselves gave stated they do not count canceled accounts, free trial accounts or accounts in the first free 30 days as "subscribers". Your argument would work for most free to play asian mmos that yell how many millions of accounts have been created, but it doesn't work against WoW. And by the way, I don't even like WoW; just figured I'd burst your balloon.

Do you think SE gave people another 30 days free out of the generosity of their hearts? lol

They gave people 30 extra days to keep those accounts showing as active on their accounting books so they can lessen the negative impact on their quarterly report.

Even SE knows their game is broke. And their time to fix it is quickly running out.

why the hell are people ******* about endgame when most people are lvl 20? why ***** about more content when you arent high enough to even walk to all the crystals that are out there now? you wont be able to make max lvl in a month like wow so there is no need for this stuff now. chill out lvl dicferent jobs, mix and match abilities, see what combos work best and then, maybe just maybe you will be ready for the kick *** end game content that will be delivered. dont come here expecting a kids game handout with mr t. this is Final Fantasy, a challenge not for your 6 year old.

The reason I am upset (I don't claim to be the spokesperson of every disgruntled EX-player now) is because I was hoping for a great game from my favorite RPG creators. I went to the store and shelled out 75$ for my CE of this game. Got home extremely excited, more excited than I've been for a game in a long time. I was looking forward to it being my new recreational game and was highly disappointed that the very foundation of the game was so unpolished that for me it is unplayable.

I keep coming back to these forums not to bother people who can actually find some good in this game, but with a slim hope that square will actually update their game into something actually playable.

You enjoy the game as it is? great for you, but you are in no way at all in the majority. They offered another month, but seriously what's the point? not like anything we complain about will be fixed within another 30 days. Tell me to go back to WoW? No problem, I'll just relax with my 12m subscribers and play a completed game.

If you haven't figured it out already, what you are experiencing is the dumbing-down of video games. WOW is the world's #1 example. You should not be surprised. If movies (Transformers?), music (Justin Beiber) and Televison ("Reality" TV, Entertainment News) play to the easy-to-please 80% because that's where the money's at, what makes you think that can't or won't (or DIDN'T ALREADY) happen to video games?

FF14 already dead? Maybe, but in 2006 the Playstation 3 with its hardcore focus, big price tag and cheap competitors was declared dead-on-arrival, too. Look at it now.

Let me give you a train of thought to combat that bad press (that everyone cares way too F'n much about). A creed if you will. Copy it and paste it. Take credit for it if you want:

"I am an adult gamer. I don't need FF14 (or my XBOX, or PS3, or TV show or favorite band or TV show) to be #1. I just need it to be popular enough to keep the servers going. I accept that I'm in the minority because I have patience, appreciate difficulty, am not a graphics *****, and ultimately realize that how much effort something takes is directly proprtional to the sense of accomplishment. I don't own stock in the company that made the game is question, therefore I don't need to defend the product as if it is a source of income. As for my tastes, they are my own and you can agree or disagree."

I play WoW. I am also an FF fan (since 1). This however is the first SE game I have played that I have felt negatively about. My biggest gripes aren't even content oriented. FFXIV is buggy, and unstable. The UI functions like it is 11's with a facelift; it's so laggy. This one also applies to combat. It takes me 2-4 times the actual cast time of a spell to actually get it to apply to an enemy/ally/self.
People tell me to look through the flaws, and enjoy the content. It is very hard when my interface with the game world (the window through which I experience FFXIV, you could say) is tediously inefficient and a chore to use. How am I supposed to enjoy a combat balanced around zero lag in a world where a 3 second response time is considered good? (My actual server ping is below 100 both ways)
So if anything, a true FF fanboi should be pissed at this game right now along with the rest of the community, not flaming others (who have another functional game which they enjoy) for wanting a game that they can AT LEAST smoothly interact with.

spydercanopus is relaly simple, go out and kill some mobs and you will be full of shards/crystal in no time and also you will be leveling your DoW/DoM or try some of the DoL.

K, so I see everyone complaining about what a grindfest XIV is .... not enough quest..... really ppl WTF indeed!!!!! did you guys not play 11? because i dont remember getting any quest xp the 7 years I played. I do agree that it may have been a little early to release the game tho. Also the "WoW" players coming to bash about how the game isnt anything compared to WoW... well when you grow up... you will understand. Yes i did play wow for a few months and realized what a joke the game is. So I guess if you want everything handed to you, go back to WoW. If you actually want to earn what you get, give FFXIV a chance.
haha

Times have changed since XI came out and a game that's pretty much equal to it's predecessor with pretty graphics is unacceptable. WoW raised the bar in MMOs.
Just quit and be done with it.

Wah, Wah, Wah .... Too lazy to get or buy shards, WOW enthusiasts playing FFXIV, and some really "half empty" protagonists will NEVER be satisfied.

Delete FFXIV already, sheesh.

Why does FFXIV suck Khronus? I'd assume if you're going to spew word vomit you'd at least give some reason to back it up...besides promoting World of Warcraft. If it's 'dominating' the MMO market then what's your reasoning behind promoting it? You're just looking for something to fight against.

Also...noobs? That word is beyond overused, and I don't see any reasoning behind you using it, dumbass.

I honestly love already what they have made with FFXIV and I'm hopeful this game will establish in some way or another on the market. Indeed I wanted just an improved FFXI which is more playable solo and I think I got it. Beautiful world, a storyline which can't be compared to other MMOs stories, interesting classes, a player-driven economy, interconnected and meaningful crafting. Most of the points people complain about I can't use to say that FFXIV is a "uncomplete bug/grindfest" or whatsoever. They sped up combat a little bit and made the game better controllable by mouse/keyboard(especially the UI). That's about everything what annoyed me in Beta.
I have to say I'm far from thinking about endgame, but what I saw/experienced so far satisfies me and Endgamecontent will come as time passes by.
I hate the WoW-Crowd trying to bash upcoming MMOs. I think it is better they vanish after a time.
End Game

Let me ask a question here... what exactly is the end game in wow... but to run around, do endless amounts of dungeons over and over and over again, to build up gear... to do more dungeons over and over and over again. It is essentially the same thing for all mmo's, you hit max level and then have nothing to do but wait for the next expansion, level another class or char and endlessly grind mobs to get gear to make leveling in the next expansion so mind numbingly easy that you reach max level and repeat the process for months and months, and sometimes years.

This is a really wild experience. Where is all the stuff to do!? I can't craft because I'm out of crystals and shards, I can't quest because of the timer, and the main quest is extremely short.

I was expecting a lot more, but the foundation is strong.
