Just like any other computer, what matters most is the parts it's made out of, not who made it.

There are Dells that are that built quite solidly, and there are Dells that are not. Same as any other brand.

For a gaming laptop you're looking at the same things you'd be looking at with a gaming desktop:
- Processor
- RAM
- Graphics

A solid state hard drive is nice too, but laptops that include mounts for them tend to be on the pricey side.

Generally an i5 with 4GB of RAM and a discrete graphics chipset (not an integrated intel chipset) is going to do fine. And there are any number of manufacturers that make that.

In general Dell, Lenovo, and Asus make very solid laptops. But you always have to do your homework ahead of any computer purchase.

Also steer clear of Windows 8 if you can; at least for now. Don't touch new Windows until the first service pack so you're at least not paying them to beta test their product.

Actually, Windows 8 is decent so far. The only program that I haven't been able to run was WS_FTP LE 6.0 and that's nearly twenty years old so I suppose it was time. And the only thing that made me raise an eyebrow was a lack of native DVD playback, but that was solved with a free download of VLC which is a better player than Windows Media anyway.

Holy, people are still using that? I haven't seen that name since the mid 00s.

I guess I've been using Windows' built-in terminal FTP client in lieu of that when I'm not on a Linux box, but, yeah, I can see why a graphical user interface would be better for doing a lot of uploading.

Sorry for going off-track, that name just brought up a lot of nostalgia. Fond memories of Tucows and Alta Vista's categories of links, where I'd go to get that kind of free software.

well i primarily plan to game (and play ffxiv ) on my ps3 (and ps4 when it comes out) but since I havent owned my OWN pc/laptop since 2008 and even then it was about 4 years old at THAT point (it literally could BARELY run windows xp lol) and I have extra money laying around I decided I should probably get my OWN laptop/pc now instead of having to use other peoples i dont really intend to use it for gaming but it would be nice to know Id be able to play most things if i actually decided to TRY to one day.

It'sStillBetterThanCamelCase!

I used WS_FTP because I was used to it, it was easy to set up and configure, and I didn't need anything really fancier until I started programming stuff and needed to SSH into terminals remotely. And it was free and good.

I still use Paint Shop Pro 7 for most of my graphics work. I paid $100 for it almost fifteen years ago, dammit. I see no reason to stop using it.

Filezilla is about as good as it gets IMO for FTP, nice customization and easy to use.
