I think this is the critical point everyone is sort of ascribing to about a "real final fantasy game." All FF games have had some variation on "the party" in them. Some had a single 4 man team, others had interchangeable 3-4 man parties. Compare this to other RPGs, where you are one player and one player only, in control of that one player and nothing else. For single perspective RPGs, everyone who isn't a friend is automatically an enemy, and games that come from that perspective (notably the Warcraft games) are more suited to PVP. FF games aren't necessarily the only multiple-character/team RPGs out there (I can think of three or four off the top of my head and I'm sure there's hundreds of them), but it is the single most defining hallmark of the series.

Therein lies the problem... I'd so much rather have them build the game solely upon PvE encounters, and then have instances/areas for PvP, but without PvP dictating any of the actual game. Massive PvP is just not part of the DNA of Final Fantasy. When I think of PvP games, I think of things like Guild Wars or WoW. When I think of Final Fantasy, I think of party play, teamwork and shared goals.

There is tremendous value to be had in Square Enix sticking with its roots. I can't think of another gaming franchise that's so well-know and revered for its emphasis on party play.

Actually it's just a bad design practice. In any multiplayer game you should always balance symmetrical elements like classes against one another to ensure that they are in fact symmetrically balanced before you create asymmetric devices like monster encounters. Failing to do so severely restricts your flexibility in designing PvE encounters and lends itself to tons of balance problems down the line. (Such as certain classes being almost universally desirable while others having very little demand.)

No, it's not just bad design practice always. Classes absolutely do not have to be balanced perfectly, mainly because there are distinct roles for each class in FF games. A whm SHOULD lose almost religiously to a damage dealer in most 1 on 1 encounters, because that's not the role of a whm. It's role in Final Fantasy games is to play backline healer and buffer. Finding the niche for each class is far more important imo than making them perfectly balanced against all other classes. I don't want my whms to have good DD capabilities just so that they are balanced for PvP. I don't want my blms to have good defensive ability just so that they don't get 1 or 2 shotted by a good melee.

In some games, where PvP is the focus, you're absolutely right that balancing classes against one another is crucial, but for a game like FFXI or FFXIV or any game where PvE is the clear main focus, class balance against each other is a moot point and is actually counter-intuitive. Balance the classes for PvE content. If you want PvP, make the abilities separate and balance them that way like it seems will be the case for XIV.

No, a WHM should be able to heal well enough to offset the damage that a damage dealer can do, such that they are mostly evenly matched. Then, monsters which are designed to be defeated by the balanced classes can be tuned for any combination of classes. If the classes are not balanced symmetrically, then balancing encounters for possible group combinations is practically impossible. They don't HAVE to be balanced perfectly, but it is generally bad design.

Balancing the classes for PvP first makes balancing PvE encounters easier. It has nothing to do with whether or not you even use PvP. I'll break it down into as simple an example as I can: Let's say you design a PvE encounter with a total statistical power of 30. You have six players of any given combination of classes. If the total statistical power of each of those classes is 5, then your job is done. You have a balanced encounter.

If the classes have varied degrees of statistical power (e.g., healers are a 10, damage dealers a 3, tanks a 6), particularly considering the matchup and grouping dynamics, then you can only balance an encounter for certain party combinations. You have no idea if a 30 is a good matchup for the group. The encounter will automatically depend more upon the classes that come to the encounter than anything else the players can do.

I went into much greater detail on the mechanics of this a few months ago; maybe I'll dig them up later.

Sigh... I'm not going to get into another huge debate about game mechanics because I just don't care anymore. I could write out a dissertation on why I feel you're thought process is incorrect, but at this point it won't prove anything and will just start another endless back and forth that accomplishes nothing. So once again, I'm just going to agree to disagree and move on. Smiley: glare

I also don't think people will flock to a game just because it has PvP. If I was Yoshi, with my many years as a game designer and game market/trend expert, I wouldn't bank on that. Are you someone who won't buy the game if it doesn't have a sweet PvP? I mean, this just isn't that game. It's just Ostia being his retarded self as usual trying to make a point he was called out on, but people never learn, it's human nature. FF has so many other ways to handle PvP we don't really need open world PvP.

Hell even XI has a better setup for open world PvP than XIV does in terms of lore.

Can you name me 3 games that have sold more than a million copies because they had "Blitzball" or "Chocobo Racing" ?

Games with Chocobo Racing and Blitzball have been pretty popular.

By January 2013, Final Fantasy XIII-2 had shipped 3.1 million copies worldwide. Source.

Final Fantasy VII was both a critical and commercial success, and set several sales records. Within three days of its release in Japan, the game had sold 2.3 million copies. Source.

[Final Fantasy X] has sold 6.6 million copies as of January 2004. Source.

Hope you didn't wait too long.

He wasn't comparing the two. He said time could be better spent on games like blitzball and chocobo racing/raising. And in terms of the Final Fantasy Universe, he's probably correct. I don't think that anyone's trying to argue that PvP isn't important in a lot of mmo's, or that it has millions of fans worldwide. If they were, they'd clearly be incorrect. But for a Final Fantasy mmo, PvP has always been on the backburner compared to PvE, and I think it's fair to say that most fans of the series like it that way. There are tons of games devoted solely to PvP, or have PvP as a big part of their gameplay. A Final Fantasy game just probably won't ever be one of them.

And no, I'm not saying that's necessarily a good or bad decision, just that's how it is. They'd alienate a huge chunk of their current fanbase by making PvP as important as PvE in the game. It's just that simple.

Blitzball was only in one game... It is not "Final Fantasy" same with chocobo racing, it was only in FVII again that does not make it "Final Fantasy" the franchise would be the same with or with out those 2 games... They where not building foundations into the games either, totally Optional. Now triple triad i like, i would like to see an implementation of it, but not above PVP. When i made the comment about regarding Blitzball on the same level as PVP as ignorant, was in the notion, that SE should divert resources for one or the other, and the other being Blitzball. SE is a corporation.. They like making Mola! In fact their entire purpose in life is to make as much gil as possible, if you had the two choices in hand, and given XIV history, which one would be the smarter choice ? Put a set amount of money and resources into developing a "Blitzball" in the hopes that it will be a hit and draw subscribers into your game..... Or! Put the same amount of resources and money into developing a PVP system that will draw a market that already exists and that SE has ignored..... Hmmm! Such a hard logical choice.....

Also people get on with the times, World PVP is dead, it's been dead for years, and nothing will revive it ;)

Smiley: lol Yes those games sold millions and millions of games because of "Chocobo Racing" Indeed! Smiley: lol

Then how come when SE decided to create a game for this "Chocobo Racing" market... They did so horribly ?

I guess your point is becoming muddled then. You're attacking Chocobo Racing and Blitzball because they've never been used in a MMO before, so obviously they'll fail. And then, matter of factly stating that World PVP is nothing important, so that's out.

So, then, new ideas won't work because they haven't been done, and old norms won't work because they're old? What space is left?

I haven't done much research into this (so cut me some slack), but I would think that WoW's Arena PVP system was the first successful iteration of the mechanics when it came out, so how can anyone write off new-to-MMO ideas as failures before implementation?

You're right, it's not a hard logical choice. Blitzball and Chocobo Racing. All day. How many players even played PvP In FFXI? Not many, I can tell you that, as I played and there were OFTEN times where I was the only person to show up for several consecutive ballista matches.

How many people played and enjoyed Chocobo Racing and Blitzball in their respective games? (I'm not talking the Chocobo Racing standalone... which was unsuccessful because it was just a bad game, not specifically because it was about chocobo racing)? Millions and millions. Was it the sole reason people played those games? Heck no, but I've rarely heard someone say they DIDN'T like either of the two minigames, and I've heard tons of people say they didn't like PvP in XI.

So by that pretty obvious logic, I'd say chocobo racing and blitzball make a lot more sense from a monetary perspective. Yes I know, you probably think I'm an idiot for saying that. That's fine. Please keep in mind, I'm not saying either of those games are more successful or more popular than PvP. I'm saying that in the FF universe, they absolutely are.

Final Fantasy X (Blitzball)
"Final Fantasy X received critical acclaim by the media, and enjoyed high sales figures. Square expected the game to sell at least two million copies worldwide owing to the reduced PlayStation 2's fan base, making it smaller than the last three released titles.[112] However, within four days of its release in Japan, the game had sold over 1.4 million copies in pre-orders, which set a record for the fastest-selling console RPG.[113][114]"

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Chocobo Racing)
"By January 2013, Final Fantasy XIII-2 had shipped 3.1 million copies worldwide.[52]"

Ohhh, you want games that sold over a million copies BECAUSE they had these games in it.... Well, Chocobo Racing didn't do that well, 300k+

So, no, I can't but the games they are attached to did well and people did like to play them.

Let me turn the table for a minute, can you tell me an MMO that sold over 1million copies BECAUSE it had PVP in it? I don't think so. You can tell me WoW had stupidly high numbers and it had PvP in it but you can't tell me that's the reason people bought it. I don't think that official poll is out either.

What you could tell me is that people like it. Really? I like PvP, I said I did, what I'm saying is that it's not a FF staple and that the time could be better used on making a more FF related thing, like Chocobo Raising, Chocobo Racing, Tetra Master or Triple Triad (or making the existing content fresh and keep it from bugging out on us). PvP will be fun and I will play it but if its open world PvP I won't be sticking around very long to find out how much fun it sucks out of my game.

PVP in XI was horribly done, it was SE first attempt at PVP, it should not be taken as a blueprint for anything, in fact, they should find whoever designed it and fire him, then sue him for damages to the brand... it was THAT BAD! Hey i enjoyed blitzball, was it a good little addition to the game ? Sure! Was it what made FFX successful ? Not at All! Would a stand alone game around it succeed ? Nope! Because nobody cares about blitzball, if the game was that beloved, trust me SE would have already created some game after it, hell they did it after chocobo racing in VII, and it failed! and then they traid again and yet again it FAILED!

Triple Triad ? Sure! Go for It! It's easy and it is actually a sort of PVP! Now as far as PVP goes, is a large part of the MMO market, to ignore would be stupid, let alone to ignore it in order to divert resources on something that has no chance of being successful...

For arguments sake, lets pretend you are a designer in SE, and yoshi has already stated that there will be PVP in the game, and you go up to him and you tell him "Hey Yoshida! Forget about PVP Bro! I got a better idea... And he for arguments sake says: "Ok Shoot!" and you say, let's ignore the millions of potential subscribers that data in the MMO market shows are there in order to create.... "Blitzball" What do you think his reaction will be ? I am pretty sure you will be sweeping the floors of SE headquarters the next day Smiley: lol

Also what i said about world PVP, was directed at everybody worrying about world PVP, world PVP is dead, it has been dead since 2006, even in WOW where you can openly kill another player in PVP servers, the amount of world pvp that goes around is minimal, Blizzard learned this the hard way, when in BC they designed 2 zones from the ground up with world pvp in mind and they failed, they then moved to the more traditional take now days of an istanced zone for world PVP. If you do not enjoy it, you do not join.... Nobody is forced to participate.

This may be "balanced," but it would also be kind of lame.

The white mage class would have to be horribly overpowered (your example above sounds more like a paladin than a whm) in order to maintain heals fast enough to survive a direct assault from a top-level DD.

White mages are supposed to be squishy; they're not supposed to be able to be self-sufficient. Other party members are supposed to maintain hate in order to protect the whm, so that the whm can keep protecting them... this is just one of the many aspects of party dynamics that makes Final Fantasy what it is. And, this seems like a perfect example of why the development team made the right call in not designing the game with PvP in mind.

EDIT: Also, keep in mind that a skilled whm can get off a heal or two to buy a couple of crucial, extra seconds... but seriously, white mages and black mages should NOT be able to defend themselves against prolonged, direct assaults. A whm's main talent is healing his party members... not tanking or DDing.

Do you honestly think those games did that good, because they had "Chocobo Racing" or "Blitzball" ? Not because you know... They are called "Final Fantasy" ?

War sold over a million copies, and it was strictly a PVP game :) Planetside sold specially well and it was a strictly PVP game. Arenas in Wow are hugely popular, to the point that blizzard stated that they could no longer contemplate removing them. GW2 still lives because of PVP.(Their PVE portion of the game is almost non existent) Swotor had huge PVP success at first, and in an ironic twist of fate, PVP sealed their doom, since it was unbalanced. Rift which sold well and was doing well until recently had a big PVP population. Games centered around Player Versus Player, have been outselling games not centered around it, for the past 5 years, look at COD ? Nobody plays it for the campaign, everybody and their unborn child plays it for the PVP(yes i know is a FPS game but is still PVP) Legue of legends is doing amazingly great, is still a strictly PVP game.

Also this notion that because Final Fantasy XIV is based on a single player series, therefore it should follow the rules of single player games, is a hypocrite one, since the moment anybody suggest the game being more "Solo Friendly" everybody is instantly out with their pitchforks yelling "This is an MMO, if you wanna play solo go play an offline game" but god forbid somebody says "Hey this is a MMO, why cant we fight each other ?" Oh because Final fantasy offline has never had that option, therefore Final Fantasy Online, needs to follow the set of rules, established by it's offline counterpart.... Smiley: lol

So again, by this logic, every game that has a minigame (or something not directly related to the core gameplay) that doesn't have it's own direct spinoff is a failure.

So, Arena in WoW is a failure because there isn't a standalone arena game by Blizzard. The jetski missions in Uncharted are bad because there isn't a standalone jetski game. Heck, fishing in FFXI is a failure because there isn't a standalone fishing game by SE.

The logic doesn't hold up.

But if you look at it from another facet, where things like fishing, jetskis, and arenas supplement the core gameplay and give players something "else" to do, then what's wrong with considering things like chocobo racing or blitzball?

Personally, I wouldn't race Chocobos or play something like (the ridiculously named) Blitzball. But I also wouldn't PVP. If someone else wants to do so, by all means. I'll fish and craft with my "spare" time.

PVP may be an important factor in giving players options to do, but traditional PVP doesn't have to be-all, end-all solution to extra time. Heck, even the mighty WoW keeps adding in things like companion pet PVP. I'd imagine something out-of-the-ordinary like the things mentioned here would do well there too.

Crap, they could add their own pretty successful iOS freemium game, Guardian Cross, and that would also add depth.

I guess my point is that no option should be taken off the table automatically because of perceived failure.

No, a WHM should be able to heal well enough to offset the damage that a damage dealer can do, such that they are mostly evenly matched.

My white mage in FFT would like to have a word with you... Also you are speaking about strictly one class, can i not in theory (I am not sure, since i never played WHM in XIV so correct me if i am wrong" have BLK or offensive spells even as a white mage ? So in theory not only can i heal myself i can also dish out damage ? Am i wrong ?

Also no need to worry, as i understand it, yoshi has stated that once you enter PVP, you will have different abilities for your class/job, than you do for PVE, so a white mage might be only a healing battery in PVE, but in PVE he might be able to hold his own.

This thread reminds me of the bickering on the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer forums to do with PvP. The devs came right out and said that PvP is "not in the spirit" of the franchise. In terms of open world PvP in FFXIV, I'm feeling the same way. It has nothing to do with me not seeing a way that the content could be added to the game. I genuinely dislike the idea of mass-murder going on in an environment that focuses so much on friendship and team spirit prevailing over any despair. I did try Ballista out in FFXI and enjoyed it enough to try out PvP in XIV.

PVP and Arenas are it's own game, you can go from LVL 1 to LVL 95 doing PVP only, you do not have to touch PVE for anything at all, every single MMO after WOW, has followed suit, and has implemented PVP into their game, is to be expected nowdays that an MMO will have some sort of PVP. I din't say they where a failure, i said the times that SE has tried to market Chocobo racing, they have failed, if the mini game was such a hit, and a pivotal part that drove millions of sales in their respective games... How come when SE launched that mini game as it's own stand alone game, it failed ? Because they where fine as part of a bigger game, there was no market to sustain the game by itself...

Also you guys have are way to sensible, i never said "PVP only, forget about Blitzball" i said that PVP should have a higher priority, above blitzball since it has a large enough population in the existing MMO market, that XIV could draw into the, and that SE being a company, and their job is to produce money, would agree and well have agreed since are getting PVP like it or not anyways Smiley: lol

Did those games sell because they were PvP? We are talking MMORPG games, btw...

You are bringing up more than one issue and meshing it into the same argument. Keeping on subject, should PvP be in the FFXIV, MMORPG game? Yes, No, Why?

GW2 is dead. PvP is just something fun that people like to play because it's fun. That means someone was trying to do two things at once and failed. Also an argument as to why they should concentrate more on the FFXIV CORE game play and make PvP a fun side event but nothing so outrageous that it takes away from the other content. Your own case, GW2 proves that my theory as valid.

SWOTOR, I can't speak on it. However, again, how did that game do? Was there a shift in resources to make PvP so awesome? Then it became unbalanced and killed itself. That sounds like ever single PvP game I have ever played, CoD, Socom, Halo, DC Universe, etc. Someone finds an exploit and rides it. It ruins the new player's experience and it's something basic so it can't really be nerfed. *Again, you add to my argument that maybe spending so much resources and time on PvP is a bad idea. Something that was such a "huge PVP success" died. Why have a dead feature in your game? It becomes an eye sore, like Ballista in FFXI but they started making was to ignore that and its basically forgotten by now.

You talk about CoD, that is a PvP game, like you said, who bought it for the single player? But CoD is nothing like FFXIV or any other title that this forum would call a brother game of the same genre.

FFXIV is a MMORPG, story, party, explore, quest, level up fighter jobs, level up farming jobs. Live in an alternate world by becoming a member of its society and economy. Fight the evil that threatens to disrupt and destroy it. Will PvP hurt that aspect of the game, the main aspect of the game? I can't say and I can't say what level of PvP would be tolerated and allow the game to flourish.

All I know and feel is that open world PvP would kill it. Dedicating resources to a set of PvP servers will 100% tae people, time, money, ideas away from the main purpose of the game. I don't think you can argue that. Lots of People got fired from SE, I doubt they will hire a PvP team.

I'm not saying to forego PvP for blitzball or chocobo racing. I'm saying that, for a Final Fantasy MMO, I think that far more people would be interested in chocobo racing and blitzball than would be in PvP. I don't think the crowd that FF is targeted for is the entirety of the MMO customer base. It's basically people who love the FF franchise, have played FFXI, played XIV 1.0, and PS3 players. Those are their biggest target markets.

Sure they will get some interest from the rest of the MMO community, but I think we both know that's not the group they are banking on to sell subs. If it was, they wouldn't have focused on incorporating so much FF fanservice into the game. They would have probably focused a lot more on PvP and innovative new mechanics to try and dazzle players out of their current games. Heck, they aren't even planning to have PvP testing until phase 4 are they? Wouldn't you think that if they thought it was so important, they would have started testing it a lot sooner? It's not like that's going to be something that will be super easy to balance right off the bat, especially if it has all new abilities like they've claimed.
