Square Enix Donates $1.2 Million to Japan Relief

On March 11th, the northern regions of Japan were devastated by the largest recorded earthquake in the country's history and the resulting tsunami that ravaged the coast. To aid in recovery efforts for the victims, the group Square Enix Group, comprised of Square Enix and other associated companies, has donated 100 million Japanese yen (approximately $1.2 million) to relief organizations. The group has also established that they will be accepting donations from employees worldwide for further aid to the affected areas.

With FFXIV having had such a disastrous release, I'm sure SE has been worried about their profits as of late; that they still found an extra 1.2 million dollars to donate is nice.
Huh?

Is that even legal? As noble as the cause is, SE is looting its shareholders here.

I'm sure something like this was done with the approval of their majority shareholders. It's not like a person in their PR decided "I'm going to take 1.2 million dollars and give it to Japan".

Remember, majority of the shares are owned by the owners...

You mean all of them? I believe they must have had a vote for a move like this to be possible.

Its not uncommon for corporations and even small companies to be contributing to relief efforts in Japan via donations. An example is Riot Games, they have started a fundraiser for their League of Legends service where if you spend cash on a particular hero and custom skin all proceeds go to the Red Cross relief efforts in Japan.( http://www.leagueoflegends.com/news/nurse-akali-aids-red-cross-wake-japanese-tsunami )

Much of us around the world feel for Japan, surely Square Enix shareholders would have some humility within them, even more so when your own people are in distress. When people need help, you help them.

I am Serinity from the Gilgamesh server, but my name was not available for this account, so I use this one on Zam. Once again, Square Enix has impressed me, but this time it is not for their imaginative, and innovative products or their business prowess. This time it is for their generous donation to the Japanese Relief Effort, and because they have proactively stepping up to their social responsibility. This time I am impressed beyond what mere words can express. What has happened in Japan is a disaster on such an epic scale that it will take those people a very long time to recover. They will face unprecedented challenges physically, medically, emotionally, financially, structurally, and in so many other ways, and on so many levels. For the families left behind by the deaths of loved ones, and those victims who have not yet been found, True recovery may NEVER be possible. The very SURVIVAL of so many will depend on the help they recieve NOW. My heart breaks every time that I turn on the news and see the heartbreak in the eyes of the Japanese people. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and indeed the entire country daily, because every soul in Japan, will be affected by this Disaster. Players we are a worldwide community, one that I am proud to be a part of, and our next door neighbors are in trouble. So I urge you to PLEASE be proactive and donate to the Red Cross, or find some other means to help that you are familiar with, and lets all work together to aid our stricken neighbors in their time of such desperate need ~ Serinity
