Restoration of Game Services (Mar. 22)

Square Enix has made an official news post regarding their decision to bring down the Final Fantasy XIV servers, which includes a date and time for their return: March 25th at 4am PDT.

Read on for the details below, and discuss this in the ZAM Forums!

From the Lodestone:

As part of power conservation measures enacted following the Tohoku earthquake, our game servers were shut down on Mar. 13, 2011 3:00 (PDT) and services for FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline (hereafter referred to as "these services") were temporarily suspended. We have determined a date for the restoration of these services, and would like to share this information with you.

Operating the servers for these services makes up 11.6% of the total power consumed by our Tokyo office (based on February 2011 records). We have shut down our air conditioning system (8.8%) and enacted other power conservation measures, such as reducing lighting in our offices, to achieve over 10% in energy usage reductions. With these energy saving measures in place, we will be able to bring our servers back online and restore service to FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline on Mar. 25, 2011 4:00 (PDT). All other services, such as those offered on the PlayOnline website, that were temporarily suspended will also be restored at the same time. Please be aware, however, that we may once again be required to suspend services in the event that the power situation worsens.

We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of these services, and thank you for your understanding. As noted in our original notice regarding the suspension of these services, customers will not be charged any monthly fees for FINAL FANTASY XI throughout the April billing cycle.

We at the Square Enix group are trying to act in a proactive manner in order to provide support towards the relief and restoration efforts in the face of this unprecedented disaster while providing reliable service to our customers, and we thank you for your understanding and support.

As the owner of a website devoted to the repair and restoration of pachinkos, ... my site, and all looking for information on these rather odd-looking games. ... machines to remain in service for about a year before they had to be ...

I've had a problem with both FF XI and FF XIV even before the shutdown. I'd get DC'd on XI after about ten minutes of logging in. XIV does the same thing on certain days especially the weekends. You either get lobby errors, timeouts or direct x failures and frame rate drops that kick you. I figure it's just server congestion. I don't seem to have these problems during the week. Could be power related on their end too.

Has anyone else been getting and error that says an error has occurred on the game server and then you get booted. It keeps happening to me since the reboot.... its getting very annoying. Its happening so often its becoming unplayable. I dare not attempt a leve.

FFXIV is a great game Unitkiller, its somewhat lacking in content right now but their working on it (although noticeable, it didn't really bother me until I hit my caps either). I've been playing since mid October, have 3 characters and didn't get burnt out until about a week before it shutdown. Of course now that I've been away for a couple weeks I'm dying to start playing again. You should definitely buy it and give it a try. It's only gotten better with each update and they have big plans in store for the ones to come.

You should have been playing since the launch. IT'S FREE and you can then make your own judgement. Be a leader not a follower.
So close (back online), but yet so far away (updates)

Can't wait to get back online! Its going to be hard to split my time up between Rift & this but I will...check that...I MUST find a way! I gotta say that Rift is putting FF to shame as far as in game content goes in every aspect you can think of. Its kind of sad really, if SE even came close to what Rift is offering they'd quite possibly have the best MMO ever created! We can only hope they finish everything before everyone leaves.
Just a thought.

I've been reading in other forums how the server shutdowns will cause a further decrease in the games population, causing it to fail and shutdown for good. I can almost bet that it will have the opposite effect. I believe that under the circumstances it will cause a rally of support for SE and their devs. You will probably have a hard time logging in when the servers go live on Friday. Everyone will come back to both XI and XIV in droves.

"Don't it always seem to go.....you don't know what you've got till it's gone....

I will definitely jump on. I've been messing around on Rift, but I miss FF. I know SE will get ff14 up to greatness like XI.

I think all players throught the April billing cycle should be presented an option to pay the $12.95 monthly fee with the proceeds going towards relief efforts. I would be more than happy to help our friends in Japan.

you know, i must say, i do miss having the option to play ffxiv when i get bored. now i havent been an everyday player, but atleast twice a week player for now, and i'm missing it. which, i thought i wouldn't when i heard the news of server shutdowns.

i think everyone with a copy of ffxiv needs to show support and log in on the 25th. to help tell SE we appreciate all their hard work they've been doing.

Cya on the 25th ffxiv

Maybe they should just stay shut down for a bit longer. I mean...I'd love to play and all, but I'm enjoying the break and let's be honest, Japan can use the power more than we need to visit a virtual world.

This was what I was thinking as well. A lot of their infrastructure is still in shambles, there are still power shortages, and radiation leaking all over the place. On the other hand, going back to business as usual is good for recovery and normalcy, and going back to normalcy is a big thing for morale.
